Mage changes in patch 3.0.3
Mages, don't worry, you weren't left out of the love light this patch. Not at all. The number of bug fixes in your section of the patch notes does outweigh the number of substantive changes, but one of the substantive changes is very significant. Let's start with a bang:- Reduced the mana cost of Fireball, Frostbolt, Frostfire Bolt, Arcane Blast, Arcane Missiles, and Arcane Explosion.
Living Bomb, which has been something of a controversial talent, has also been polished a bit:
- Living Bomb: Mana cost reduced to be the same as Arcane Explosion; no longer causes the caster to stand up when the final explosion occurs, and it is now possible for each mage to have a Living Bomb active on a target.
- Brain Freeze: Now only works on Frost spells with a chilling effect (was all Frost spells)
- Cold as Ice: No longer reduces the cooldown for Deep Freeze
- Deep Freeze: Now consumes a Fingers of Frost charge when used
And finally, the bug fixes. They may not be glamorous, they may not be exciting, but these rank-and-file patch notes keep the game running smoothly.
- Arcane Potency: crit bonus is now consumed immediately on cast of a spell with travel time, so you can't get double benefits from combos like Fireball + Fireblast.
- Blast Wave no longer gets double the intended crit bonus from Combustion
- Burnout now consumes extra mana as intended when Living Bomb crits
- Focus Magic now works properly when mages use the ability on each other (kinky)
- Frostfire Bolt (rank 2): periodic damage now benefits from spell power gains
- Master of Elements now works with Living Bomb
- Molten Fury no longer prevents Ice Lance ranks 2 and 3 from dealing triple damage against frozen targets
- Torment of the Weak now works correctly when the mage also has Molten Fury

Or am I mistaken about how Brain Freezes procs?
Todd Nov 4th 2008 5:53PM
"No real way to sugar-coat all that, but it doesn't look too major to me, anyway."
Um, that's because Brain Freeze and Deep Freeze are, in most cases, lame. Both are best used for PvP, and even then, are extremely situational. While Brain Freeze does give a free damage shot, mages are probably being so quick with their spells they may never notice the buff proc'ed. Deep Freeze... forget a PvE setting. What a bum 61 talent.

While Deep Freeze is basically worthless (even in a PVP setting), Brain Freeze has incalculable worth. A free insta-cast Fireball is insanely useful, and better than a clearcasting by far, especially now that all the types of spellpower have been consolidated.

You don't need to snare the target for BrFr to proc, it can proc on the cast of any spell that has a snare component, if it works how it used to work.
So if your Blizzard is improved, the moment you cast Blizzard can net you a BrFr proc, but not each tick. Kinda like Clearcasting procs and Arcane Missles.
And Fingers of Frost makes me very, very happy as frost in instances. Very. Supremely.

Tested tonight, Imp Blizzard does not proc Brain Freeze, probably a bug.
Inureck Nov 4th 2008 5:59PM
So are they going to change it so that when you do have a target frozen it does not consume one of your Fingers of Frost simultaneously?
Kelam Nov 4th 2008 6:37PM
In some ways frost did need a nerf, if you have t6 you can walk around in 350ish passive haste and then have icy veins for ~1.7sec frostbolts that crit for ~5k. Kinda scary with the right group comp. But remember these balance changes are supposed to be balanced around 80, so it is hard for most of us to tell if it really needed it.

fire = PvE
frost = PvP
welcome to the world of mages.
stop whining about deep freeze. If you want to do real damage, spec fire.

Sure hope this is not a response to deep freeze (51 point talent of frost) since most raid spec'd mages don't go for living bomb (51 point talent of fire).

I've gone back to my original spec... Arcane. LOVE IT!
I was arcane from level 1 to 40ish and then i switched to Arc/Fire. At 70, i played arc/frost then full frost because I pvp.
I still remain frost when in pve.
I miss my frost armour but loving the instant burst dmg by the arcane tree. I will be spending the rest of my 10 points on Fire to be a POM Pyro Arcane mage again.
WOOT WOOT

"Now only works on Frost spells with a chilling effect (was all Frost spells)"
So if you Glyph frostbolt so it doesn't slows, will the proc no longer occure off frostbolt?
If so then frost specc would be abosultly even more pointless for pve raiding than it is already.
I just hope that glyphs doesn't affect this.
Neofox Nov 4th 2008 11:15PM
No, Frost did not need to be nerfed.
"Focus Magic now works properly when mages use the ability on each other (kinky)"
BWAHAHAHAHA XD
LukeD Nov 5th 2008 5:50AM
Well thats awsome nothing there will effect me. people moan about mages when were easy to kill and fair enuf cloth we should do good damage :D

tatarynowicz Nov 5th 2008 6:59PM
Maybe blink should simply break all cc and increase speed by 5000% for 0.1 seconds or something.
Wood Nov 8th 2008 7:26AM
Just go arcane and blow shit up :P
John Nov 11th 2008 9:28AM
Yeah I should just make a warlock, more damage and instant cast dots and a pet thats around all the time. Funny how they don't get nerfed badly.
