Profession epics go BoE in Wrath
Specifically, Verimonde said that "There will not be a Stormherald type weapon 'high level crafter only,'" although there are, for instance, several BoE epic smithed weapons in Wrath. In his second post he explains the reasoning a little more: Blizzard didn't like that many people were picking professions based on what would make them the most powerful, as opposed to what they enjoyed.
One reason often given in favor of BoP gear from professions is that it gives players a reason to level an expensive crafting profession in the first place. If all crafter gear is BoE, you can take two lucrative gathering professions and simply buy the gear you want on the AH. In Wrath, all professions will have crafter-only perks; they just won't be epic items. For instance:
- Blacksmiths can add sockets to their items.
- Leatherworkers get "furs" - exclusive bracer enchants.
- Tailors get enchantments called Embroideries for their cloaks (and flying carpets).
- Enchanters get ring enchants (like in BC).
- Scribes get shoulder enchants, better than the faction-bought ones, as well as caster-oriented off-hands.
- Alchemists get increased effect and duration on flasks and elixirs, as well as Alchemist's Stones.
- Jewelcrafters get BoP gems and trinkets (as in BC).
- Engineers seem to be keeping their traditional arsenal of engineer-only items, including goggles.
Aside from the Alchemy perk, these all work out to be remarkably similar: a few extra stat points, one way or another. Which makes me think that I'm pretty unlikely to bother picking up new crafting professions on new characters. I'll level my 375 tailoring up to 450, but without the big rewards at the end, it doesn't seem worth it to go all the way from 0.

"I'll level my 375 tailoring up to 475, but without the big rewards at the end, it doesn't seem worth it to go all the way from 0."
You meant 375 to 450 right?
Also, In TBC, I dropped my 300+ mining for tailoring from 0 to 375 just for the FSW set. This is precisely the reason.
I don't care if Blizz decides to make them BoE or BoP, I'm not about exclusivity. But I do care that there WILL be an epic quality crafted gear that's equivalent or slightly better than Naxx-10 level.
Just as FSW + Spellstrike Set is about Tier 4.5 ish, slightly better than Kara and barely adequate for Gruul's / Magt, then I do want that the endgame crafter tailoring epics to be around Tier 7.5 ish. Otherwise it will just be too much gap between those who can run Naxx and heroics regularly with guildies and those like me who are stuck with PUGs.

Can Blacksmiths add a socket to items with already existing sockets?
If not, then what the hell is the point?
Blake Nov 7th 2008 5:40PM
Of course, otherwise, what would be the point?
They add a non-colored socket that does not affect the socket bonuses in that item.

This is excellent news to me. I've always thought it ridiculously illogical that you had to be a smith or w/e yourself just to hold a weapon or wear a robe. Nice to see the change.

Its too damned late now.
Ive hated what professions have become for a long time now. What muppet at Blizzard is responsible for the 1000s of gold you can sink trying to level leatherworking its final 5 points? Or enginnerings last 15 points for any race other than gnome? (Not that its cheap for gnomes even). And then placed arbitrary restrictions on the BoP items so some classes needed to run heroics, and others could just wait the 40 days to tranmute all the cloth.
anyway. sockets. Looks like all my characters *need* to be blacksmiths now. FU2 blizzard.

i wish engineers had an enchant like it seems every other profession has one. getting goggles, only to replace them with raid headpiece? no thanks. I'd rather enhance my existing gear somehow. surely there is a way to make engineers able to enchant SOMETHING.

A Goblin Rocket Launcher built into your gloves? A parachute cloak in every cloak you own?
Sounds good to me.

the only reason i have a profession is to get the high end epic item, if that does not exist then there is no point for the profession

Dude - this SUCKS.
My whole reason for leveling BS, and then going through the task of becoming a swordsmith was in order to make the Lionheart Executioner - and I have loved that weapon ever since I crafted it. And that's the point - I crafted it - it was a real sense of accomplishment, and I knew that not many people out there would have one - it was unique.
Taking away epic crafter-only BoPs COMPLETELY takes away the very reason I was a Blacksmith. This is like giving all of the cool engineering mounts to everyone, because Blizz doesn't think you should HAVE to be an engineer to get them. It just makes no sense to me - none at all. I was waiting with great excitement to see what the new weapons would be. This is like having your Christmas tree burn down on Christmas eve with all of the presents going up with it - Thanks Blizz...

actually the engineer dps plate helm from sunwell is the best helm for a fury warr or at least top 2.
WoWie Zowie Nov 7th 2008 4:21PM
ya, i'm pretty sure they have top haxx headpieces on the uber end game, but i replaced my destruction holo-gogs with T5 helm for the set bonus, and haven't raided sunwell =\
i just want 1 engineering enchant is all. like a mechanical stupendifier or something wacky like that.

All this does is reaffirm my decision to make my MAIN a Miner/Skinner.
I'm farming and selling mats to make momey for my War Mammouth.
You guys can make your silly BoE's if you want - they'll be obsolete after 1 Level 80 Dungeon run.
Skarlette Nov 7th 2008 4:54PM
Yeah, my main is an herbalist/skinner. I've thought about picking up tailoring, enchanting, alchemy, or inscription, but I haven't found a compelling reason to do so.
I can gather the mats or gold easily for a guildmate or alt to brew/craft/enchant whatever I need. Sure, there are some very nice BOP crafted items, but I'm not hardcore enough to feel I absolutely HAD to have those.
I was making money hand over fist selling herbs and leather as I leveled 60 to 70 when TBC was released. I didn't even mind the "kill 100 animals" type quests, since it meant big profit from all the leather. I joked that I got my epic flying mount from nothing but Felweed and Knothide Leather Scraps, and it wasn't that far from the truth.
Across my army of alts on my main server, I have everything except blacksmithing and inscription pretty much covered, and my guildies can fill in the blanks.
Plus with two gathering professions I can just mail everything to my bank alt and not worry about my main's inventory overflowing with profession stuff. I absolutely hate the space crunch caused by engineering.

I can't say I'm happy about this.
Fine, not everybody can raid or spend all their time in arenas/BGs, but to make everything of relative value BoE just shoves them in the "grind gold and just pay for your character's progression" as there's no other way to improve ourselves at cap level.
Furthermore, isn't this just encouraging gold sellers once again?
Candina@WH Nov 7th 2008 5:36PM
I actually believe this reduces the demand for gold.
Since all craftable, purchaseable gear is going to be of inferior quality to raid/arena/badge gear, the demand for this gear is going to be reduced.
Since people won't be demanding the massive amounts of materials necessary to make craftable gear, the demand for materials will go down. Which makes it less profitable to grind gold to sell.
The hey-day of the gold seller was before dailies, when gold was scarce and time consuming to grind AND people demanded materials to produce craftable goods.
Gold is plentiful (dailies and quest rewards), and demands for materials is moderated. Demand for purchased gold will go down.
Dandruff Nov 7th 2008 4:34PM
Too bad the alchemy bonus doesn't make elixers persist through death like flasks. xD
Calcifur Nov 7th 2008 4:42PM
If professions don't have specific BoP items, I just say charge huge tips for what would have been the professions BoP items. Only way to make it worth wild.
I just level a 70 warrior with Blacksmithing and now it seems kind of pointless seeing as stormherald is BoE. Now it seems more like a waste of time...
Shadiix Nov 7th 2008 4:45PM
I'm just gonna laugh at anyone who is talking about removing something like frozen shadoweave/spellfire from tailoring because it removes uniqueness.... LMAO! Everyone and their entire families that had any brains had these sets come 70. I barely know a single cloth caster that isn't a tailor now because of these... how is that unique?
Shanic Nov 7th 2008 4:48PM
I think, as an exchange, all professions should be easy as Alchemy to level, and that the benefits of Mixology scale with Alchemist skill. ATM, they do not, and it does not, so any person with half a brain and a raider should have 50 Alchemy for the easy benefit it provides.
The rest should head for other easier to level professions.
The main thing is that if these passive benefits are the only true benefit to a profession, and most professions aren't considered fun regardless, AND some have an easier time acquiring their benefit, those will be the default. The fact Mixology just grants you a free flask for free when you get it is icing on the cake.
Shanic Nov 7th 2008 4:51PM
As an addendum to myself, think of Blacksmiths, who must spend in addition to the mats for each socket the cost of the gem as well.
Now compare that to Jewelcrafting who not only get a stat upgrade gem but also the fact it can match socket color requirements.
There are so many holes in this I don't know where to start...
