Around Azeroth: We've got a world that swings
Come one, come all, to the Hellfire Peninsula carnival! See the fel orc with three heads! The incredible druid squirrel form! No? It's not a carnival? Then what is it? According to CB, this is what he sees whenever he plays WoW. "Blizzard has an issue with some high end Nvidia cards and they will not fix it so this is what I have to view when I play world of warcraft," he writes. He adds that other people have had this problem, that it seems to occur with certain patches, and that the only solution seems to be to buy a new graphics card. Personally, I prefer this view to the normal dullness of HFP, but I can see how multicolored cities would get tiring if you're not on LSD. Can anyone better-versed in computers than I am give CB some advice on what to do here?
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards.Filed under: Bugs, Screenshots, Around Azeroth, Galleries

The screen shots are user-submitted, so if anything, it is we that are out of ideas.
Get to it!

Whoa, stay off the FelWeed man...

I fix computers for a living, and I would recommend trying the following things, in this order:
1. Update video card drivers.
2. Update Windows through Windows Update.
3. Reinstall WoW.
4. Reinstall Windows.
Stop when you get it fixed.

I wouldn't let you fix my computer.
Chronnick Nov 10th 2008 10:37AM
So what do you recommend?
Link Death Nov 10th 2008 12:14PM
You forgot an even better idea: roll the video card drivers back to an older version.
Liel Nov 10th 2008 10:41AM
@Chronnick
I think the poster thought you meant try all those things in order ending with reinstalling Windows as in "why do all the things before that in the first place?"
I know you meant if all else fails reinstall Windows which I agree with. I don't do hardware support anymore but sometimes its not worth the time to do that much troubleshooting and just reinstall the OS.
Kaylad Nov 10th 2008 11:20AM
Windows tech support... retry, reboot, reinstall, reinstall another OS.

This kind of thing happens. Since it seems to be driver-related, try running backwards through the versions of drivers (assuming you have the latest one installed) until you find one that works correctly. Usually you will find a specific version that does not have the problem.
Note you may have to keep 2 sets of drivers around - one for Wow and one for anything else and switch back and forth.

Well exactly what high end Nvidia card is he using? Because I have a GeForce 9800GTX and it doesn't happen to me. Aint much higher than that.
Dukenukemx Nov 10th 2008 10:48AM
Anyone remember Quake Quack? There's a good chance Nvidia is doing the same thing with World of Warcraft.

I have a 9600GT and there were some problems during the PTR of 3.0.
I submitted a report and the problem isn't there in the Live one.
Most of the time I see these problems it seems to be from people with NVIDIA cards. Updating drivers never seems to work.
One thing I have seen that often fixes it is simply getting a more powerful PSU.

"I prefer this view to the normal dullness of HFP, but I can see how multicolored cities would get tiring if you're not on LSD."
- is this an admission that you play WoW solely when on LSD?
:P
CyberGrim Nov 10th 2008 10:57AM
I'm having the same driver issues, I have a 9400GT, I know it's not the best card out there, but sometimes the driver issue is so bad it forces a machine restart, which does affect gameplay.
Lowne Nov 10th 2008 11:20AM
This if for the person having the issue in the "Acid" screenie as well:
nVidia was (is) having issues with their cards not ramping up the fan speed to combat higher GPU temps. I thought it was only for the 8800 series cards but it might be for higher models as well.
To test this, download RivaTuner from:
http://www.guru3d.com/category/rivatuner/
Install it and find the tool that gives you a real time read out of your card stats. It will look like numerous graphs that are tracking your GPU and Memory temps, Fan speed and etc.
Start WoW and minimize it as soon as you're in the world with a character.
Compare the temperatures of your card components to your fan speed to see if the fan increases in RPMs to offset the rising temp. If it isn't doing this, you can then use RivaTuner to manually set your fan speed higher, create profiles to auto-increase the fan speed when specific .exe's are started and numerous other things that aren't really necessary in the context of this discussion.
Be careful with RivaTuner as it is quite a powerful tool and you can make things worse if you mess with the wrong area. The RivaTuner web site should have tutorials and advice sections on it to assist you.

That doesn't occur on the GTX 260.. And the only nvidia card above it is the 280....
I have a 9800gtx, bf has my old 8800 gts 640, and that doesn't happen on either of our comps...
That looks to me like his card is fried...
