The price of a game time refund
Is it just me or has it been a long time since Blizzard passed out some free game time? Reader Jim T. emailed me about a conversation he recently had with Blizzard's customer service -- he was disappointed with the lag, the queues, and the downtime on his server lately, and checking in about how he might get a refund or credit. The customer rep told him that while they didn't give out individual credit, they occasionally do give out game-wide credit for downtime mistakes.Which is true -- Blizzard will occasionally give out a free day to folks affected by major unexpected downtime or server issues. But while they used to do it fairly often, by my recollection, they seem much less inclined to pull the trigger on a refund lately. On the one hand, sure, Blizzard does a better job than they used to -- last Tuesday's maintenance lasted quite a while, but it wasn't anything compared to the days the servers used to be offline a few years ago. On the other hand, though, there's no question players are being affected -- by queues, by problems logging in, and by lag on the instance servers and elsewhere.
Of course, we have no idea if Blizzard has an actual rule for when they give out free gametime and when they don't -- at this point, the criteria for giving players a refund happens to be "when they feel like it." Which is all right, we guess -- it's their company, of course. But it does seem like the criteria has changed -- we used to get refunds all the time, and even with all the problems lately, Blizzard hasn't decided to give customers any game time back.

It costs .50 cents/day to play the game, I sure wish people would quit whining. Take the time to go outside. I only play an average of 2 hours a day and longer on the weekends to raid, but it costs me roughly .25 cents and hour, whereas some people play 10-12, maybe even more hours a day at a cost beginning at .05 cents/hour. Quit bitching FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just upset that their servers aren't capable of handling the load. It's the classic ISP situation: overselling a service without upgrading any infrastructure.
Runstadrey Oct 24th 2008 2:22PM
I don't know if the lag problems in general are cause by overselling the service, BGs, arenas & instances - maybe. But, the realms themselves are suffering from spikes of huge populations on some servers and very sparse on others. I'd like to see them do something about evening out the populations across the servers. Offer not just free transfers but free months or something to try to get people to move to different realms.

noone cares about the money, its the time spent thats wasted, not so much the server down part but the endless lagg and frustration of instance and bg servers being randomly down
and to the going outside part, were not 5 year old kids here, some people actually plan in playing the game in their day/work schedule
on the other hand free days arent that great, i was away from the game for over 3 months and when i came back suggested to a friend to use scroll of ressurection on me. turns out i couldnt accept and give him some free game time because of 1 free day i got in the middle of that 3 month period

See, I'd think they'd have even more cause to give out free days for the reasons you specify. It's a very small cost to them for a big gain in player satisfaction.

I have to be honest the free day or free time is not really a big deal and easily forgotten. What they should do is to come up with some customer support reward items. A trinket or relic, something people will see in the bag or bank to remind them of how Blizzard appreciates the patronage and wants to make amends for the problematic gameplay. Simple suggestion with significant logistic involved - but who cares about a free day or even month really - you can't even go out to a decent dinner with a free month refund - maybe McDonalds. But I would remember a cool vanity pet, trinket or cool consumable that turns me into a Troll or something.

How about Blizz gives some free game time to everyone except people like Mat. Then we'll see who's doing the bitching.
gundamxzero Oct 24th 2008 4:03PM
I guess I will be the only one to agree with you matt. The rest of these people cant even imagine doing something else, sad really. Make as many excuses as you would like but when it comes down to it wow's customer base seems to typically be the most whiny, and most addicted.

They've already confirmed that they will be compensating players somehow for the recent issues: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=6425673684&sid=1
Jane Gray Oct 25th 2008 8:20AM
Thats europe. They give europe time a lot more than the US for some reason.
Mat Oct 24th 2008 2:09PM
whoops, typo.... *an hour.
Zanrok Oct 24th 2008 2:14PM
This is very true, they used to give out 1-3 day free time because of server lag. However, this was when the game had a lot less players. Maybe they think because they have so many customers they do not need to bend over backwards for them as much. So many raids lost these past weeks because of instances being down.... I will give them credit though, lately the servers have been running better.

What problems? With all due respect, I think you have forgotten just how different it used to be. What now we might consider a minor annoyance, would have been the best you could hope for back in the day.
I remember when the realm would go down all the time in the middle of MC and then we would be waiting for three or more hours in queue before we got back in and that was normal.
Remember Christmas of 05? Queues every night for a month.
And I can only find a few documented instances where Blizzard issued refunds out, and those were for times when the servers were down for two days straight.
I am not trying to be disrespectful, but I think what you are doing in enticing the population of players that like to whine to do so.

One of Mike's favorite hobbies is inflaming the legions of whiners to see how much QQ they can produce. I think he just spends way, way too much time on the WoW forums.

It's not a matter of my 50 cents, it's a matter of them accepting that they're not providing a minimum level of service to be considered acceptable for their own standards. When they don't offer a refund for a day when an entire server was unable to log into the game, as is what happened to my server the Tuesday before last, they are saying they find that to be an acceptable level of service provided.
All in all, the recent events with extended downtime for the 3.0.2 patch and almost complete unplayability during prime time hours for my own and several other servers is displaying a marked lack of standards on Blizzard's part. Blizzard's name in the community is one of high standards, a company who will repeatedly blow off release dates in favor of releasing as close to perfect of a product as they are able. This recent spate of issues may be indicative of what we can expect from the new Activision/Blizzard, as well as a reduced show of accepting any kind penalty to themselves when they do transgress their usual standards.
toddcore Oct 24th 2008 2:43PM
With all of the major things going on right now (holiday events, 3.0.2, Wrath in ~3 weeks) I'd say the level of service they've provided is more than acceptable. In a perfect world they'd be able to do all of these things with no impact on the players, but there's a big difference between acceptable and perfect.
If you really can't tolerate occasional downtime and quirks even around the time of a major content patch and expansion being released then you simply should not be playing MMOs. Go buy a single player RPG, preferably one that's been out for a year or two so they've had time to work all the bugs out.
Ahoni Oct 24th 2008 3:28PM
"This recent spate of issues may be indicative of what we can expect from the new Activision/Blizzard"
No, but it may be indicative of the excuse people will use whenever they feel like complaining about the state of affairs. According to official sources, Activision has had ZERO IMPACT on Blizzard operations.
By any reasonable measure, Blizzard runs incredibly stable servers. They just patched hundreds upon hundreds of servers and millions of clients with a 1GB+ patch. Most realms experienced some minor instability in the week following the patch, but most realms have been fairly stable. A few realms have had extended problems and are being worked on.
Activision would have to be complete morons to interfere with Blizzard. They know Blizzard is a cash cow. They know World of Warcraft is the latest goose laying golden eggs for Blizzard. Why exactly would they interfere?
gundamxzero Oct 24th 2008 4:05PM
Out of the 365 days you play this game 3-4 days they are having a hard time transitioning to the new expansion and all the sudden you dont get a minimum of service.
Right.
niko Oct 24th 2008 2:16PM
To me, leveling my alt from 60 to 70 just got insanely faster thanks to the patch.
In my eyes, they are saving me all kinds of time that I would have had to spend grinding out more quests. This is time in my pocket!
Thus, the a time extension is not really necessary for my account. They just saved me a day or two of playtime thanks to the XP reduction!
Thanks, Blizz!

quick what's .50 cents times 11 million!
