Also, AD healers shoot a bolt at you when you are a zombie. I got hit twice, and it said "three strikes and you are out".

It appears that your health keep decreasing while you are in zombie form. You don't get to be a zombie for ever.

Guards were hostile to me, but quest givers were not.

I was infected in Goldshire, turned into a zombie in Northshire (there was another player following when I was infected. I assume he wanted to kill me when I turned into a zombie, so I ran there). I see no reason I couldn't take the disease anywhere.
