Phat Loot Phriday: Arcanite Reaper

Name: Arcanite Reaper (Wowhead, Thottbot, Wowwiki)
Type: Rare (yes, it's not even Epic) Two-Hand Axe
Damage/Speed: 153-256/3.80 (53.8 DPS)
Abilities:
- +13 Stamina (this was before resilience was introduced to the game), +62 Attack Power (which is still substantial, but back then was phenomenal)
- And the main reason the Reaper was so nuts was because of it's slow attack, but high damage. Back in the day, before things got all normalized, Mortal Strike was the shiznit. It was an instant attack based on weapon damage, and since this weapon's damage was so high, pushed forward by the Attack Power bonus, Warriors basically owned PvP back around early level 60 times. In fact, you might even be able to trace the current population of Warriors back to this weapon alone, and for that reason, it's earned not only a place in Warriors' hearts, but in Blizzard's culture as well.
- I should also mention Shaman and Windfury weapon here, because back before all the changes were made to Windfury, and even before Shammies could dual wield, one Shaman with Windfury and this weapon could one-shot almost anyone. Nowadays, everything's mitigated, with nerfs and resilience and all the changes to endgame and Arena PvP. But back then, the Arcanite Reaper ruled the roost.
- Which explains why it's everywhere -- the Arcanite Ripper is a direct rip, if you will, off the old weapon, and brought many a tear to a Warrior's eye when it returned to the game as a guitar. The skin has also been reused a few times, as with the Spinal Reaper. And in the next expansion, there'll be an heirloom item bound to account called the Bloodied Arcanite Reaper, so all of your two-handed melee characters can relive the old days as they level up.
- Oh, and take a close look at that summoned Felguard running towards you while the Warlock's DoTs are ripping you apart -- he's carrying an old Arcanite Reaper as well.
But maybe you can find a Blacksmith with the plans already -- in that case, you'll need 20 Arcanite Bars, six Enchanted Leathers (made by an Enchanter from a Rugged Leather and a Lesser Eternal Essence), and two Dense Grinding Stones. Not a tall order, actually (yet another reason why this weapon was so popular). Melt it all together, and voila, you've got a classic weapon. Won't do much good these days, as mechanics and upgrades have rendered the once great Reaper into a not very attractive blue. But don't tell any grizzled old Warriors that -- they'll make you remember the old days whether you like it or not.
Getting Rid of It: Sells to vendors for 6g 57s 36c. Disenchants into a Large Brilliant Shard. Has killed more Mages than you'll ever meet, consarnit!

I've got a great story to tell about this one.
Alright, back in the day, I used to have my main (Who is now a 70 prot warrior) back on the server Thorium Brotherhood, which was created post BC - I saw a lot of people running around with the Arcanite Reaper, and I used to have my own little dreams of having one. Heck, the person whom I considered my mentor in warrior leveling would always come out brandishing one with his full valor set.
Now, I forgot about this gem when BC came out, as I was enthralled with getting some of the great crystal-style gear for my warrior, and saw less and less of the Arcanite Reaper - I still knew it was around, its just that so few people used it, and all of thsoe people were just bringing it out to show off in Role Play scenarios.
Time passed, and I transferred my main to Moon Guard (which was created at the time BC came out) and thats when I really started rolling in the gold. I figured "Hey, I'm rich now, why don't I go back and try to buy one of those Arcanite Reapers as a piece of history?"
Didn't occur to me at the time - No one hordeside had that recipe. At all. Seriously. I heard rumors about a high end raider who transferred from another server who had the recipe, but he had quit the game. I literally searched for days on end to find a blacksmith who could make me one.
My devotion to the crown jewel of warrior heritage finally brought me to a conclusive course of action - If I couldn't FIND a blacksmith who could make an Arcanite Reaper, I would have to MAKE a blacksmith that could do so. I called out in trade for a high level blacksmith (Who happened to be a blood elf paladin - Irony) to join me. For several hours, we went in and out of LBRS, went through six or seven resets, and killed the recipe dropper twice - The third time, we came out with the know-how of the Arcanite Reaper.
I felt victorous.
At least until I realized I was still going to have to pay for mats, crafting, and the time it took from his schedule to do this... But blastencrapper, IT WAS WORTH IT.

If there is one iconic weapon for warriors the Arcanite Reaper is it, and obtaining one was a Rite of Passage of sorts. Those were happy days when mages would not laugh if they saw a warrior heading over to them brandishing this fearsome axe.

Actually it is even represented here under powered comparedto what it was.
The 3.8 speed listed here was not it's original speed, it was more like 4.8 or something silly like that.
I know people have to remember those days when you could even get daggers in the 3.0 speed range heh.

This isn't even the half of it.
It was even more powerful than what's being represented here.
It actually used to be more like a 4.8 speed as were all 2handers back then and even some as high as 5.3.
Hell, you used to have daggers closer to 3.0 speeds.
Then normalization came in and along with it all weapon types were reduced to the speed ranges you see today.
