Druid changes in patch 3.0.3
Patch 3.0.3 is here, and it's almost certainly the last patch before Wrath is released next Thursday. Unlike the other eight classes, we've gotten all our talent points refunded, which makes this a good opportunity to switch up your spec if you want to, maybe to whatever you'll be leveling with in Wrath. This isn't really because we got huge changes so much as it is because two of our talents were reduced in the number of ranks [edited for correctness]:
And for the ferals, we have a few bear-form buffs, and a small cat nerf:
- Earth and Moon is now 3 ranks for 4/9/13% increased spell damage taken, and increases your spell damage by 1/2/3% (old: 5 ranks for 3/5/8/10/13% increased damage taken from Arcane, Fire, Frost, Nature and Shadow, and increases your spell damage by 1/2/3/4/5%)
- Moonfury is now 3 ranks for 3/6/10% benefit (was 5 ranks for 2/4/6/8/10%)
- Eclipse's buff duration was raised to 15 seconds and its bonuses doubled, but the cooldown raised from 30 to 40 seconds. Overall a buff to what I still think is an inspired talent. (Although some of this seems to have already been live in 3.0.2? Boomkin, help me out.)
- Apparently Moonkin were getting way too much mana back from Hurricane, so Moonkin form now only gives mana back from single-target spells.
And for the ferals, we have a few bear-form buffs, and a small cat nerf:
- Bash will now interrupt spells even on stun-immune targets. Excellent.
- Berserk clears the cooldown on Mangle (Bear); there was a problem where using it while Mangle was on cooldown (i.e. most of the time) would not give its Mangle-cooldown-reducing benefit.
- Survival Instincts is now off the GCD, like its inspiration, Last Stand. Say what you will about homogenization, but I'm glad to have this tool.
- Growl's cooldown reduced to 8 seconds, again like the warrior version.
- Tiger's Fury ranks 5 and 6 (level 71 and 79) have had their bonus damage decreased. I've never really played with these ranks, so I have no idea whether this was necessary or not. Beta players?
- Nature's Swiftness and the Honorless Target buff gained when entering the world will no longer be able to trigger Omen of Clarity.
- Swiftmend will now properly benefit from Genesis.

Eclipse was already 3 points. Its Earth and Moon and Moonfury that went from 5 to 3.

Ah, I knew something was wrong there. Thank you.

Wow! the picture gives you info about flight form! Very cool. Have never seen that on a picture before lol.
Ekimus Nov 4th 2008 1:48PM
Huh, I just noticed that too. I guess WoWHead javascript just looks for any of their links, and applies the tooltip.

Thinking about speccing Boom but have been a feral for so long I've a couple of Q's.
I read/heard that Eclipse was a pretty crap talent spend, anyone confirm this with the reasoning behind it?
Should Wrath be in the moonkin rotation? Maybe I was looking a wrong beta tooltip a while back or maybe I misread or something but isn't the cast time vs mana vs dmg not worth it? Or just not worth it soloing/grinding but better for raiding or what?
Bobbo Nov 4th 2008 2:14PM
Without getting into hard numbers, the complaints around Eclipse are based around the proc watching and subsequent spell rotation shifting that would be required to take advantage of the spell buffs. For max dps purposes, it's just too much effort and/or inefficient. The buff to the bonuses in this patch is intended to offset that a bit, but EJ-types still don't find it to be worthwhile. That said, it can be good/fun to have for solo play or even 5-mans if you care more about variety than the tippy top of the meters.
As for Wrath, it shows up in some rotations on occasion, but it seems like the MF+SF rotations remain king for raid purposes (especially with the MF and SF glyphs, even after the SF nerf). That said, Wrath is the higher dps spell, so it's good for solo/grinding and PVP, especially if you care enough to toss in a few extra anti-interrupt/pushback talents or glyphs.

Thanks Bobbo, appreciate the reply :)

Thank you to bobbo I was thinking of going boom as well. But now I'm more thinking of switching from bear to cat now that cat is much more viable PvE and the PvP changes will help cat as well, it's kinda tough PvPing in full bear spec.

Its unfortunate that they took away mana returns from Hurricane. I always used it on AoE pulls to fill up my mana bar..
lowchin Nov 4th 2008 1:53PM
Why the hell cant we eat while stealthed as a cat? I understand why they took it away from shadowmeld but why cat form?
Diwata Nov 4th 2008 2:06PM
you can't eat while stealthed like before.
but you can eat then stealth.

Actually Earth & moon was also nerfed.
Before it was 5 points, and it would Increase Spell Damage by 5%. Now since its 3 points, it is only 3%.
Mitch Nov 4th 2008 4:05PM
If that change did go live I wouldn't really call it a nerf. Relatively speaking before it did 1% extra spell damage per talent point and it still does 1% extra spell damage per talent point, now it's just limited.
It just means you will hopefully use those two remaining talent points for something that will be of equal or greater value than the 2% spell damage you could have had. Everything is valued in Blizzard's system and they're just tweaking things around to get it right as they see it.
Turtlehead Nov 4th 2008 3:10PM
I know it's been asked and answered before but I can't remember: can the quest chains still be done if you've already purchased the vendor version?
All three are nifty chains, though how cool varies some depending on faction.
tekkfu Nov 4th 2008 2:33PM
Feral changes look like a minor fixes. TF nerf is nothing since we never saw it in live.
Wish they would kill the bloat in the feral tree too.
King of the jungle should taken out and just given to tiger fury and enrage.
Primal tenacity is a talent know one takes now. Make it useful Bizz.
kyle Nov 4th 2008 10:22PM
At 70 it does seem as if the feral tree is bloated..But given the fact that OoC is pretty much gone for feral spec, we will have plenty of points for KotJ whether you're bear or cat.
Thalium Nov 4th 2008 2:01PM
*sigh* Earth and Moon does *not* give the same effect as before with simply fewer talent points. Max rank of Earth and Moon grants a 3% increase in spell damage. Max rank of Earth and Moon before granted 5% increase in spell damage.
dcisko Nov 4th 2008 2:21PM
Pretty sure this is wrong. The original Dev comments said they'd keep the original benefit but reduce it to 3 pts needed. Do you have evidence that they rolled it back?
This is a buff, not a nerf.
Debesun Nov 4th 2008 2:21PM
I imagine this was done weigh out the changes to Eclipse and Blizzard really pushing us to spec Eclipse. (I spec'd it myself before the changes because even though it has been said to be a dps loss, it was just fun to use and mixed things up a bit.)
Manaless Nov 4th 2008 2:07PM
So, lets say you're a 62 Night Elf Druid. You're wanting to make it to 70 before next week. Which would be the faster spec to go about doing that... Boomkin or Feral Cat?
