BigRedKitty: An open apology to everybody

Our Baby Tauren Army had 897 baby Taurens, peacefully hanging out and dancing. We had a fifty-five level 70s in two raids, ready to plow the way into Stormwind. Then, at the appointed hour of 6pm EST, we started for Ratchet, and the lag started. GMs started whispering people in our newly-formed guild, telling us of dire consequences if our actions didn't stop.
Had we spoken directly with a GM, we imagine the conversation would've gone like this:
"Dear BRK. Shut it down. Love, the Blizz GMs."
"But it's just a little lag..."
"You don't understand. You have 1000 people in your raids. The Alliance has 300 or so people guarding Stormwind..."
"Three hundred?"
"Almost all 70s, too. Couple of raids full. We can't handle that PvP battle, the server is already wobbly. Shut it down now, spread out, do something or... just do something."
"You got it, we're done. Crashing servers is not what we want to do."
So we ended it, as soon as we were told to end it. But it wasn't soon enough, Argent Dawn was locked to new character creation, and then, we think, rebooted.
The authenticator server going off-line? Was that a result of our raid? No idea, but let's just assume it was.
We did it. We apologize.
Many people have said that choosing Argent Dawn was a bad idea from the beginning. Our friends there assured us that weekends, especially at our 6pm start time, shouldn't be bad at all. And it really wasn't. There was never a login issue or lag problem, until we started running to Ratchet. Yes, then stuff started hitting the fan.
But what we heard was that it was the potential for further catastrophe that concerned Blizz the most, not the current situation. Yes there were disconnects, by the truck load. But as the army spread out, things calmed down. We are assuming they shut us down and rebooted the server to prevent anything worse from happening.
Although we've said it many times, we never once considered crashing the server a goal. Quite the contrary, we wanted to keep it up so we could have our battle at Stormwind. The fact that it was shut down neither pleases nor thrills us. We may be guilty of many things, but schadenfreude is not one of them.
If you were adversely affected, we're very sorry for your troubles; it was not intentional. If you joined the raid and were disappointed we didn't make it to Stormwind, we wish things had gone better. If you were part of the Alliance raid waiting for us, you just lucked out, (we would've cleaned your clock.)
But above all, regardless if you're angry or happy, we hope that you chose to make a small donation to our cause. No matter what you may think of us, we hope you didn't let that affect your decision to help a sick child.
Now please excuse us, we're gonna pull a Yoda and disappear for a while.
Oh. If you want to flame us, we can handle that. But if you want to flame our cause, think twice. Please.

Your inspiration? Highly worthy.
Planning an insanely large PvP event during a time of record-setting server instability? Not too smart :(
Catastrophe Nov 8th 2008 8:44PM
It was for a good cause, BRK. Sorry I missed the muster. I was looking forward to the event.

It was a great thought for Ezra, but Argent Dawn is an overpopulated and *old* server. We have issues with our own people on the servers on weekends at night with queues expecially this close to expansion (with returning players and such)
All in all, good thought, but it was too much for *any* server to handle.
Moohnra Nov 8th 2008 8:50PM
It was awesome man. I hope blizz takes this as a stress test, cause this is what's going to happen in the new continent and DK starting zones...

Detarg-US is one of the oldest servers in WoW, it has an extremely low population. At 3am, there are usually no more then 100 of either faction online. We have had free transfers more then once to our server, and still we are a low pop server. Perhaps next time, you can research better. Hitting our server at 3 am PST, would have been a much better bet, then the idiocy of what you tried on a medium to high pop server.
As the admin of rpg-exploiters, I have seen and heard a lot of things. I can still remember some years ago, back in 2005, when attacking SW, would cause not just lag, but server rollbacks, crashes, and everything else that is associated with lag. Here is a breakdown of what happens... the server has to keep respawning guards, and if you are attacking a city, the way that Blizzard does it now, is to almost insta-respawn guards. This attributes to the server lagging in other areas. What will first happen, is that you will crash the landblock. If there are still people on other landblocks attacking other cities, then multiple parts of the server can go down.
Now when a landblock goes down, the server will attempt to save everyone's items, skills, and gold. This causes more stress to the server which will in turn cause the whole thing to go down.
From an exploiter's point of view, this is a great time to be on, because when the server is about to go down, it causes bugs, that can then be exploited.
Back in 2005, there was an addon/game hack, that allowed people to warp around, speedhack, and a ton more. Essentially, all this warping and speeding, caused the servers to have stability issues as well. In the end this became a top priority to Blizzard to catch this program and it's users, because not only was it not fair to the other players who played on PvP servers, but also because of the server issues, making users not able to enjoy the game.
In the end all I can say is great idea... poor planning and execution.

I'm sorry, but you really expect a good turnout at 3AM? give me a break. He did this on a Saturday at a normal time so as to let everyone who wanted to be involved have a chance. Not everyone is going to stay up till 3AM to raid SW no matter who's memory it's in.
Ragefire Nov 8th 2008 8:52PM
Ok if they caused the servers to go down, how come all the servers were affected... It was a WOW issue not an issue with this event. This was for a noble cause and I hope more people try to do stuff to better the world.
So if your gonna give them troube for this think about it and deal with it, it was for a good reason, there was no intent to upset anyone or anything else, it was all about doing a good thing for a good cause. So if you dont like it, tough.

I've commented more on my blog, but I'm a native AD player and I decided to join in with this. I don't see how it could be seen as anything but positive. So what if it crashed the servers for a bit? It's not the end of the world.
Muffiny Nov 8th 2008 9:45PM
Agreed.
Ilem Nov 8th 2008 8:57PM
BRK, calling the raid off when you did was the decent thing to do. It was fun to be part of the huge baby Tauren herd running towards Ratchet, and good to see so many people came out and donated in Ezra's honor. Hopefully, there won't be any dire consequences for you or anyone participating in the event--I think everyone at Blizzard understands the good intentions, even though we maxed out the servers' capabilities.
WatcherZero Nov 8th 2008 9:05PM
In our servers experience as few as 100v100 in a city raid will give latencies in the 10's of seconds and cause repeated crashs and failed continent transfers (get on the boat and you will be ported back).
Xian Nov 8th 2008 9:07PM
As to the server crashes being forseeable..
This is not the first such event BRK has organized.
There have been 3 more before it. None of those crashed servers like this.
This one had a much higher turnout.
Lotharwales Nov 8th 2008 9:08PM
To the person that wanted to grind of his achievements. Enjoy Wrath have a great time everytime you log on to play and i hope you think of that everytime you realize how lucky you are your able to still.

Fuzzy Nov 8th 2008 9:18PM
BRK, don't let the QQ get you down! This is a wonderful idea and money was raised for a brilliant charity.
I donated to Make A Wish as well as a local cancer hospice :)
Heyjude Nov 8th 2008 9:11PM

Mulvita Nov 8th 2008 9:15PM
I think it was a good idea, and though it didnt go as planned for your event, you convinced a mage on misha to make a donation. So ya, you way to honor him didnt go quite as planned, but it touched the hearts of a few ppl! Good job BRK!
Xarthan Nov 8th 2008 9:19PM
