Rumor: Activision Blizzard paying mall costs for Gamestop midnight launches
When Gamestop first started taking pre-orders for Wrath of the Lich King, they told their customers that they would be open at midnight for the launch. About a month ago, however, the Gamestop stores in malls had to cancel their midnight launches. When I asked my local mall Gamestop employee while taking the mini-gamer trick or treating, I was told that the malls were charging too much to keep the doors open and that all Gamestop mall stores were canceling midnight launches. I informed my friends who had pre-ordered and they went to cancel their pre-orders only to be told that Activision was paying the mall costs and the midnight launches were back on schedule. When I called to confirm, I was told the same information but that the employee would not be quoted.
So I called Gamestop Corporate. The marketing department refused to comment saying that they would not release information about a publisher covering any costs for Gamestop. He was very irritated, to put it mildly.
Now, maybe I interrupted the representative's lunch and that's why he was annoyed. And obviously Gamestop employees were not authorized to tell customers that (and this is a direct quote from the employee who did not want to be identified) "Activision gave the OK." But if this is true, Activision Blizzard is willing to do whatever it takes to make Wrath available as many places as possible for the midnight launch event.
I also asked the local store if they would have extra Collector's Editions available. Unfortunately, this particular store will only be offering the regular editions for sale at midnight, though this may be up to the individual locations.

further proof that whoever runs Gamestop hates money, hates their customers, and absolutely should not be in the business of selling video games.
their attitudes towards things are mind-boggling at best.

I use to work for Gamestop. They are not so much an evil company as they are an incompetent one. But I hope they go under soon. They have no business being in the retail gaming industry. Try asking for a PC game, and they refer you to console games. Try to ask for a popular game guide, and they give you the "Hello Kitty Adventure Island, in LEGO" guide.
Gamestop, please go under and never rise again!

The reason Gamestop does so well is because they're in the business of making money. Not pleasing gamers or catering to a niche crowd of them. There is a reason they put all of their competition out of business.
Pro Tip: It wasn't by paying more money to keep their stores open until midnight then they would make from the game sale.

I hate to say it but I bought my pre-order from them.. I felt so ashamed because gamestop is evil incarnate but they were the only ones doing both pre-orders and midnight release

" I felt so ashamed because gamestop is evil incarnate"
Really? A bit of hyperbole perhaps? Its one thing to say you don't agree with someones sales policies or you think their customer service could be better. You might even have a point if you say they prey upon naive customers.
But evil incarnate? Hmm ... I might put Hitler there, but Gamestop? Hardly. They are just another company. Nothing evil about them. Nothing special either.

God. Gamestop again. I absolutely hate this shop.
Know why?
A little serious called "Zero Originality" will reveal all of Gamestop's dirty little secrets. Check it out if you want.

Those videos actually converted me from avid Gamestop fanboy to the guy who tells all his friends about their scams.
Also, they're freeking hystarical.

Can I get a working "Zero Originality" link guys? I can't find this on the tubes - mostly taken down.

It irks me that the Escapist and Gamestop tried to have these videos taken down.
It was technically fine for Gamestop to have them taken down, as they showed a support line's number PLUS used their copyrighted name.
However, for the Escapist, the actual people who took it down, it really was junk. It was clear parody.
Gah, I hate these sort of stunts.

This worries me. Although I did not reserve my WotLK CE at a Mall Game Stop the way they handle these things sometimes concerns me. I don't want to wait in line at midnight only to be told that no CE's were shipped to that store. I do hope that all who did reserve at a Mall get a chance to grab their copy (normal or CE) at Midnight like everyone else.

Working nights at a bakery in Australia means I get home from work in time for the American evenings. This means I get to play with my Yankee cousins (NB. I don't care if your from the south) but this also means that the midnight launch at my local EB Games is happening just before I go to work! I hope it will be all install by the time I get home.
I also secured a collectors edition so I'll be set.

Interesting.

This mirrors what I found out when I called - our local Gamestop store in Honolulu was ordered by the mall to NOT do midnight openings - however, the rep also said that a Blizzard rep had come in a few days before and apparently paid whatever costs were required to have a midnight opening for the store, so...midnight opening ahoy!

Wait... Honolulu? I reserved mine at Gamestop at Windward Mall in Kaneohe. Are they having a midnight launch too?

Funny seeing Hawaii comments!
Hubby works at Gamestop, and is scheduled for midnight at Queen Kaahumanu. Of course, it's not like open-air malls have the same "closing time" issues as regular malls do.

Woohoo Hawaii!! I'm going to the Ala Moana to get mine too! probably not midnight release, but eventually there...
Angry Joe Nov 11th 2008 12:18AM
Hey, I wanna live in Hawaii too!

Well from a image standpoint I can see the Gamestop point of view, not wanting to release information regarding A/B [Activision/Blizzard - as I like to call it] paying for operating costs.
I can also see from a marketing / consumer's point of view [I am one, in fact] and if I cannot be convinced of a midnight release, I will be taking my business elsewhere. Seems a bit too "on the fence" for my taste. First they are not open at midnight, then they are BUT with no apparent satisfactory explaination.
Get it together Gamestop!
