Wrath 101: How to get to Northrend and where to go once you get there

For Alliance, head to the northernmost dock at Stormwind Harbor to get to Borean Tundra or take the boat out of Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands to be dropped off in Howling Fjord.
For Horde, the zeppelin in Ogrimmar leads to Borean Tundra and the zeppelin out of Undercity will take you to Howling Fjord.
Consider camping out your character at one of these spots the night before launch so you can head right over as soon as you have the expansion loaded on your system.
I'm in Borean Tundra and my buddy is in Howling Fjord. How do I get to him?
It will take you some time grab the many flight points that connect these two zones. In the meantime, there is a series of three Tuskarr villages along the coast line that will offer you rides between them via giant sea turtles. You can take them all the way from BorTun to HF or vice versa. Just head to up the coast until you find a dock with a walrus guy. There is a stopover in Dragonblight. A more extensive explanation with pictures and coordinates will be posted here tomorrow.
Where are the new instances I can play immediately?
In Borean Tundra, the 5-man instance is The Nexus. To get there, head to Amber Ledge. It's a mage tower on a hill overlooking the ocean to the west. To get there head north/north-east from Warsong Hold (H) or north west out of Valiance Keep (A).
Once there, take a dragon flight to Coldarra (the icy island to the west) where you land in a mage-created settlement called the Transitus Shield. Take the road north east out of TS to an icy cave, but beware aggro mobs along once outside the shields. Once inside the cave, head to the bottom to enter The Nexus.
In Howling Fjord, you are looking for Utgarde Keep. This is very simple for Alliance, simply head north out of Valgarde keep to the other side of the Vrykul viking settlement. You will see a large stairwell set into the cliff face. Run up it and into the instance. For Horde, head west out of Vengeance Landing and up the lift. From there, follow the road straight west into the instance.
Where's the new Shattrath?
That would be Dalaran. Both Horde and Alliance can use the amenities this neutral city offers. Like Shattrath, there will be no class trainers or Auction House, but there will be Grand Master profession trainers and one-way portals to all the major cities in Azeroth (including one to Shattrath.) There will be mage portal trainers which will come in handy since you can't get to Dalaran before level 74 unless you use a Mage portal. Without a portal, you'll have to wait until level 74. At that point, you can get a quest that will allow you to use a crystal on the floor of the Crystalsong Forest that will take you to the floating city. Once there, bind immediately.
When can I use my flying mount?
Level 77. It used to be a quest, now it's just trainable in Dalaran. For 1,000g (950g with Dalarn faction.) Look on the bright side, no more turtle boats.
Anything else you want to know about to get started on Thursday (that we haven't covered in Ask A Beta Tester or our recent Preparing for Wrath series)?

After Wrath is installed, are there any known patches to download/install? If so, can they be downloaded somewhere in advance? Once I install the exp pack, I don't want to wait x number of minutes/hours to pull down a patch...
Thanks!
Draim Nov 10th 2008 10:20AM
the game will have to reinstall the patches that have been installed recently (3.0.2 and 3.0.3) you should already have them downloaded but there are mirrors around (and a post here with a couple of them a couple days ago) if you want to be sure. There hasn't been any sign of ANOTHER patch that would be incoming, and if there is we wouldn't be able to download it in advance unless they released it in advance (which they would likely do so that they don't stress downloads).

Once you have the in-between flight points you CAN fly from Borean Tundra and Howling Tundra, so one of the first thing I did in Beta was to run and boat to get them. No deaths at all, and well worth it.

So which starting zone is better? Or will we have to go to BOTH of them eventually anyway?
Muse Nov 10th 2008 12:18PM
Purely a matter of personal preference. The only reason to go to both is to pick up the quests for the instances. (very short chain in HW, slightly longer in BT)
tayluca Nov 10th 2008 10:16AM
"There is no direct boat ride, zepplin or flight point between the two starting zones. "
Each Tuskarr village has a flight path. Grab the flight paths located at each village the first time you take the boats so that the next time you need to go from one starter zone to the next, you can just hop the gryphon.

ZOMG this is the most important question ever asked;

dtesoro Nov 10th 2008 10:29AM
which starting location would be reccomended for a horde prot warr?
Raaj Nov 10th 2008 12:04PM
Assuming you're on a PvP server, the one with less S4 geared alliance in it.
Bootsanator Nov 10th 2008 11:04AM
I've been trying to find a Flight Path map for Horde in Northrend, but with no success.
The page is updated on wowwiki for Alliance:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Flight_path/Northrend
but not for Horde.
Anyone who knows the horde flight paths and feels like typing it up in wowwiki will make me happy :)
I'm guessing that half of the FP's are neutral, so you can just copy/paste the alliance part to begin, just don't leave in any bogus FP's, hehe, thanks in advance to whoever.

Hmm, I know of this thing that you get when you create a character and you can use when you talk to inn keepers... I don't know... a Hearthstone????

Some clarification on Theramore Isle:
It seems that there will be a bright, shiny passenger train piloted by Elvis that will magically fly directly into Dalaran. While on board, you will have the chance to smoke a little Fel Lotus with Thrall while engaging in a philisophical discussion about AJAX!
Seriously, got there! Camp it! If it doesn't show up right away it's probably just lag!
Kanuris Nov 10th 2008 11:36AM
Hoping on the Menethil Harbour/Theramore Boatwagon.

I just LOVE how people act surprised and get all self righteous when someone says they take time off work for stuff like Wrath release.
How dense are you??? Of coarse I'm taking two days off!!!
I don't work at a coal mine. I went to college so I could get a good job that gives paid time off noob. I have like 2 weeks saved up so why the #$%^ wouldn't I use a measly 2 days to just veg out and enjoy the game?
As if I could really afford to take a 3 week vacation every year. 90% of my vacation time is just used for personal veg days when I just want to take a day to chill out. Vacation does not have to include going somewhere.
Get over it noobs.
Zamboni Nov 10th 2008 3:07PM
I still have "personal days" to burn off before the end of the year or I lose them, so making this a 4-day WoW Weekend is probably the best (and cheapest) way to use them up. Work can get along without me for a couple of days.
Eraj Nov 10th 2008 12:22PM
Oh hai I don't know if like 50 people said this yet (Who reads the comments before they post one anyways?), but the boat isn't in theramore, it's in menethil.
XvampyrexrisingX Nov 10th 2008 1:25PM
I'm not entirely sure if this question fits in here, but oh well:
Is Dalaran going to be as laggy as Shattrath?
I used to laugh at my friend, whose computer was slower than mine and could barely support Shat, and now I'm crawling from Scryers tier to the portals with ~1 frame per second and latency off the charts.
I wasn't sure if the new graphics engine for Wrath and all of that would make Dalaran livable, so I figured I'd ask~
Balius Nov 10th 2008 1:51PM
Number of people creates lag. Each player has to deal with data from every other player, so with each additional player in the area the drain on your system increases exponentially, a problem only compounded by increased load on Blizzard's servers from each of those players sending and receiving so much.
That's why BRK's million Tauren march got a firm request to stop, and why their server crashed. Data overload.
There are solutions to the problem that could be implemented, but none of them are any better than the severe lag.
