Ask a Lore Nerd: The Eye of the Tiger and the Warglaives of Azzinoth

Last week on Ask a Lore Nerd, Offsprnge (one of your fellow readers) asked me to write this week's edition with some Eye of the Tiger playing. I guess I came across a little tired last week, so I'm going to do just that. To fit the groove, I ask all of you guys one favor: Read the questions and answers in the voice of Rocky Balboa. If it will help you get in the mood, go ahead and read it out loud in that voice.
And since we're already talking about it, Offsprnge asked...
Right, I think I got a good one by the way, perhaps it is so obvious I should slap myself, but the whole battle for Mount Hyjal features the Burning Legion invading with it's commander Archimonde, however, why are there hordes of ghouls, liches, necromancers, frost wyrms and "all that kind of thing!" (find the reference).
Again, like another reader mentioned, at the time the Lich King was still feigning allegiance to the Burning Legion. It doesn't pay to make the Legion suspicious too early. At the same time, the Lich King played a role in weakening Archimonde's forces: He used Illidan to destroy Tichondrius and his forces, which were to play support for Archimonde. The Scourge that were at the Battle of Mount Hyjal were sacrifices, pawns to keep Archimonde overconfident.
Chupathingy asked...
What exactly is the Venture Co? There in several place and from what I can sorta tell they're based in STV, but what are their goals?
Their goals are to make lots and lots of money, as is typical of Goblins. Like the Steamwheedle Cartel, they're another branch of the massive Trade War that is Goblin society, and they pull in their profits by tapping and controlling natural resources. They have a habit of going overboard and completely clear cutting/strip mining an entire region. Their HQ is actually in the Undermine, the home of all Goblins. Stranglethorn Vale is just one of their mining operations.
You'll be seeing a little bit more of these guys in Northrend. Just a little, though.
Sesquame asked...
What's the story behind the Warglaives of Azzinoth? Where did they come from? Why are they special? How did Illidan get them? All the other legendaries seem to have huge lore storylines...
It's safe to say that most of the fame these blades carry is due to Illidan. According to the RPG books, they originally belonged to the demon Azzinoth, who Illidan destroyed. Illibeans took up his weapons as his own and trained himself to use them. Azzinoth was a generic doomguard commander of the Legion, nothing terribly special story-wise. The Warglaives are what they are because Illidan has been using them for so long, and has accomplished so much with them. If you look at other Demon Hunters nowadays, most of them are using similar glaives, so Illidan's expertise with his Warglaives probably inspired others to use them, whether they serve Illidan or not.
So through Illidan, warglaives have become the iconic demon hunter weapons, and the Warglaives of Azzinoth are the 'original' warglaives. All those that came after are mimicking them.
That's all we're going to cover for today, because I think people are running out of questions about current content! We're getting a lot of repeat questions, and I think that's going to be the case for another couple of weeks until Wrath is in our nerdy little hands. That's quite alright, though. In the meantime, if you haven't seen it yet, you can bop over to Know Your Lore for the Wrath prep guide I put together.

Why didn't the Scarlet Crusade notice that they were being "Controlled" by a dreadlord? Couldn't they see by the strange orders that were given, and what is the Argent Dawn -exactly-. I heard they were a part of the Crusade once?
TiM Nov 2nd 2008 5:59PM
The crusade and the dawn were offshoots from the Knights of the Silver Hand. When Arthas disbanded the Knights and went all evil the Crusade and the Dawn were founded. Both started off with similar goals but diverged along the way into their current forms. Could prolly blame alot of the crusade's zealotry on the organization being run by a dreadlord bent on revenge.

Actually the Argent Dawn splintered off from the Scarlet Crusade when Mograine stabbed his daddy with a holy sword and Fairbanks ratted out on him.

Hello
I have seen some sunken ships in the sea south of Arathi Highlands.
Is that connected to the lore?
Kanuris Nov 2nd 2008 8:31PM
Nope, those are ships belonging to the Blacksea Raiders which got sunk by some Naga, theres a little cove in the southern part of Arathi Highlands where the fleets last ship is located.

If you are speaking of the same ones that I think you are, you can actually go down behind stromgarde keep to access them. There is also a small quest chain there that may explain a bit about them...or may not, I can't quite remember.

There's a little more to them than just the small pirate type chain. If you move along the coastline of the "old kingdom" you'll find a ton of these such shipwrecks. While not perfect, these are for the most part the "battleships" used during WC2. It stands to reason then, after all the fighting that went on during WC2, that tons of such ships would be found scattered about. If you want to really get technical, you can look at the battles of WC2, and then co-releate where naval battles happened and with WoW. For the most part, the ship wrecks match up rather well.

How many people did Jaina Proudmoore have ogling her? There's Thrall and Kael'thas, but anyone else?
Argent Nov 3rd 2008 2:12AM
arthas.
Riley Nov 2nd 2008 5:53PM
Arthas
Xonate Nov 2nd 2008 5:54PM
Arthas. Don't forget him.
Zuldim Nov 2nd 2008 7:49PM
Every villian in the lore.
Including Azshara. Especially Azshara.
Skarlette Nov 2nd 2008 11:57PM
She and Arthas were officially an item, but the relationship cooled long before he added "Lich King" to his resume.
Kael'thas had a crush on her but it was one-sided. She only saw him as a colleague.
The Thrall connection is more of a "read between the lines" thing, buoyed by fan theories. (There is a punchcard in Gnomeregan that jokes in binary about it.)
justinkb Nov 3rd 2008 2:14AM
knaak hints that even deathwing had the hots for her, yet found her to have a bit too much of a mind of her own.
Zali Nov 3rd 2008 10:13AM
And me. In fact I've been trying to chat her up for a couple years now... but she always blows me off. Says she's busy, and then just ignores me.
Can't she see how much I care?
Brien Nov 2nd 2008 5:38PM
You're running out of questions yet you never tackled my epic question of why the Night Elf language is called Darnassian when Darnassus is a city that is only a few years old?
DId the Night Elves rename their language?
TiM Nov 2nd 2008 5:53PM
Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russel's best work. lol. Anyone seen my six demon bag lying around?
TiM Nov 2nd 2008 5:54PM
Damn it. Didn't mean for that to be a reply >.>
Bromnir Nov 2nd 2008 7:34PM
I suspect it hasn't been answered because the answer is probably a very un-lore-worthy "Blizz screwed up."
But to try and give an in-game reasoning... well, "Darnassian" is not the name for the language IN Darnassian. Since everything we see in-game (at least, if it's in a language we can understand) is translated into our local, Earthly tongue, you're seeing the localized version of the name. Similar to how the Night Elves call themselves "Kaldorei," yet we usually see that translated into its literal form - "Night Elves." The English word for Darnassian is
rather unimaginatively named after the Night Elves' modern capital city with no regard for their other past or present homes nor their rich and storied history, which is better captured by the native Darnassian word for the language. Which, as I don't speak Darnassian, I don't know.
FD Nov 2nd 2008 9:33PM
Wrong order. The language isn't named after the city - the city is named after the language. Night elves have always spoken 'Darnassian' or 'Darnassae', depending on how you wish to call it. Once Teldrassil was complete, they named the new capital 'Darnassus'.
Presumably this is due to whatever 'Darnassus' and 'Darnassian' *mean*, but as far as I know, we don't know what it translates to.
