BigRedKitty: Freezing Arrow and a new Wolf
Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the Hunter class, sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
Even better, we'll show you how it works as we hunt down, tame, and introduce you to the latest beta Wolf-skin!
You are invited to download the YouTube version (36MB) of this movie here, and the full-sized version (53MB) here.
As always, a great big Thank You to the WoW Insider editors for allowing us to publish this movie both here and on our little blog at the same time!

Hooray for BRK :-)
Don't suppose you have any insight into that line in the upcoming patch notes about coefficients on gorillas thunderstomp? I don't understand what it means, but i'm afraid they're going to nerf my furry paladin friend.
Hombre Oct 21st 2008 3:53PM
No worries about your gorilla; the damage, or part of the damage, has been changed from physical to magical. That means damage done is still the same, it's just a different type.
If anything, it's doing more damage now since physical damage is lowered by armor and magical damage is not.
AoE grinding is here to stay!

Seems odd that you can tame that wolf considering it's a controlled beast already...useless that restriction has been removed.

1500 and 1600 crits. Seems kind of OP to me

lol flashdance...
Lukabow Oct 21st 2008 3:53PM
I tried and It said it could not be tamed, guess they didn't do it in the patch, must be only in WotLK...
cnx Oct 21st 2008 3:55PM
is that considered an exotic pet? not a fan of BM tbh...
Tailchaser Oct 21st 2008 4:05PM
I can understand not wanting to be BM. I was Surv from Grulls/Mags till end of TK. But once I went BM I will never go back, for PVE you can't beat the damage of a BM hunter and it doesn't look like that is going to change in WOTLK.

I just beat my own BM DPS as Marks.
cnx Oct 22nd 2008 2:51PM
hello again, i agree BM is a great spec. It was my spec for 1-70.. but just like yourself, I tried another spec which turned out to be marks and i, too, would never go back. i've experimented with the new BM skills post 3.0.2 patch and they're all right, but I have grown an even larger attachment to the deep marksman tree, relying on the skills such as silencing shot, and the new chimaera shot I am really loving!
as for my other question, does anyone know if this wolf will be considered an exotic pet? i tried searching petopia (yesterday... have not checked today as of this post), but i did not see an entry for this armored wolf which appears to be the same model as the racial epic ground mount for the orcs.
thanks!!

The thing is, it is not individual pets that become exotic, it is pet families. This one belongs to the Wolf family I assume, which is NOT exotic, so I would think it is not either
David Wolf Nov 12th 2008 9:15PM
Correct the Hellfire ramparts wolf is not a Exotic pet.

Is it me or does the trap shot seem completely useless?
Raaj Oct 21st 2008 4:24PM
Not useless per se, but all traps should have been this way to begin with. They're just re-giving us Freezing Trap at the moment.
Blackhorn Oct 21st 2008 5:22PM
It shouldn't seem useless to someone who does a lot of trapping.
Try trapping a ranged attacker or a caster with the traditional freezing trap... then try it when you can plant the trap right at the mob's feet and you'll see why this is good.

"Try trapping a ranged attacker or a caster with the traditional freezing trap... then try it when you can plant the trap right at the mob's feet and you'll see why this is good."
potentially useful (at least when there is no way to LOS them and/or you don't have silencing shot for the caster), but really, try chain trapping anybody with freezing arrow. believe me, the regular freezing trap works at least as well for directing your trap mobs. and in PvP, freezing arrow is currently way less reliable than scatter-trapping, which is a crying shame. In all honesty, the only time I expect to use freezing arrow is to help take the heat off of a healer who has pulled aggro. This skill is by far one of the worst things they have done to hunters in wrath. I do admit, though, when they first put it in, I was amused to actually try shooting it at a body of water and saw the trap just float on top of the ocean.
Tarbh Oct 21st 2008 6:30PM
I think plant trapping is actually more useful just based on cooldowns, seeing as the further away you have the target the longer you have your cooldown ticking away, shortening the distance between the break and the next trap. Allowing for more effective pre-laying, and the bonus is compounded with concussive shot on that target just to get the most out of it.
Anyway, we all know that we have too many binds as it is, that is one shot that will probably not occupy my bars because it seems far too situational, at least for pve.
Freezing shot, good for:
A caster who isn't first target on dps, with no LoS or space to run back.

if you already have a Paladin in your raid giving out Blessing of Might... will Furious Howl stack with that?
or will it be ignored much like Battle Shout?
Blackhorn Oct 21st 2008 5:24PM
I don't think Furious Howl is even on the same level as might or shout. Didn't I hear him say something about it doing 100-something attack power?
I'm gonna guess it stacks, like any super quick little buff you get.
