Scourge invasion in Stormwind and Undercity
While it's not something new exactly, it seems a lot of people haven't quite seen it happen yet. Along with the Scourge Invasion in places like the Burning Steppes, Azshara, and other points around the world, the invasion has hit some of the capital cities. Every now and then a strike team of Scourge, a Pallid Horror and Flameshockers, will spawn in a capital city and start attacking nearby guards and NPCs. When defeated, they'll leave behind a broken Necrotic Crystal which will have a quest for you. This is something exclusive to the invasion, but it's not something that just started happening today, and not the next step/phase of the event. A lot of people are under the impression that it is simply because it happens so infrequently. It really is rather cool when it happens, though. The first time I saw it was back in 2006 when this event happened the first time. Since I roleplay when I'm not raiding, I was sitting in the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind just yapping away with some people. The Scourge actually spawn in the 'basement' of the Cathedral, so my first experience with them was seeing them rise up out of the catacombs. Freaky? I think so!

Ah, so this is what Sylvanas /yelled about the other day on my server, and what scourge the UC bankers were referring to when they told me to "stop them before they got any further." I didn't see any scourge from where I was at, so I was a bit befuddled, but I guess that clears it up.

I thought I heard Cairne yelling the other day as well, figured it was happening in all the cities. Also, I haven't seen mention on wowinsider of the mysterious letters received after turning in the drops from the scourge event.
Suzaku Oct 28th 2008 10:15PM
Like most other things with the Scourge Invasion, those aren't so mysterious. They were part of the pre-Naxx invasion with WoW patch 1.11. Turning them in to the Keeper of the Rolls will get you a scroll in the mail a day or two later, giving you some lore on characters and where to find them, and they become vendors that give you can access to some unique "friendship" food.
Jay Oct 29th 2008 1:36PM
The friendship food is okay -- it requires level 45 and provides the appropriate level of health -- but I love the fact that I got the "Tastes Like Chicken" achievement as a result.
The bubble-hearthing paladin trinket is awesome. I got a good laugh out of my group when I unleashed him on the Headless Horseman last night.

Kool. I hope I see it.
On a side note:
Last night around 715pm server time on Barthilas, the dailies on the Isle of Quel'Danas, the gold rewards on the description of each quest was nerfed down to about 50% of the original amounts. Handing in however gave teh regular amount of gold, but when the quest log was checked it had the nerfed gold return listed.
Odd eh? Must be preperation for Wotlk or something.

Argh, if that's true I'm going to be so pissed off!! I have been putting off buying epic ground mounts and saving money until I level my alts to 70 and be able to do dailies, and this is really going to screw my plans off... why would they cut off money from dailies anyway?
Ngnsewa Oct 28th 2008 9:25PM
There is no Nerf.
With Wrath the 'XP to Gold' bonus will stop.
So in theory, lvl 70 dailies will start to give less gold and instead reward XP.

I'm thinking something big will happen after a server has repelled 'X' number of attacks.
I don't think they would be keeping count at Light's Hope Chapel otherwise?
What kind of counts are showing up on other servers?
Mine was under 100 at last logon
Zummers Oct 28th 2008 10:04PM
When Naxx was released, the count determined how much stam you could get from the Argent Dawn NPC's.
Suzaku Oct 28th 2008 10:15PM
That was part of the original event. The more battles won, the better stamina buff items were handed out. I've also heard that the attacks ceased after 150 battles, but I can't remember myself.

I got 6 bonus runes from Flameshockers just by patrolling Stormwind last night, waiting for Burning Steppes and Blasted Lands to be invaded again. And now, along with the tabbard and a new pair of leather gloves, I am the proud owner of a bubble-hearthing pet paladin.

I managed to put a group of 3 of us together really late the first night of the necropoli attacks, a warrior, a shammy and myself, holy priest...we pretty well owned the situation at most attacks and ended up with around 200 necrotic shards a piece. I've managed to buy all the items and still have over 130 shards (I keep building up more from beating down the Flameshocker skeles too)....I guess mana pots will have to do. :)

I noticed the innkeeper saying "scourge in the city!" or something like that. They were lvl 61 elites, neutral. an hour later, a guard yelled out that there were "Scourge in the sewers!" I didn't have time to investigate, but I don't imagine they made it very far.
Sallix Oct 28th 2008 8:20PM
I swear something like this happened during the naxx patch pre-tbc.
mizatt Oct 28th 2008 9:21PM
It did :) I remember because that's when I started playing. The necropoli were there and there were flameshockers and other various monsters in Stormwind.
Suzaku Oct 28th 2008 10:14PM
It did. The attacks in various zones, new bosses in instances, the necropolises over the cities, the low level undead outside them, and the higher level elites running into the city were all part of the first Scourge Invasion of patch 1.11, which tied into the release of the Naxxramas raid.
The Scourge Invasion event has been brought back to introduce Wrath, retuned for level 70 players, with a new boss in Kara. They also introduced a "zombie infestation" component based on the accidental Corrupted Blood plague incident that occured with the release of Zul'Gurub.
Aaron Oct 28th 2008 9:30PM
It was 2 days ago I killed one of those scourge named in UC and it spawned a crystal people can click on to get a quest. I'm not sure this is part of Blizz's next stage of the invasion as it happened during the zombie rampage.

Whats the timer on the Pallid Horror, does anybody know? He's the only Invasion thing I've yet to grab... =/
