Deals are slim for Wrath of the Lich King at retailers
We've got our first Wrath of the Lich King deal to report, and unfortunately, it's less than impressive. Apparently, if you buy the expansion at Best Buy next week, you'll be able to pick up a strategy guide for the game at 25% off. It's not a great deal, especially since Amazon is offering the guide at 34% off, with or without the game (and since you're a WoW Insider reader, you likely won't need the guide anyway). But it is a deal, and it is for Wrath, so there you go. We'd love to have better deals for you (folks like me who buy Gears of War 2 at Circuit City this week are picking up free gift cards and such), but nothing yet. There is good news, also, for people who are buying the expansion through Amazon -- apparently they're offering release-day delivery in some places, so even if you picked up the game at the online retailer, you could have it at exactly the same time (well, a few hours later, since there are midnight releases going around and shipped games usually don't show up until midmorning at least) as everybody else. That way, you won't miss a minute of the lag and frustration-inducing camping that will surely ensue just after launch.
If you hear about a deal or a special sale on Wrath next week, let us know. We've all spent way too much money on this game already -- every cent we can save is worth it.

Futureshop in Canada is offering 40% off WoLK if you trade-in two qualifying games.

If you pay money for the stategy guide, no matter how much you get off, you've wasted your money.

I find the idea of a strategy guide kind of hilarious. There is no way any in depth information wouldn't be obsolete before it was even printed. With as many changes that are being made right up to the last moment, how could it even have any value?
That said, who reads physical print these days?
joerendous Nov 5th 2008 9:41PM
i read them all the time in the bathroom. no sense in getting the jeebus phone wet!

I still subscribe to several print magazines. :) I agree that paper strategy guides for MMORPGs are useless, though. My subscriptions are for subject matter that won't be out of date by the time I receive my issue.

MMO strategy guides are something you read when you do a #2 and want to look at pretty pictures.

If it came with maps, the strat guide MIGHT be worth a few bucks... but I doubt it.
Arron Nov 5th 2008 7:46PM
the Only reason i can see anyone getting the guides is to have a Printed map of the areas.

Lich King, and some headphones for a pretty warm deal, not hot though unfortunately.
Craz Nov 5th 2008 7:49PM
gogamer.com has wotlk + headphones for $44.90, it use to be $39.90 for both though.

I've been a fan of Amazon's release day shipping for years now. The greatest thing about their "release day" shipping - which I observed with both WoW and TBC - is that "release day" for them is one day before the release. If they keep this up, those who ordered "release day" shipping will receive theirs on the 12th. At least, that's been my experience. Perhaps my geographical location has aided me, but I have no reason to think that's the case.

Lol, definately a few hours later. Even if they deliver it to you the same day, FedEx, and UPS, and USPS do not deliver at midnight :)
And for the rest of use who do not live near an Amazon Warehouse, it will be monday or tueday before it arrives, even if you choose next day (thanks amazon for over-charging for shipping, and not delivering).

You think blizz will offer an online account upgrade for people not interested in getting a physical box?
I don't think WOTLK will ship here anytime soon but I want to get started on leveling on release day. I tried looking through the blizz website and I've found no mention of this yet, any info is appreciated.

Not on release day. Burning Crusade came out for download like a month after it was released in physical form.
Jeriel Nov 5th 2008 9:41PM
Thanks for the info, but that SUCKS.
Roran Nov 5th 2008 9:57PM

Now THAT is a deal! :) I miss 7-11. We don't have them in Georgia...
Falstad Nov 5th 2008 10:02PM
Gamestop is offering an extra 20% (30% if you have their Edge card) on any games traded in toward Lich King. It's not a keychain or bumper sticker but it's still not too shabby!

I once saw a strat guide at Borders. I looked through the pages, and put it back on the shelf. All they explain is the obviously explainable.

Newegg's offering it for $37 with free shipping, but I anticipate waiting a couple days for it to arrive, unless they ship early
