BigRedKitty: An open apology to everybody

Our Baby Tauren Army had 897 baby Taurens, peacefully hanging out and dancing. We had a fifty-five level 70s in two raids, ready to plow the way into Stormwind. Then, at the appointed hour of 6pm EST, we started for Ratchet, and the lag started. GMs started whispering people in our newly-formed guild, telling us of dire consequences if our actions didn't stop.
Had we spoken directly with a GM, we imagine the conversation would've gone like this:
"Dear BRK. Shut it down. Love, the Blizz GMs."
"But it's just a little lag..."
"You don't understand. You have 1000 people in your raids. The Alliance has 300 or so people guarding Stormwind..."
"Three hundred?"
"Almost all 70s, too. Couple of raids full. We can't handle that PvP battle, the server is already wobbly. Shut it down now, spread out, do something or... just do something."
"You got it, we're done. Crashing servers is not what we want to do."
So we ended it, as soon as we were told to end it. But it wasn't soon enough, Argent Dawn was locked to new character creation, and then, we think, rebooted.
The authenticator server going off-line? Was that a result of our raid? No idea, but let's just assume it was.
We did it. We apologize.
Many people have said that choosing Argent Dawn was a bad idea from the beginning. Our friends there assured us that weekends, especially at our 6pm start time, shouldn't be bad at all. And it really wasn't. There was never a login issue or lag problem, until we started running to Ratchet. Yes, then stuff started hitting the fan.
But what we heard was that it was the potential for further catastrophe that concerned Blizz the most, not the current situation. Yes there were disconnects, by the truck load. But as the army spread out, things calmed down. We are assuming they shut us down and rebooted the server to prevent anything worse from happening.
Although we've said it many times, we never once considered crashing the server a goal. Quite the contrary, we wanted to keep it up so we could have our battle at Stormwind. The fact that it was shut down neither pleases nor thrills us. We may be guilty of many things, but schadenfreude is not one of them.
If you were adversely affected, we're very sorry for your troubles; it was not intentional. If you joined the raid and were disappointed we didn't make it to Stormwind, we wish things had gone better. If you were part of the Alliance raid waiting for us, you just lucked out, (we would've cleaned your clock.)
But above all, regardless if you're angry or happy, we hope that you chose to make a small donation to our cause. No matter what you may think of us, we hope you didn't let that affect your decision to help a sick child.
Now please excuse us, we're gonna pull a Yoda and disappear for a while.
Oh. If you want to flame us, we can handle that. But if you want to flame our cause, think twice. Please.

Disagreeing is acceptable and understandable.
Disrespecting is repulsive.
Big Kudos to BRK for organizing the event. Also big kudos to BRK for dispersing when the GMs requested it. And big kudos one more time to BRK for admitting the outcome and apologizing soon after it happened. Obviously turn out was much higher than anticipated, and obviously it was too late to correct the stability. Great way to honor Ezra.

You had an ACTUAL army, not some AV battle (Which they try to portray as large scale), but an army...

Ummm wow, my question is what if Wintergrasp becomes a success? Will there be server crashes all the time. Will guilds go battle it out and before people realize it there will be hundreds of players. Could lets say 3 to 5 hundred crash a world server all in one zone?

The way I understand it, the number of data packets required increases exponentially based on the number of players present...
Correct me if I'm wrong but:
If you have one player, you need 1 data packet for the environment. 1 packet
If you have 2 players, you need 1 data packet for the environment and one data packet of information on the other player, updated regularly, for each of the 2 players, 4 packets.
If you have 3 players, you need 1 data packet for the environment and 2 data packets on the other players for each of the 3 player, 9 packets.
If you have 1000 players, you need 1 data packet for the environment and 999 data packets on the other players for each of the 1000 players, 1 million data packets...
As you can see, since the number of data packets required increases exponentially, with the number of players you had I do not think a server anywhere would be stable once you start pvping, since when someone casts a spell it requires additional data packets to be sent out to all other players. And seeing as how pvp is often 1 instant cast spell followed by another, it could add up extremely quickly, bringing the server to it's knees... Possibly stressing the hardware enough to permanently damage it. Permanent damage = bad

There's no way to overload a server or a network to that point that hardware is physically damaged. Closest to "physical" damage might be overloading the file I/O and causing a file table to go bad, but still... zero out the drive, restore from a backup, and it's back to good.

the server sends and recives thousands of packets between just one player because some get lost in transaction so for smooth gameplay they have to ensure that nothing gets lost and that information transfers through perfectly so my shield bash doesn't hit a second too late, Blizzard's servers are amazing i assume and it's understandable that 800+ players crash their servers. Amazing idea guys hopefully you'll get to do it and finish it one day.

alwaypwns: That is not exponential growth at all, it is quadratic growth (x^2 instead of 2^x). There is a difference:
1000^2 = 1000000,
2^1000 = billions and billions and billions of times more than there are elementary particles in the entire observable universe.

BRK can permanently damage my server any day he likes! :-)

Ahaha, 897 level 1's? That's awesome.
Kakistocracy Nov 8th 2008 10:02PM
Against 300 level 70's, sounds like some sort of movie/graphic novel/historic reference.
JJV Nov 9th 2008 4:18AM
Sounds like 300!
GM: BRK This is Madness!!!!
BRK: THIS IS HORDE!!!!!

Idiots.
Vududadie Nov 8th 2008 8:29PM
Real intelligent post there, Jack. Look whose talking.
Anyways, was glad to be a part of it and glad to talk to you on vent, BRK. It was a valiant attempt - I only wish we'd made it to Stormwind before it got real bad.
Zeldaguard Nov 8th 2008 8:21PM
I was wondering why I couldn't log in...
good job BRK :D

Dear BRK,
Good on you mate!
Donation made :-)

noble cause, not a problem.
Matt Nov 8th 2008 8:22PM
Come to The Underbog and do your raid! We are underpopulated and have plenty of room :)
Savant Nov 9th 2008 3:50PM
A very noble intent by all involved, but a horrid horrid server choice. Honestly, this is one of the highest populated servers already. (Blizzard has said it is in the top 10 - although I don't have a quote since the post was deleted - warcraft realms shows the census as 15th population overall, but short on Horde submissions.) What's more, the server is part of a server farm (Ruin) that has a large number of highly populated realms on it since it is so old. (These servers all date back to December 2004)
I really wish some forethought would have been put into the server choice. From a hardware perspective it was literally the absolute worst choice possible. Again, a noble intent, perhaps next time try not to choose the most populated server and server farm, reegardless of when you go.
Firost Nov 8th 2008 8:23PM
Bummer, I wanted to see footage of a thousand people smashing into each other and razing SW to the ground.
I'm sure it was awesome just having that many people running around.
