Preparing for Wrath Day 3: PvP like there's no tomorrow

Unlike Badges of Justice which will only be legal tender for Level 70 item rewards, or Arena Points, which will be wiped clean the moment we ding 71, Honor will still be usable to purchase on-level rewards. Of course, we can expect inflation to apply -- a pair of Guardian bracers today cost 11,794 Honor and 20 Warsong Gulch Marks of Honor, but data suggests that the Deadly Gladiator bracers will cost 39,400 Honor and a 1660 personal Arena Rating. The Guardian belt and boots currently cost 17,850 Honor and 40 Eye of the Storm / Arathi Basin Marks of Honor, but looks like they'll cost 62,000 Honor and 1630 and 1720 personal Arena ratings respectively.
The current Honor cap is at 75,000, with each type of Mark of Honor capped at 100. This means that at the cost of the boots and belt, you'll only be able to purchase one piece when you hit Level 80 and play a few games through Season 5 when it starts on December 16. It's still not a bad deal if you've stored away all that Honor to begin with. And this is only if you choose to go for the best of the best... the Hateful and Savage Gladiator equivalents should be much more affordable. I wouldn't trust the current prices just yet -- anything can change once the PvP item vendor finally becomes accessible in Lake Wintergrasp. That said, any Honor you will have banked for Northrend will be a good investment.
Why is it a good idea to PvP now? Because once Wrath breaks, you'll be too busy leveling to do anything else. Since Blizzard estimates roughly a month for players hit Level 80, it means that there's little time to waste piddling about the Battlegrounds once Northrend opens. If there ever was a time to grind Honor, these past few weeks were it. If you're remotely interested in Arenas, hitting Level 80 by December 16 should be part of your Wrath plans.
Levels 71, 77, and 80
There are three key levels in Wrath of the Lich King for every PvP enthusiast. Level 71 is significant because it allows entry into the new Battleground, the Strand of the Ancients. It's highly likely that there will be few games played at that level and at an early stage, but if you want to scope the Battleground out and get some early Achievements, queueing up for it as soon as you've leveled up isn't such a bad idea. This works particularly well if you're already geared up in high end PvP gear. I mean, what else will we use Brutal Gladiator items for? They're a bit of overkill for those Vrykul in Grizzly Hills or Trolls in Zul'Drak. Level 71 also opens up the highest bracket of Alterac Valley, although options will be limited considering the Generals and Captains will be tuned for Level 80.
At Level 77, players will gain access to Cold-Weather Flying, which should open up Lake Wintergrasp, which is only accessible through flying mounts. If you want access to PvP gear early on, getting to Level 77 should be a key target since the PvP gear vendors can be found there. Getting to Lake Wintergrasp early should also help your faction take control of the zone, which in turn helps leveling even faster to 80.
When you finally get to Level 80, hopefully by December 16, you'll become eligible to play ranked Arena matches and qualify for the tiered Arena rewards. This will also open up a new bracket of Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm, Strand of the Ancients, and Warsong Gulch. It's also possible that the Honor cap will be raised at Level 80, considering Blizzard's original estimation for the Honor limit was roughly a few times as much as the most expensive Honor item. since Deadly Gladiator items will cost over 60,000 Honor, we might see an Honor cap raise. Blizzard stated that "the limit is subject to change depending on what works best for long-term game balance," so a limit raise shouldn't be unreasonable.
At Level 80, the Honor gains should be significantly higher, as well. This is in keeping with the trend of the game where it was always best to PvP at the highest level to get the best returns from Honor. Since Level 70 is only the highest level for a couple more days, it's best to squeeze it out now, so you can build on it later. So before Wrath come out, I hope I'll see you in the Battlegrounds!

Man - that gun to your head must have been chaffing.

He does make a good point about it being tired though. Battlegrounds are currently the equivalent of running Blackrock Depths for YEARS. In TBC we got... EotS, a lifeless BG that was much like a reworked AB. While I am quite impressed with the game blizzard has made, the fact that the BG system has been drifting aimlessly for so long, most people can't even remember when they were introduced is rather sad. Even more so now that they just want to push people into Arena.
I find it hard to believe that there seems to be a decent interest in PvP, yet Blizzard can't find the manpower to rework a battleground every year or so.

I think it does, Kolo. But from what I understand, most of it doesn't require you to be *good* at arena - you just have to do a few games.

To say that no AP (arena points, not rating) will be awarded tomorrow is false according to this post-

I'm still counting on getting a few hundred points tomorrow to purchase a non-rated piece of gear...

I have never been more bored then when I do arena matches. Sorry to everyone that loves them, but I find them wortheless. In fact they detract from my game.
On the other hand I love the BGs.
But if I am forced to go into arenas to get my BG rewards... Then I just wont do BGs. And if I am not doing BGs I have nothing to do in WoW when I only have a little time. (Which is most of my play time)..... So that means odds are I will hit 80, maybe run up a 2nd alt to 80. Then cancel my account.
And I know there are a LOT of people like me, sure probably not more then 10% of WoW players. But I think even Blizzard will take note when 1,100,000 x $14 stops coming in.

Wow never thought i would see negative responses on an article like this. I mean a lot of people in the game right now are logging in just to chat or not logging at all. At least someone is giving a good suggestion of what you can do with your time. I mean I have always been a PvE player, only PvP when boredom hits, but still this is exactly what I have been doing since i hit 70 on my 4th, and final paladin. (different servers, different friends, so i cant Xfer, and I have been playing a paladin since Launch of Vanilla WoW)

I too have ZERO desire to do Arenas (any form). And if I'm required to do arenas to get any chance at level 80 PvP gear, then you won't see me doing ANY PvP.
I'm not going to waste my time in BGs (which I enjoy greatly) just to be a chew toy for every arena-junkie out there who has level 80 PvP gear while I got zilch PvP gear. At least with the level 70 gear, I could eventually get half-decent PvP gear just by running BGs.
Which mostly means that once I hit 80, after raiding has lost its shine... there's a good chance that I'll end up moving on to another game.

I too have ZERO desire to do 25-man raids (any ones). And if I'm required to do 25-mans to get any chance at good level 80 PvE gear, then you won't see me doing ANY PvE.
I'm not going to waste my time in instances (which I enjoy greatly) just to be the lowest DPS among every raid-junkie out there who has level 80 PvE gear while I got zilch PvE gear. At least with the level 70 gear, I could eventually get half-decent PvE gear just by doing 5mans. (orly.)
...
I didn't intend this to be mocking, but just realise what flawed logic you have. You want to do BGs competitively? Do 10 games a week. Or an hour of playtime. Want to be top DPS/main-tank ? Spend 3-4 hours 3-4 days a week of playtime for that.
If you're gonna want to do some BGs in your spare time, and again I'll make the comparison, if you wanna do some 5-/10-mans on off-raid days, then you're gonna have to work for it. And the work required is much, much less for PvP than it is for PvE.
Also, only dead bosses drop loot. You can AFK in AV by /following somebody watching TV and repeat once you've rezzed.

Great post I'll have to keep those things in mind as I level through, Northrend.
If I do play some strand of the ancients games it'll only be for a short while. I don't want to get caught up and left behind. I do have some fairly high end gear, but I'd rather be there for 80 arenas instead of looking up on December 16th and saying "shit, I'm still level 71!"
sizzle Nov 10th 2008 6:13PM
For those saying that they don't want to do arenas to get PvP gear:
1. You don't need any arena rating to get the blue Savage arena gear.
2. The Savage gear is about 350 arena points for leg, chest, head. (A 1400 rating in 3v3 is 283)
3. You can join a losing team and just play the 30% or 3 games.
I know its not fun, but losing 3 or 4 arena games takes less then 10 minutes and still gives enough arena points for getting a new piece of arena gear every other week.
Yaimano Nov 10th 2008 6:47PM
I found this article very misleading. You made it sound like honor requirements have skyrocketed across the board, but you only gave examples of slots that don't need arena points in addition to purchase.
Looking at the latest figures, most slot equips (chest, shoulders, weapons etc) actually need LESS honor than they do now at 70. The new combined honor/AP requirement makes me think Bliz are actually toning down the honor grind, especially when you factor in the increased honor we'll get, so this article confuses me.
Savage Gladiator's Gavel 20k honor 575 ap, compared to 25.2k honor for the current s2.
Savage Gladiator's Barrier 12k honor 350 ap, compared to 15k honor for the current s2.
Khon Nov 10th 2008 10:38PM
When you're doing something you enjoy, its not a grind. I'd rather pay 27k honor than be forced into that rathole they call Arena, just so that I can get some gears to stay competitive in what I really enjoy, i.e. run BGs.
matt Nov 12th 2008 7:47AM
oh well thats it for me then... 62k honor just for bracers and belt I DONT THINK SO BLIZZ, i wont be spending months and months grinding rep for just an odd item or two.
No way, not a chance in hell ect ect. oh well time to ebay my account then, was getting bored of the ridiculous rep time sink and thats the final nail in the coffin for me.
