The main downside I see is that good class-specific discussions are going to get lost in the cesspool of spam and multi-class QQ. The original forums weren't much better, but smaller populations allowed for easier access to useful information. It's also going to be a hell of a lot scarier for a newbie to jump into a forum that size than it would be to jump into their specific class forum. Alternatives like EJ are going to see a distinct rise in postcount methinks (which sucks for the newbies who don't even know they exist).
Also - the search function on the official forums absolutely fails. Once a thread is off the main page, it's dead. Except to the trolls. Stupid trolls. *grumble*
