WoW, Casually: The Dos and Don'ts of speedy leveling before Wrath

Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player with limited playtime.
A lot of people are scurrying to level up before Wrath of the Lich King hits ... like me. Some are trying to get their first characters to 55 so that they can make Death Knights. Some are trying to get their first characters to level 70 so that they can enjoy the new content in Northrend. And others are trying to bring up as many characters to 70 as possible so that they have a choice as to whom to level to 80. I have a level 70 druid, but I have recently become obsessed with my mage and am trying to see how far I can get her before the expansion in the limited time I have to play.
Here are some Dos and Don'ts to help you get some speedy leveling done before Launch Day.

Here are some Dos and Don'ts to help you get some speedy leveling done before Launch Day.
Do read leveling guides
WoW Insider has some great leveling guides for each class. These guides have collected everything special your class can do and should know for specific level ranges. You will often find me enthusing about Jame's leveling guides as well, particularly his Horde one. The maps and efficient quest groupings make this guide invaluable to the casual player.
Don't pug instances
Completing instances with good groups can be a great way to level up and get appropriate gear for easier questing. Running instances with pugs are most likely to be time consuming, frustrating experiences that will take up all of your play sessions and then some. There are plenty of quests that can be soloed from 1 to 70 and that way you are the master of your own time.
Do maximize your rest
You of course know that logging out in big cities and inns is the smart thing to do. Also, do any crafting or chatting in these places so that you are accumulating more rest during your non-questing time. If you are trying to level up multiple characters (I know some of you are afflicted with altitis), swap between them so that you only play the rested ones.
Don't go AFK in contested areas on PvP servers
Captain Obvious says, "Duh!" Of course, we casual players are well aware that real life interferes when we least expect it and the resulting deaths just can't be helped. If you can, however, try to get to a safe place before going AFK or else expect to face a scene similar to the one pictured above.
Don't worry about revenge
During the lazy days of summer, logging off to get your main and thump the twerp who just thumped you can be fun and rewarding, in an eye for an eye kind of way. But now that Wrath is almost upon us, if you really want to level quickly, it's best to just brush yourself off and continue with your questing.
Do level your professions as you go
Now that Gathering Professions give you abilities that help you in battle (I adore Lifeblood), there really is no reason to not level up a gathering profession (or two) as you go. Leveling the crafting professions can also help you keep current on gear which only makes questing easier. But I also recommend First Aid and Cooking as well. The quests at skill level 225 for both of these secondary professions give a lot of experience and having extra bandages and food buffs certainly isn't going to slow down your leveling. The farther you are along on your professions when Wrath hits, the more you can take advantage of the new benefits the expansion brings.
Do complete the quests when they're green
I'm sure you're OP and can handle the orange quests, but completing quests when they are green is faster than completing the yellow and above quests. The mobs go down more quickly and you are able to handle more simultaneously. It isn't always possible to stay ahead of the quests, but when you can, do.
Don't sweat the deadline
If you have played any MMO from the beginning or this isn't your first expansion, then you already know that the first few days are always rocky. Even if the developers have done their job perfectly and the hardware works without a hitch, there will still be dozens of people in every immediately accessible new area. They will be lagging the same zones, camping the same spawns and gathering the same resources. Do you really want to be hanging out in the DK starting area listening to the ramblings of Dkpwnsu, Dethknyte and Arrrthess? Waiting a day or two for the masses to race through will probably enhance the quality of your playtime quite a bit.
Do enjoy the journey
If you don't even come close to reaching your level goal by the time you are ready and able to play the expansion (I won't), don't be too hard on yourself. I think most casual players know that it's the journey that makes this game so much fun. Racing through the new content so that you can run the same Battlegrounds, Instances and Dailies over and over until the next expansion is not necessarily the best way to maximize your fun. Stop and smell the Talandra's Roses. I know I will.

Arrrthes?
That settles it. I'm rolling a Pirate Death Knight called Yarrthas.

You, sir, have just won WoW

This should be a Sticky as the way to approach the game. Fun and light-hearted. Send this over to the douche who was QQ'ing about the server crash during the Tauren army invasion of Stormwind for charity. And then punch him in the frickin' throat......

Do read leveling guides:
Wait for wowhead->lightheaded to be updated
Don't pug instances:
You can pug instances, just do them with players in T4+
Do level your professions as you go:
Just remember that you won't get uber BoP items from them anymore
I'd add:
Plan your rep:
if you gain rep with a factions with turn ins AND quests/instances, do the former first. In TBC turn ins worked till some reputation level, while q gave always the same reputation.
This can change due to championing of course, but still...

Leveling a mage right now, and absolutely love going trough green quests. Partially because I have rather twinked gear, friend boosted me in SM and RFD so I get as much spellpower as possible, and elixirs help as well.

you can level your character to 68 in order to get to Northrend, no need to go up to 70
Caustik Nov 8th 2008 7:32PM
Since the 3.0.2, leveling pug aren't painful anymore : tanks can dish out tons of aggro, dps can spam their abilities earlier.
I've done 2underbogs & 1slave pens in less than 1h30 with a palatank, and being full rested, received loads of xp.
Now, the way the aggro is going to scale through Northrend is another story.

We have a few new players in the guild who insist on playing their main characters every day, so they have no rested bonus. They "need" to run Uldaman, then they "need" the Princess in Mara and can't believe no one else wants to spend hours of their own gaming time getting to her. Never mind they could have dinged 4 levels while sitting in Ironforge, staring at their quest log. Then they need to get to Outland the second they hit 58. Then I get whispers asking for help in Hellfire. Not with the Matriarch, Overlord or Colossus, but with orcs and demons. And then they ask me how I leveled my younger toon right past them and to 70 so fast. Chill. The. Hell. Out. And listen. That's how.

Since I am in the 40's right now, I've discovered that Blizzard seems to have made the game a lot easier. Lots of little things: death running is faster, holding your breath is longer, skinning is faster, plus the damage seems to have gone up a lot, I am routinely handling elites 2-3 levels above mine now.
I'm not so sure green quests are worth it, yellows are so easy now they are about the same as greens used to be.. unless you are doing them for the fun factor of course.

Nice post, but i disagree with alot of it. First, for a casual player, you really want to level your profs and cooking etc, this is true. However for alts, i would never level cooking/fishing on more than one toon per server. Further, professions can be done while leveling but it greatly increases the leveling time. Anything except herbalism/skinning will vastly increase your leveling time. Additionally, many buff foods are quite inexpensive, for example spicy talbuk on our server sells for about 5 silver each.
Lastly, to save time: do not loot unless you need to, do not die at all - always carry a full stack of level appropriate health pots and do not be afraid to use them! It wastes alot of time to die repeatedly. If you are dying, get greens from the AH or do a instance run, or find an easier spot to level.
Eversor Nov 8th 2008 8:17PM
Allow me to disagree about that only skinning/herbalism don't slow you down. Alchemy levels up very fast as well, and it really helps in leveling. My currently 40 mage has alchemy up at 275 already, and I haven't gone out of my way much, except for spending an hour in Swamp of Sorrows farming mats for Arcane Elixirs and Greater Intellect Elixirs.

"Lastly, to save time: do not loot unless you need to"
Did I miss the part when Robin Torres advised readers to loot everything?
That and this article is for WOW Casually. Casually. With this advice, you make it seem like shaving a few seconds off getting into Northrend will help you steal the Gold Medal.
"Do not die at all"
Ok I know you're making a list of all the reasons why you disagree with Robin's post but come on! It's not like Robin told everyone to die all the time.
Schadenfreude Nov 8th 2008 10:11PM
For a new player, I'd recommend looting everything. Every bit is important when you're trying to earn your first hundred (or thousand) gold.
Merri Nov 9th 2008 4:44AM
Yeah, don't loot anything...just spend an hour or so here and there begging other players for gold. :P
bobbyd Nov 8th 2008 8:21PM
"Do you really want to be hanging out in the DK starting area listening to the ramblings of Dkpwnsu, Dethknyte and Arrrthess?"
I lol'd. how true it'll be.
Tanglebones Nov 8th 2008 8:40PM
How do you get off dragon?
UberGold Nov 8th 2008 9:08PM
Hahaha I love the suggestions. If you are trying to speed level, get a good guide, a friend, and a bit of knowledge.
I am sorry, but until you can do 1-70 in 3-4 days played - with little or no rested xp, then you shouldn't be giving advice. I suppose if we did it with rested xp, we could knock it down to 2-3 days, lol.
Best advice I will give you is if you are going to level, then level. If you want to play and enjoy the game, then enjoy it... and take all the other skills that slow you down.
Professional power levelers, level the skills AFTER they level the characters up. First aid, cooking, fishing, and everything else can wait till afterwards.
