Preparing for Wrath Day 8: Your bank
There's only 8 more days until Wrath's release. Each day until the release we'll take a look at one thing you can do to prepare for the expansion. Taking a half hour here and there to get things ready before release will let you spend more time in Northrend and less time doing some of the un-fun things. It might seem a tad strange now, but that big bank of yours is going to be more or less worthless once Wrath hits the streets. Just about everything is going to plummet in value. Liquidate your assets now or be in worse of a position than our real life economy is.
There are some exceptions to that of course. You'll probably want to hang onto enchanting mats, since they can still be useful and high-value in the long run. You might also considering hanging on to some herbs for those leveling inscription. Most other raw minerals however can probably be safely sold now.
The reason you want to clear out as much space as possible is to make room for all the new toys and materials you'll be getting as you travel around Northrend. Mines, flowers, leather, and cloth are all plentiful. Between 70 and 75 I had an extra 100 stacks of cloth laying around, and I'm a guy that likes to bandage after every fight.
If you're anxious about clearing out your bank you can always create a new bank alt, even going as far as to purchase a couple bank tabs via your own guild bank if you have the disposable income. But no matter what make sure that you've got as much free space in there as possible – it's going to fill up quickly in the icy north.

This is, partly, what I sent in to WoW Insider just a few days ago. I guess the whole 'rational economic argument' thing just made too much sense to refer to.

unfortunatly having DK's going into outlands they can mine their own fel iron+ so I going to bet that they are going to have a comparitivly(sic) small price change
value of Gold and what not added to the equation

I suppose it's possible some Deathknights will skill up mining, skinning or herbalism from 0 so they can gather in the Outland (they would be starting at 0 right?), but you can't deny that there will still be FAR less people in the outland gathering those materials (even with the influx of DK's).
Also many DK's will be used solely for the creation professions and not for gathering. People have an opportunity to start with a level 55 character and skill up a profession like jewelcrafting to benefit their main. Those people will not be gathering. They will be purchasing from the AH.
I think the main point from me and others is prices will not be going down on tradeskill mats. In fact there are a number of factors which will drive them up.

I partially disagree. A newly created death knight will need to level his/her professions from scratch. So I'm keeping all of my ores!
All the epic rubbish can go into the bin though.

Think about what happened with the mageweave/runecloth. Back in the day they could be sold for as little as 2-3g a stack. Now Mageweave(at least on my server) sells for upwards of 10g and runecloth, a little less. Why? Because not many ppl go backwards to farm it and people who are leveling spend less time in those zones thanks for the leveling speed increase.
Then you have people who want to powerlevel their tailoring or First Aid so they go to the AH to buy because it's just convenient. I have noticed that even now that Heroics are just that much easier primal nethers which used to sell for 100g a piece can really only be sold for 10-30g. For me, I'm thinking herbs/alchemy/inscription is the money maker as herbs supply two major professions as people want herbs for their pots/elixirs and they also want them for their glyphs.
bonse Nov 6th 2008 7:22AM
I'm not so sure about inscription, I may well be wrong, but follow my thinking...
For major glyphs, people wont be buying much of the time, mostly when they level to open a new slot, some when they respec. There are currently no exclusive patterns or rare drop ones; they are accessible to all scribes and so there are a lot on the market, the mats are not expensive to make or take long to farm and so major glyphs will be (and most already are) cheap on AH.
Minor glyphs are going for more because less people know them, but as more people learn them, the price gradually comes down to stay competitive, the key point here is there is currently a finite limit, 6 for each class, a total of 60, if you do minor inscription research for 60 days straight (and your level 1 bank alt can do this) you will know all of them, and so will most of your fellow players (and their bank alts) and so, again, not selling for much on AH.
Now, every time new glyphs become available the prices will boom again and then, as more people get them settle down to a market wide agreeable price, usually harder on the seller than the buyer as unlike inscription alchemy will keep the herb prices up even at low levels as people like to power level to their alchemist stones and lvl 80 equivilents.
I could be quite wrong, and if so, will happily acknowledge this. My suspicions are that the high level scrolls will be the money makers for raids that can find a gap in their buff slots. No mage in the raid? try scroll of intelligence only 10g each. Dunno, could work *shrug*

I sold alot of things a few weeks ago. I ended up with like 2k gold. then I spent that to lvl my LW back that I had droped.
neroli Nov 6th 2008 12:33AM
What do you think, as a tank should I keep resistance gear in my bank?
axxel Nov 6th 2008 1:09AM
I am actually stocking up on ores because of the DKs. I might roll one myself and i think I have enough to powerlevel her in BS and still have enough low level ores to make some money. If I don´t roll a DK I believe I can make a nice amount of cash selling the ores, it´s not like the cost me anything more than some time. I also got close to 17 k gold to start me off.
Viper007Bond Nov 6th 2008 1:17AM
I sold all of my enchanting mats. Starting right at 376 the enchanting spells will require WotLK mats, so I figure better to make the money off 30g for a single GPE then hang onto them. I can also buy mats off the AH as their price is plummeting. Hell, Voids are like 13g on my server now.
Spencer Nov 6th 2008 1:54AM
Prices for 2nd tier northrend mats will go down, Due to the fact that Northrend profession recipes start at level 350, so people will only need the lower stuff like fel iron or bolts of netherweave and such to PL professions, the only exception I can see is engineering, with the flying machine mats.
tomarus Nov 6th 2008 2:59AM
Also remember that there are some of us who need to finish leveling production professions to the range where we can start getting LK recipes. I, for example, took two gathering professions while leveling my main to 70 for the extra cash so I could afford my flying mount, then switched to blacksmithing when I joined a new guild and we didn't have anyone to make plate. I'm still only sitting at a BS of 250 because the current cost of powerleveling BS on my server is very high. I know I wasn't getting these kinds of prices selling stone and bars when I was doing mining. Luckily, I kept herbalism and the rush to try out inscription means I can bring in 200 - 300 gold a day just from collecting the exploration achievements.
fernando Nov 6th 2008 3:07AM
see no reason to liquidate staff, people still will be leveling characters and need copper and iron and basic herbs... see how cheap are the glyphs now? Saronite, new herbs, that is going to be the cheap staff due to excess of offer. I bet you stacks of netherweave cloth will go up over the standard 3 gold. Outland will be deserted and leveling First Aid still needed.
Jyra Nov 6th 2008 3:46AM
Ores are important to keep, as are most other base materials. Think of all those Death Knight trying to level Mining/Blacksmithing and not really wanting to go back to Elwynn Forest to mine Copper ore.
Last time we had new rollers (Draenei/Blood Elves in the main) with loads of high gold owning mains. These were buying ore, herbs, leather and enchanting materials at very high prices to save farming time.
So don't clear that bank out yet.
bendak Nov 6th 2008 7:05AM
If the price of level 60 materials during TBC is any indicator, it will be better to sell the stuff later for people who are leveling professions or need older enchants, etc.
Some stuff like perhaps epic gems may be worth liquidating now but it can be advantageous to hold onto some things.
mk Nov 6th 2008 9:12AM
anyone have thoughts about whether to sell primal nethers?
i sold a bunch of primals and other random crap but have held onto enchanting mats (an ungodly amount of them) and herbs. unfortunately i took a big loss when i sold some hearts of darkness that i had previously bought for an alt. it seems like it's already too late to sell off other items like gems...no idea what to do with all the runoff from my jc now :(
Drow Nov 7th 2008 9:34AM
I've been selling stuff here and there, and about to unload everything. I'm not to worried, it's all a profit in the end, and people are still raiding hard (I know we are trying to finish Sunwell), so at the very least, the day before release I'll hit the vendor. I now I am interested in DK lore, so I think I'll make one to see the quests then use it as a bank alt.
To prepare, I'm trying to max inscription, and I've got cooking to 365 and fishing to 315. So close!
Lienuss Nov 6th 2008 10:21AM
Ugh! I had a crazy hair up the bum a few weeks ago to try and lvl cooking and fishing, and i got both to around 200. Then I decided I ought to max LW. Then I got the PvP bug. Now i'm back to trying to max LW, (luckily the mats are dirt cheap! except those derned hides...) but I know I'll get more use in the short term outta the cooking and fishing! So much to do, so little time!
Barnister Nov 6th 2008 10:14AM
I cleared our 3-man-guild bank long before earning a lousy 70k gold...duh!
Beatphreek Nov 6th 2008 11:19AM
I think the only mats that will be relatively worthless will be BC gems. The green gems in WotLK are better than Epic BC gems, so I don't know who would bother with BC gems unless a JC just wanted to powerlevel with them. That's all I'm worried about selling off... within a few weeks all the BC stuff will jump back up in price as people get lazier and don't want to go back and farm.
I little patience will make enchanting mats, herbs, probably even some primals worth something again.
