Addon Spotlight: New, old, and outdated!

Ho boy, what an exciting time to be a WoW player. New talents, crazy zombie plagues, even an infestation of Headless Horsemen tormenting towns. And of course our favorite patch mini-game, updating addons! By now the dust has settled and we have a better understanding of how the patch affected our addons. Hopefully the worst is over and it'll be smooth sailing as we install Wrath soon. This week in the Spotlight we'll look at new, updated, and retired addons as we rebuild our interfaces in preparation of our adventures in Northrend.
Now that we've all had a chance to rebuild our interfaces, you've probably noticed some of your favorites have undergone some pretty big changes. A lot of addon authors saw the 3.0 patch as a good opportunity to revisit their code and try to make improvements. In some cases this lead to a complete rewrite. Why reinvent the wheel you might ask? Well some authors might have felt they could write more efficient code, leading to a smaller memory footprint. Some addons can make use of new features that Blizzard implemented such as the internal threat meter. Some addon developers might of felt like it was time to either hang up their project and leave it to competitors, or to keep up the pace and evolve with the game. While it's frustrating to login and see your favorite addon is no longer in development, or completely different than how it was, you need to remember that change is good! Let's take a look at a few addons that shook off their stagnation and weren't afraid of change.
New and Improved
One of the key interface elements we use are action bars, and it just so happens each of the major players in this category have undergone a rewrite. First off, Bartender3 became Bartender4. This is one of the more minor rewrites seen by the user as the feature set remained mostly the same. Under the hood though the code is tighter and uses the newest Ace framework. I think the idea behind the rewrite was to stay up to date with the latest Ace libraries in order to help compatibility with other addons that might interact with Bartender4. All in all if you liked the old Bartender the new one should be a relatively painless transition, other than having to setup your action bars again. Unfortunately old user settings didn't survive the move.
Continuing our look at action bars we'll find that Bongos Bar has turned into Dominos. The author realized Bongos was slowly getting bloated as he implemented new features requested by users. I think he intended Bongos to be a lightweight enhancement to the default action bars and felt alternative bar addons handled the bells and whistles better. So after trimming the fat and rewriting the code Dominos was born. "Dominos is intended to be easier to maintain. I wanted to see how much I could do while maintaining compatibility with the standard action button code. I'm not entirely happy with the direction I took with Bongos3. I added features that I do not see myself using personally, and thus feel that those features will be neglected and bug ridden." Those wanting a little more customization than the default bars give you should give Dominos a look.

Rounding out our look at action bars is Macaroon, the successor to Trinity Bars. Trinity Bars was a favorite among people wanting every feature imaginable in an action bar addon. The good news is Macaroon is still as powerful as ever, while being easier for its author to grow and maintain. He explained his reasons for retiring Trinity Bars in favor of the new project in an interesting post to his users. It's a good read for those looking for insight on the thoughts and motivations of addon authors. The design process some addon authors go through mirror that of full blown software writers, and they should be applauded for their work. In short he felt he coded himself into a corner with Trinity Bars, and realized the best way out was to rewrite it using the knowledge learned from the old Trinity code. If you're familiar with Trinity Bars then Macaroon will feel natural. Like the name implies, Macaroon is centered around extending the macro system; giving the user more macro banks and increased character limits. Don't worry as the normal blizzard action id slots are still there too. And be sure to grab Macaroon Xtras to handle your xp/rep, bags, and menu bars. Macaroon is one of the more feature filled and complex action bar addons out there. It's pretty easy to setup, but the amount of options may be overwhelming to some. Give it a whirl and see how it fits you.
There are many more addons that underwent a radical upgrade, but they will have to wait and be featured later. I felt looking at action bars was a good starting point. Before we wrap up today's post, I wanted to take a look a few addons that aren't needed any more, and a few completely new.
Out with the Old, in With the New

On the not needed list is Fiizzwidget's Hunter's Helper. This addon helped keep track of abilities Hunter pet's learned, but now that they innately learn their abilities along with the new talent tree, this addon is retired. Another addon no longer needed is Menagerie. This addon helped collectors swap around their menagerie of mini pets when visiting the bank for a different one. Now that the new mini pet and mount system is
implemented, I would suggest you take a look at Zoo Keeper and Mounted. Mounted helps you by writing out a smart mount macro using a weighted list of your mounts. This lets you have a favorite mount that will be called forth most of the time when used, but allows you to show off your mount collection by mixing the chosen mount up a little with a random seed that's set by you. Zoo Keeper helps you sort your mini pets and mounts, and provides a fast way of accessing them with a key binding or Fubar/Titan widget. Our final new addon for today is Overachiever. This handy addon offers some tweaks that make going after achievements easier. This addon makes the achievement tracker persist through logouts, adds information to critter tooltips to see if you "/love" them, adds detailed information to the achievement tooltips, and much more./Salute Cosmos
Well that's all for today's Addon Spotlight. Expect to see more new and improved 3.0 addons featured soon, and look for an in depth article on the state of Fubar, Titan Bar, and LibDataBroker in the next Creamy GUI Center. Before we wrap for today I'd like to take a moment and give a big shout out to the Cosmos addon team. They announced that they are closing up shop after serving the WoW addon community since the very beginning. While a small handful of their addons will still be available as the author sees fit, the whole Cosmos package is being retired. I got my first taste of WoW interface enhancement thanks in part to the Cosmos team, and I wish them all the best in future endeavors. Rather you used their addons or not, they deserve props for all their effort and hard work. Thanks all and see you next time!

Dominos is not working for me and I miss some of the features from Bongos. I was actually surprised at how bad my add-ons have been since the patch, I'm not sure what the problem is. The new Auctioneer interface is too complicated and half my Titan add-ons don't work. Even T-bags is giving me an error where it refuses to hide the keychain (yes, keychain is set to 0). I'm about to give up!

I had been using Auctioneer but last week decided to take the new piece of crap out. I *shudder* have to use the Blizzard auction post. It was just too much. I went with the minimum needed, but it just wasn't the same.
Right now I'm looking for an Autobar replacement. I like the features of Autobar but it takes up increasingly more memory.
And to the person making Totemus: I will love you forever if you make a working version. I hate that its missing from my shaman's UI.
I think the biggest thing I miss is WoWAceUpdater. Curse and Wowmatrix are just not quite there yet.

I've gott'a agree with the praise of AuctioneerAdv, I don't see the lockup some are claiming and wonder what other addons they have that could be causing it.
I've just about got my UI working again, still missing a few. But, most of all I miss EquipEval, with the new itemization I'm pretty much lost whether the gear is better than what I'm using or not. I know that Blizz's reworking of power & attack and itemization would require a complete rewrite of EquipEval, and it's heavy dependence on Ace only complicates the matter; but if we could get a word from Lurker about his intentions it would stop me from hitting Curse 3 times a day.

Cosmos was my first add-on, too. It opened a whole new world for me. I wish the team all the best!

Dominos = simplicity. I've tried Pitbull, Bartender and many other bar mods but all of them quail next to the quiet simplicity that is Dom. Don't like the bar? Hide it. Want it back? Make it visible? Don't wanna see it? Opacity settings!
My only wish? Allow me to move my minimap again PLEASE! Please put that feature back!
Also: as much as I love CTMod, I'm beginning to dislike their CTBuffmod. With all the raid buffs/auras etc lately, the buffmod practically needs its' own side of the screen during expansion. And me with a smaller monitor, I'm forced to turn it OFF at times during 25mans where my screen aspodes with omgbuffdebuff and some rudely large error text when it encounters one.
I use Xperl for my frames. Can anyone recommend a new buffmod?
Lawgiver Nov 12th 2008 5:53AM
Little late at a response, but I use a couple of different buff addons that might work for you (though Im not familiar with CTBuffmod and how they stack up). For simple self buffs (like my lock and hunter) I use Smartbuffs; for more involved buffs for my pally, I use ZomgBuffs, which is also compatible with PallyPower run by other raid members.

Whats with all the Dev trolls for auctioneer?
The new auctioneer is horrible. Period.
Auctioneer classic was loved BECAUSE it was so simple, its the 5349858457623948756 options that WE DONT like.
Branch it. - Move the advertisment features, the autobuy Etc into another Add,
Give us back the simple what its worth, sell all stacks features into a "new" classic - Minus all the BS. - i dont care if it needs to scan every time i visit the auction house.. its the clusterBeepd settings that are killing it.
if there was a checkbox on the first page of options that said "Make it look like and work like classic" - it would solve this .. as it is i spent nearly an hour screwing with the settings (FAR FAR FAR from intuitive & with really POOR explanations of what each setting does) and still have "settled" for where i have it.
the Classic Auctioneeer was Simple, intuitive , and easy to use , the new one is None of these.
- Berating your Users for telling you they DONT like what your doing IS Poor PR , i dont care who you are or what you're working on.
-As for Buggy - ITS EXTREMELY buggy , even on Vanilla WoW (ONLY auctioneer installed), i get a tool tip error EVERY time i sign in and mouse over ANY item(every login), it errors on quite a few reagents regularly and chokes on pets/mounts items - sinister squashling comes to mind.

Love Macaroon, although it did have a small learning curve.
@andelorn - You can change the height and width of the xp bar in Macaroon via button editing...not intuitive at all, but it is there!
Instead of Mounted and ZooKeeper, I would recommend Livestock. It does both mounts and minipets for those like me who collect both and already have too many addons! :P

@Hoop: As far as I can tell, I'm the only Auctioneer dev that's posted in this comments thread, the other posts seem to have been normal users like yourself. There are a few bugs in Auc Advanced right now that we're actively working on, for all of them there are workarounds that are well publicized on the support forums. You don't have to like it, and you're welcome to use something else.
No user has ever been berated by an Auctioneer team member for voicing concern about the addon. Developers *have* gotten short with people who ignore what's already been posted, post unproductive whine fests, cop attitudes that are not conducive to fixing problems, or generally ignore etiquette when posting, but never for saying (after looking to make sure the question hasn't already been answered) "Hey, I don't like this about the addon, could something like this be done instead?"

This looks great, keep up the awesome work =D
Darkwhisp Nov 6th 2008 6:35PM
I wish Dominioes would bring back the click and drag to make your bars that is one thing I do really miss.
Cochin Nov 14th 2008 2:05PM
Is there such a thing as Reagent Restocker for hunters? I would like to be able to walk to an ammunition vendor and have it restock my arrows or bullets for me.
Thanks!
Ravenblood Nov 16th 2008 4:23AM
I have been using Auctioneer advanced long before the patch came out and forced everyone to move over. It has worked extremely well the whole time and ppl just need to change or move on and quit complaining. It works great except for a few minor bugs.

I have been reading WoW Insider and Addon Spotlight for a while and usually trust what is written and suggested. With that said I downloaded and tried some of the mods recently suggested in this column. Bartender4, SunnArt to name a few. Well within one day of using these new mods I was hacked. I lost everything including my guild (I was GM). I just want to warn everyone to be very very careful with mods even when they come from a trusted source like WoW Insider. I am not mad at you guys at all. You did not write the mods or the trojan/keyloggers. I would suggest though that you do some serious research on this. Maybe in your infinite experience you can find the source and help get rid of it. Another thought this happened only after installing Wrath and it happened to a friend of mine as well after installing Wrath. Could Wrath have a backdoor or some other vulnerability that the devs and Blizz security missed? Something to think about.

Anyone downloading mods should consider using the Blizzard authenticator. Anyone at officer level or higher or with full access to a raiding guild bank should be required to use the authenticator. It's $6, adds seconds to logging into WoW and removes almost all of the worry from keyloggers/trojans/backdoor mods.
Also, auctioneer haters should check out Auctionator. Decent history, quick and makes posting items much easier with an up to date scan.
