Weigh in on the downtime debacle
It is no secret that servers have been seeing an awful lot of maintenance lately, and today has been the worst. While the blues have been encouraging and supportive, the frustration has been mounting, and many players are threatening to call it quits.
Of course, players threaten this on a daily basis, so it comes as no shock.
The responses on the forums, when they are available, on our own site, and in our team mail have made the WoW Insider team somewhat curious. How are you feeling about Blizzard today?

Agreed. I'd rather have the servers be down right up until Wrath officially begins, so they work out all the kinks and fix these things now, than have it hit the fan server-wise, on top of the flood we can expect.
Go go Blizz-team, away!

Realms actually ARE really complex.
I'm actually surprised they caught that Mail bug so fast.
At least we know that Blizzard is constantly looking/fixing things that aren't working properly (Excluding class balance of course because every class is OP and every class sucks)

I'm a systems administrator with some experience supporting complex online apps, and I'm consistently impressed that World of Warcraft works as well as it does. Even the best system will occasionally fail. Yeah, it sucks that WoW was down today, but in the grand scheme of things it's about an 0.1 out of 10 in importance.
Class balance, on the other hand -- now that's hard. The only way to make two sides in a game totally balanced is to make them exactly the same (such as in chess -- and even there the fact that White moves first puts Black at a significant disadvantage at master-level play). Personally I would rather have ten interesting, diverse, somewhat-imbalanced classes than ten perfectly balanced ones that were basically clones of each other.

Yes, I agree with you completely on the class balance. I was being sarcastic : /

Starting to see a few realms up now.
romiress Nov 11th 2008 11:46PM
Yes, there's a few coming up.
romiress Nov 11th 2008 11:45PM
People need to calm down. As a person who's studying computer science... Yah, the fact that this sort of major mess up doesn't happen weekly with more then 250 realms... It's an accomplishment in itself.
inigmi Nov 11th 2008 11:50PM
This is the most realistic comment I've seen in months on WoWInsider. Anyone who is seriously complaining about what's going on is completely ignorant. The fact of the matter is that the amount of the stability that Blizzard *has* maintained is just amazing. Kudos to them.
slimj091 Nov 11th 2008 11:51PM
thing is.. lately it has been happening weekly. and in some cases, Daily.
romiress Nov 11th 2008 11:53PM
:) Try playing another game.
Dofus, for example. Dofus has, at most, 2 million people playing, and that's probably FAR over the number of subscribed accounts. (That's probably counting dead accounts, too)
Every other day is some issue. In one case, imagine that battlegrounds were there... but you couldn't pick up flags or capture goals. For two weeks before it was fixed.
I'd rather have matinance go long then deal with issues like that.
DeadNite Nov 12th 2008 12:07AM
Yea, stuff does happen. I agree, would rather them fix everything they can pre xpac then after the fact. I, for one, wouldn't mind at all if they pulled the realms for a few days before the xpac. Just so they can have all the time in the world to squash the bugs.

As a former student and college graduate in Computer Science I can tell you that customers always have the right to complain when a company does not follow through on their word.
The problem here isn't mainly the downtime, it's the lack of reliable information and communication regarding it.
Avery Nov 12th 2008 1:01AM
I have to agree. I did tech support for a major college for three years. As a manager I remember having to get calls every other night (waking me up at 3am no less) telling me that something, somewhere on campus went down. This was only for a campus housing 20,000 students (not including faculty and staff). While there have been multiple bugs and downtime in WoW's history, I'm still impressed with how well it has held up, especially with over 11 million players (isn't that what we're up to now?).
Personally, I'd rather them sort this type of crap out BEFORE Wrath hits rather than later.
Talfrey Nov 11th 2008 11:45PM
With the amount of problems WoW has right now, I'm wondering if maybe a month or two before I come and join the fun in Northrend wouldn't be prudent.
Emmure Nov 11th 2008 11:45PM
I was debating about lining up at 12:00 tomorrow, but what's the point. It's not like I'm going to be able to play at 12:00 anyways.
Templar Nov 11th 2008 11:47PM
Mildly annoyed, but honestly would prefer that they were ready for the release and it go smoothly.
And as of a minute or two ago, realms are SLOWLY coming up it appears.
Sikachi Nov 11th 2008 11:45PM
lol. I wasn't even aware that a lot of stuff has gone down. Really, not that upset. I'm saving my energy for the Wrath launch and really haven't tried getting on today. My advice is just to relax and take time to do something. Don't wanna WoW yourself this close to the launch =P
Nethos Nov 11th 2008 11:46PM
I just renew my account today!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr...
Imma gonna Rain of Embers spam bliz hq
lotofsnow Nov 11th 2008 11:46PM
Meh. This is what I've come to expect. Server issues haven't been the reason I've quit WoW like 5 times previously. Why start now?
Stuart Nov 11th 2008 11:46PM
They need to, at the very least, reimburse us with an extra day of warcraft on our billing plans.
