Servers back down: Mailboxes empty [Updated x2]
The realms were briefly up this afternoon. Anyone who logged into them was greeted with everything working smoothly – except for their mailbox. Many people found that they did not have the mail that was previously stored in their mailbox prior to the reset.
This is, of course, a big deal for bank alts and others who send tens of thousands of gold through the system. Blizzard has shut down the realms again, and is aware of the problem.
Update at 3:35pm: Syndri tells us that they are actively looking for a fix, and that as of yet none has been found. See our realm status post for more information about the extended downtime.
Update at 10:34pm: Mail will be reimbursed. More information.
We here at WoW Insider would like to encourage Blizzard to just fix it!
Stay tuned for more updates.
Updated 2:32pm: Syndri commented: ""...we are able to view many of the missing mail articles within players' inventories. Though this is promising, we've still neither ETA nor confirmed resolution available."
Updated 3:11pm: Syndri now comments: "This issue remains a priority for our technicians, database administrators, and in-game staff at this time. We've no ETA available, though work is hard underway. As a result of these efforts, we are continuing maintenance on all realms. Though we are loathe to limit your available game time, we also want to ensure that this issue is addressed to the fullest extent possible. Thank you all for your continued feedback and responses. As more information becomes available, I will provide it herein."

No need to fear, MEGORANOS IS HERE!
erm.. so yeah... does this happen often? I've only been playing this game for 6 months.. do they give out compensation for time we lose? For a problem they are having?

This isn't exactly "normal", though Tuesday maintenance and the occaisional extended maintenance is to be expected. The servers have actually been running especially well for the last year or so, to the extent that they were able to shift from weekly to biweekly maintenance for a while.
However, since the release of the patch 3.0.2, which synchronized the game with the expansion, they have encountered a number of problems resulting in unscheduled downtime and almost daily rolling restarts. Not only was it the largest content patch in about two years, it's also resulted in many more people playing than usual, what with the holiday, world events, and achievements.
In short, they're working overtime to make sure everything is in working order before Thursday, lest Wrath be released and cause the game to completely break.
They've already credited all subscribers with 72 hours (3 days) of free game time to compensate for unscheduled downtime, and if neccesary, more compensation may be given.

Man...and I was so close to having an early Romantic Picnic Basket and leftover Tricky Treats all set for my Death Knight too!
TiM Nov 11th 2008 2:43PM
Sigh. Well I'm glad i don't keep my gold in the mail, ya know, except for that 30k i lost today>.>

I don't have much faith in Blizz right now. It seems that patch 3.x was not ready and they have rushed into getting it out. I criticized AoC for the same reason and feel like a fool for saying Blizz was better are ensuring they have a stable product before release.
I miss the old Blizz.....
Sayce Nov 11th 2008 4:10PM
They're bringing a MASSIVE new portion to their game... it's the same as.... say... adding 33% more infrastructure to New York City.... when you just plop this whole new part of the world into the existing world, you're going to have unforseen issues. Blizz does a good job of making our game work better than any other MMO. If another MMO patches better.... well good for them... but they aren't adding the same kind or amount of new content, nor is it being used by even a tenth as many people.
A little patience and faith is called for.... if Blizzard truly let you down, why are you still playing?
Bridger77 Nov 11th 2008 2:47PM
Look past the mail! It's just a distraction so we don't notice them hotfixing the pallies yet again.... We also didn't go to Outland. It was all faked on a movie lot....

blazewan Nov 11th 2008 3:38PM

joggoms Nov 11th 2008 2:45PM
These last few weeks have been quite sad. Blizzard is running out of time to break the game.
Who thinks we'll actually be able to *play* Wrath this weekend?
blazewan Nov 11th 2008 3:38PM
i do, but i'm also not a melodramatic drama queen so that might account for my optimism
skelafeti Nov 11th 2008 2:48PM
I'm wondering the same thing a poster stated on page 1. How can something like mail that has been working since day 1 and should be one of the more stable things in the game all of a sudden break during a routine maintenance?
Why are they doing this today and not tomorrow or Thursday am when the servers are going to be down anyway ?
So ok no game time today for 8+hours and if past history is any indication no game time for quite a few hours on Thursday either like all the past patches and TBC release..
ryan Nov 11th 2008 2:51PM
I had huge lag spike Right before it shut down, like 5 mins before.
Tophy Nov 11th 2008 2:53PM
Of course many people have today off from work, school, etc.....and we can't play. Not only is the maintenance extended, but now its even extended FURTHER, with not even a reasonable guess at when we will be able to play. Could be an hour, could be 3 hours. I can't wait until this expansion just comes out and we can get through all this crap. I miss the days of simple rolling restarts on Tuesdays every other week. Lately its been 6-8 hour maintenance every week, and often problems arise afterward that extend it even further. I understand the issues that must come up with such a giant player base and an impending expansion. I'm just waiting for a couple weeks after the expansion goes live, because hopefully by then some of these weekly problems will be resolved and we can get back to a normal schedule.
Amaxe Nov 11th 2008 2:53PM
I might be affected by some auctions not getting to me, but I tried to clear my boxes daily, so hopefully the hit will not be too bad.
