Arcane Brilliance: Post-patch madness

Each week Arcane Brilliance shows you what happens when Mages stop being polite and start being real. This week, Arcane Barrage gets all up in Living Bomb's face, and fireworks ensue when Hot Streak hooks up with Combustion. Can Netherwind Presence and Missile Barrage learn to live together? Will Arcane Blast come to terms with the fact that it got raped? Will Deep Freeze finally reveal that it has Aids? Find out in this week's Arcane Brilliance.
Anyone else's head spinning like that chick in The Exorcist? I'm not saying I need a priest to come and cast patch 3.0.2 out of my body or anything, I'm just saying that holy crap. That was a lot of stuff, all at once. Even though I've been playing the beta, and constantly scanning this site and various others for information to prepare myself for all that was changing when the patch finally went live, it was still overwhelming to log in when my server finally came back up late Tuesday night and see how crazy everything had gotten. To be quite honest, I'm still adjusting.
In a ton of ways, what we're logging into today is an entirely different game than the one we logged into five days ago, even though our levels are still the same, we're still doing the same quests, and playing the same end-game content. Our mounts are still there, but in a different place. The bosses we're fighting still look the same, but are now way easier to kill. Many of our talents have the same names, but now do completely different things. Spells that were previously good are now bad, and some that were useless on Monday are perfectly serviceable today.
With the information overload we've all been presented with, I have found it best to focus on one or two things at a time, instead of attempting any sort of larger view. I look at each change as I notice it, rather than trying to address them all at once, purely out of fear of my head exploding. If you missed them in all the chaos, Arcane Brilliance did a two-part preview of the major changes, and you can find those here and here. After the jump, I'll go over some of the sparkly newness I've noticed but haven't covered yet in this space, both documented changes that managed to surprise me as well as those that flew a bit more under-the-radar.
Hot Streak is awesome
This talent went through so many changes on the beta that by the time it became really good, I wasn't Fire-specced and didn't get to properly test it. It took me by surprise when I took it into an instance with my second attempt at a PvE Fire build (my first attempt took Living Bomb, which I will address farther down, and went into Frost for Elemental Precision, which I will also talk about later) and I realized that I was critting all the freaking time, I was never in any real danger of running out of mana, and my DPS was rock-solid. With a good tank (and all of the wonderful ways in which they can generate threat these days), the extra crits weren't pulling aggro, and life was pretty much as it should be.
This is a very effective talent. I'm still learning to watch for when it procs, but with a combat log mod of your choice set to alert you when it does proc, you should be alright. The Fire tree in general seems very well balanced. It flat-out dishes up damage in large, meaty chunks. One part of the tree that I haven't been impressed with, though...
Living Bomb is not
...is this. It isn't terrible, I suppose. It is a fairly powerful AoE DoT, and is likely quite nice in Battlegrounds. The thing is, I simply haven't found a worthwhile use for it in PvE yet. It will probably be fun to have while leveling in Wrath, but for the next month, I'm just not seeing a viable purpose. The global cooldown and mana used casting this in a boss fight is really wasted at the moment. Why? Quite simply, it doesn't do enough damage yet. At higher ranks in the beta, this isn't quite as much of an issue, but I'd still like to see the damage of this spell raised across the board. If it isn't, the spell will go into the same category as Deep Freeze: a 51 point talent that isn't worth 51 talent points. The extra point is better spent right now on Focus Magic (more on this later).
Arcane Explosion is bigger?
It's entirely possible that I'm crazy. I'm not ruling it out. But I've seen a few scattered reports of similar experiences in various other places, so I'm just going to throw this out there.
Is Arcane Explosion bigger now? I never noticed this on the beta, but on the live servers it seems to be hitting things it never hit before. The radius seems to be significantly wider these days. I'm not complaining, mind you. If there's one thing I think we can all agree on, it's that explosions should be big. If I'm being stupid on this one, feel free to let me know.
Don't bother with Arcane Blast
Seriously, it sucks. The PvE Arcane build I'm tooling around with at the moment is this one, and I only use Arcane Blast when Presence of Mind comes off cooldown, to use it on something with a cast-time. In fact, I've tied it to a macro with PoM, and the spell by itself doesn't even warrant a spot on my action bar. The most effective spell rotation I've settled on is Arcane Barrage-->Arcane Missiles-->Arcane Barrage-->Arcane Missiles, with AB thrown in only when PoM is up, as I already said. It's sad, really. The class designers over at Blizzard didn't want us to spam AB anymore, and well, they got their wish. Their stated intent was to make it awesome to cast once, less awesome to cast a second time. Now I find it's best to not even cast it once. Thanks guys, really. I know the class tweaks are nowhere near finished, so I hold out hope for better days ahead for this spell. Sort of. Bleah.
Focus Magic is nice
Put it on somebody who casts quickly and crits often. My personal favorite is a Holy Paladin, but it also works well on an Elemental Shaman, Boomkin, or another Mage. Pick the best choice in your group and buff them, then watch them buff you. It's actually a kind of neat, unusual, synergistic mechanic. If you're solo, just throw it on any passing caster, and watch the buff pop up whenever your new friend crits. As far as I can tell, there's no range restriction on the buff. The extra crit is a substantial, sizable buff, and having it up on two casters is a large benefit to the group.
Threat? What threat?
I'm not even kidding. For the love of all that's good and pure, fire away guys. We've always dreamed of that bright day when we could just go into a fight, guns blazing, and not have to hold back out of fear that the large monster we were pew pewing at might happen to turn its head our direction. Even while DPSing with a deep fire build, seeing some ridiculous Hot Streak/Combustion crit chains, I haven't been in much danger of pulling aggro. Tanks can generate and hold threat so well at the moment that DPS can really let loose without fear for the first time in this game's history. You'll still want to watch your threat, just in case your tank isn't quite ready for the spotlight, or you get some truly ridiculous crit chains going or something, but you won't have to watch it nearly as much as you're used to.
Get Surefooted and eat some Spicy Hot Talbuk
I'm not even kidding. These two things have suddenly become incredibly useful to Mages. Need hit rating? Can't figure out how to fit Elemental Precision into your new build? Welcome to the alternative.
Before, finding a boot enchant as a caster was always kind of a waste of time. You could take your pick of a little bit of spirit, a smidge of mana per 5, or some stamina and a bit of foot-speed. Now we have a more valid choice. 10 hit rating is quite good, it comes with 10 crit rating as a bonus, and Surefooted is a relatively cheap enchant. Go get it. And if you still could use more hit rating, stock up on Spicy-Hot Talbuk. Go kill a herd or two in Nagrand and cook up some hit rating.
Glyphs are cool
It's likely that there are already a few capped out Inscriptors (Inscribers? Scribes? Inscriptographers? Glyph-bots?) on your server. Seek them out. Get some glyphs going. They're pretty cool.
Here are the ones we Mages currently have access to, as far as I can tell:
Glyph of Improved Scorch
Glyph of Frost Nova
Glyph of Ice Armor
Glyph of Icy Veins
Glyph of Ice Block
Glyph of Arcane Explosion
Glyph of Arcane Missiles
Glyph of Blink
Glyph of Evocation
Glyph of Mana Gem
Glyph of Mage Armor
There's a little something for everybody there, and you should be able to fill your three major glyph slots with useful things no matter your spec. Pick some up. There's literally no reason not to. Unlike Enchants, you'll never outgrow a glyph. Your Ice Block will always be your Ice Block, and you'll never replace your Mage Armor. There's absolutely no reason to wait on these. The mats are relatively cheap, and though the rarity of high-level Scribes currently might mean getting gouged a bit on prices, making your spells better is still worth it. My favorites right now are the glyphs for Mage Armor, Improved Scorch, and Mana Gem.
Change, it is a-coming.
I don't know if you've seen the latest beta build yet, but most of our most-used spells have been lowered in mana cost. Everything from Arcane Missiles to Fireball to Frostbolt and most spells in between have had their percentage of base mana cost reduced by an average of 2%. Living Bomb got a whopping 6% reduction, making it slightly more attractive, while Arcane Blast yet again got screwed, receiving a paltry 1% drop. Taken as a whole, this change is fantastic. Our mana situation at level 70 is excellent on live right now, but at 80 on the beta, it was unsightly. This is an excellent change, and should help us down the road quite a bit, especially if this change represents a trend.
Enjoy this month, guys. It'll continue to be a bit crazy, but I must admit it's been incredibly fun so far. My plan this week is to try out some PvP specs (now that I can actually get into a Battleground on my server) and see how we're stacking up in these last few weeks of level 70. I'll let you know how that goes.

I can't believe you didn't mention firestarter, it's only like the most awesome f@cking thing ever!!!
havitech Oct 18th 2008 3:09PM
I was worried about mages when I first starting hearing news about the 51-point talents. Living Bomb and Hot Streak both started out as very mediocre. Now, they are awesome. Sure, Living Bomb is a little more situational, but it's so much fun to spam in battlegrounds! And instant-cast pyroblasts is incredible :)
alway Oct 18th 2008 10:08PM
Hot streak is amazing... Especially when you count the new effect of imp. scorch, which now increases your crit chance on a target by up to 10%. My crit chance on my mage is 31.41% with my normal mage buffs, add the imp. scorch glyph, and I can get instant pyro about 1 in 7 casts if I've calculated that correctly... Spamming scorch, that would be about 1 instant pyro every 12 seconds... Talk about a dps increase. This is my favorite talent on the whole tree now :)
Also, firestarter is really nice for aoe, as it lets you really come up with some more aoe combos... As you run into a clump of players, cast living bomb, on entry, cast dragon's breath, then cast aoe flamestrike, then blast wave, and by then you are most likely dead anyway... *squish*
AOE range is very noticably larger. Its not just arcane explosion though, its everything. Even the cone on dragon's breath extends out farther.

i dislike arcane blast a spell on its own, it has the worst animation and sound of all mage spells, but i must admit it still boosts your dps by putting it in, if you have the mana for it...
Blast-barrage-blast-blast-barrage and AM when it procs
fire is better though, especially with the insane crit ratings now (imp scorch wut?)
so basically maybe they should just boost AM a bit more for me.. i really dont want Blast to be my primary nuke in arcane

My guild did Hyjal last night, our first raid since the patch hit, and I officially LOVE Hot Streak. I tried to treat Living Bomb like Seed of Corruption, which didn't work out too well, but overall I was very pleased with my new toys. Now if I can just get all my mods working again, I'll be in heaven.
Oiseaux Oct 18th 2008 4:00PM
Your arcane rotation is completely off. You'll go oom so fast by spamming AM. Someone has been replying to your arcane QQs for the past few weeks now about how you should be using Blast->Barrage->Blast and then Missiles whenever MB procs (I can't remember their name, sorry). It's perfectly good dps, fun, and a change of pace from fire/frost mages. Please stop saying every week that AB is crappy because it really isn't.
Mcgriddle Oct 19th 2008 2:14AM
This is the rotation that i've been using, and it's worked really well. I honestly don't see what the problem is, spamming one spell isn't fun.
Kcronos Oct 18th 2008 5:11PM
I agree - I went with a 61 point arcane build...i have no mana issues at all (which i'm totally surprised by). My rotation is: slow, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane barrage, arcane missiles, arcane barrage, repeat. I'll toss in a POM/AP in this mix as well. In the raids I've been in I'm always in the top 5 for DPS and often #1. I'm blowing all other mages out of the water as far as DPS and overall damage goes. My threat is also very low.
I'm loving acrane and so far haven't found a frost or fire mage that can compete with my arcane build for PvE.
Jim Oct 18th 2008 9:19PM
Going OOM by spamming AM? Are you joking?
With the Glyph of Mage Armor and full raid buffs, I was running nearly 600 MP5 while casting and was gaining mana while I was casting AM.
My rotation was to spam AB until at about 20% mana, then rotate between AM and Barrage while watching my mana bar refill, then repeat. My DPS was just as good as it was pre-patch; I just had to fondle more keys. And I never, ever had to worry about going OOM.
Dienekes Oct 18th 2008 10:56PM
I totally agree. I've been hitting Blast till it procs MB, AM for a half second to follow with a Barrage on my mage and nearly doubled the DPS of my FB-spamming 40/0/21 build pre-patch.
Faar Oct 18th 2008 5:14PM
I hate to be a whiner and all, but having been the victim now of a number of barrage-spamming mages, I have to say mage burst is a little out of control. It's always been strong of course, but surely there should be a limit.
Fireballs crit for 5.5k+, barrages crit for 5.5k+, fricken fire blast is also up in those territories where I know I've been crit for 3.5k by a friggin instant cast spell, arcane bolts critting for 2.3k each etc... And you get streak-critted, I dunno what's up with mage crit now with talent abilities and such, but when you get 4-5 crits in a row and completely wiped out in 3 seconds (WTB 1 million haste rating).......WTH?
Just a bit over the top, ya know?
Meanwhile I'm just a dumb stupid tree trying to heal through the massive damage coming in, and assuming I'm not improved counterspelled I find I just can't. Hots can't deal with 3000+dps burst damage (that lasts for 3-4 seconds). I try to heal friendly players against mages casting fireballs and barrages - can't. After I blow NS and SM+HT, there's nothing I can do anymore. DPS > healing, even with just 1-on-1.
Broken... :'(
Ok, go ahead and downvote me now, I know you're itching to do it. I don't mind, really! And yea, just for those who would mention it in their replies, pally burst is wtfborked too, and having fought in the beta I can safely say so is dethknigget as well. PvP in WoW 3.x is officially back in WoW 1.x territory where you've gone from full health to dead in a couple seconds.
Cy Oct 18th 2008 6:04PM
One thing to keep in mind is that things aren't finished yet, and none of these talents and spells are balanced for level 70. So while you may be getting killed in three seconds now, I'd hope that it's more balanced at 80.
jenks Oct 18th 2008 10:16PM
I voted you up, not down, because while i disagree with your point of view at least you have one.
The thing is, I was not around for the 1.x madness. I am only a relatively recent player and i have seen through my leveling my class drop away from feared/respected to being a joke.
I don't want to win every fight, that would be boring. I do however want to stand an even chance to fight. As a mage i sacrifice survivability for this burst damage. In my case 7300 in my case, I pity the healer trying to keep me up against a combat rouge. I am locked in a straight DPS race, can i DPS you to oblivion before you tear me a new one? Warriors, rouges, hunters, sharmen, druids, priests, warlocks and paladins, all can take me out. Now however i stand an even chance, if they start something, of at worst giving them a fight that may cause them to think twice in future.
Are we "balanced" as a class, in my (un-balanced) opinion probably closer than anyone one either side of the argument is willing/able to admit. If not right and i am about to be nerfed into oblivion, please let me enjoy making people think twice before they gank me.
Max Oct 19th 2008 1:16AM
You have obviously never set foot in an arena. Good luck casting fireball or AB against a real player.
As to people complaining about deep freeze -
frost is the pvp spec. it always has been, and always will be. get over it. I for one am happy that I actually have something now that can make a resto druid sit the fuck still.
Komay Oct 18th 2008 6:06PM
I'm a little bit surprised by many people liking living bomb, i think it sucks even in pvp, it takes 12 sconds to activate the bomb and only affects one target at the time, in many cases the target dies before it reaches 8 seconds!!
rock Oct 18th 2008 6:09PM
Why is the Surefooted enchant and Scroll of Enchant Boots - Surefooted so different in their effects? Loses snare resist and gains critical strike?
None of the other enchants listed in this post differ between the enchant and the scroll, or is this just not a wide enough selection to compare against?
Sarius Oct 18th 2008 6:19PM
Here is my take on 3.0.2 from a PvE/Raid Frost Mage perspective...
Pros:
1- Improved DPM (and more coming in 3.0.3)
2- Improved DPS (I think my DPS went up by 100 or so just in the new build)
3- More PvE/Raid viable, Winter's Graps and Improve Water Elemental make me much more valuable to a raid than before
4- Wraith Glyphs (ones not yet available but are wowhead) for Water Elemental and Frostbolt (improve upon points 1, 2 & 3)
5- Further reduction of cooldowns in talents (improves points 1, 2, 3 & 4)
6- Yeah... 100% Hit Rating (seriously no one really talks about this on blogs and forums but this instantly gives everyone the ability to do more damage)
Cons:
1- Still, despite Brain Freeze and Fingers of Frost, the best DPS is still to use Frostbolt spam. Don't touch Ice Lance and for the love of gawd only use Fireball when you're mana is an issue. The math, GCD and untalented Fireball make Frostbolt the only viable high output DPS option. Period.
2- Deep Freeze, as you have suggested repeatedly, is the most disappointing 51-talent ever. Worst than Living Bomb (again, at least thats "cool" in PvE).
3- Goodbye Ghost Hit (but again, hello 100% Hit Rating)
Sarius Oct 18th 2008 6:26PM
And, what would I advocate as fixes to making me a happy frosty (feel free to steal the ideas and blog them to get them noticed)...
1- Make Deep Freeze useful against a raid boss. Either bring back the damage (which wasn't really that much to begin with but was sure better than nothing) or make it apply a Fingers of Frost like debuff to increase my next cast's crit change... Or really anything to make this usable on a raid boss.
2- Make Ice Lance deal, on a Frozen/Fingers of Frost target, something more comparable to my Frostbolt. If there is a worry about that becoming overpowered (which I agree that would most likely be) have the damage degrade significantly on each subsequent cast so I would only want to use it only once or twice.
#1 would make being deep frost less anti-climantic and #2 would give me a reason to have some sort of spell rotation.
turtlehead Oct 18th 2008 10:36PM
"2- Improved DPS (I think my DPS went up by 100 or so just in the new build)
[...]
4- Wraith Glyphs (ones not yet available but are wowhead) for Water Elemental and Frostbolt (improve upon points 1, 2 & 3)"
#2 is entirely true, but compared to other mages its meh. The frostbolt glyph situation truly sucks too. This makes me a sad (pig-headed PvE raid frost) squishie.
The elemental glyph is all sorts of awesome though, got to admit that.
Never minded using frostbolt all the time; I find it quite relaxing compared to some of my other characters with complicated rotations. Manage timing the elemental instead of the rotation. Deep freeze getting some damage would be a nice treat to toss around though.
Stormcross Oct 18th 2008 8:27PM
I spec'd deep arcane 54/7/0. I did it fast, so I need to redo it because of a missclick or to.
- Focus Mind rocks
- Arcane Barrage is my new favorite nuke
- Missile Barrage is great to watch go off.
- I've been using A Barrage / A Blast / A Barrage / A Blast ... and Arcane Missiles when Missile Barrage procs.
- DPS has gone up ~200 dps
- Without Pyroblast anymore, I feel uncertain what to use PoM for. Arcane Blast cast takes about the time it takes for Arcane Barrage to cooldown.
- Are there any mods out yet that will announce when Missile Barrage procs? I find I keep taking my eyes off the fight to check if MB procs.
- I find Incanter's Absoption intriguing and may shift more points into it.
