All Blizzard forums are again locked

They've done this so the community manager can communicate with the community better. They need to get information out quickly, and cannot have the forum system overloaded and explode as it did last night.
This is not the first time we've seen them lock the forums in the past twenty four hours, although I do hope it is the last time.
On a brighter side of things, our comments are not locked! And we don't really subscribe to the 1984 doctrine. Newspeak here I come!

Anyone know what the level 80 avatars look like on the official forums?
Lainie Nov 12th 2008 4:32PM
They all look like zombies. The zombies invaded the forums & crashed them. =)

Eff the forums if the realms stay up....which I suspect won't over the course of the next 24 hours or so.

I do not get why they just do not increase the time limit from 10 minutes to like 30 minutes or higher for being allowed to post.
That would allow folks to at least post but curb the spammers and instigators.

I'm at work and can't view the forums anyway...
Can anyone fill me in on what's going on? Is the mail fixed? Are the servers back up? Did they fix the free PvP gear issue?
Thanks

They should use the freaking homepage worldofwarcraft.com
Everyday I feel stupid for having the rss, nothing important gets posted.
Sometimes i miss http://www.camelotherald.com

I'm here to remind you of my thead from last year that was replied to by Blue as well as WoW insider - http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=6286802685&pageNo=1&sid=1
Look forward to new T7... and then never having it updated again till the next expansion.

I defended Blizz in the forums yesterday. As far as their IT goes, i'm sure they worked very hard to get things back up, however, the fact that blizzard is being so heavy handed with the forums leads me to think that they just can't handle the heat from their oops.
They screwed up. No mention so far of a extra day of play for folks as far as I can tell. People are still waiting to get the mail back and with wrath coming in just hours what is next?
I know how hard it is when something goes wrong and people yell and scream and complain. But I think folks are justified and I think that if they can't handle the traffic they need to add a server or two. 10 million x 15 i think they can afford a couple more servers so people can be on the forums and on the website. Plus if they were more forthcoming with info and kept updates happening I think it would have been a lot better.

I dunno -- i saw three days of playtime credited to my account when I looked this morning. (I was trying to figure out when I needed a new game card)

the server clusters that make up a realm cost a fortune to buy and maintain, espically when you can just add some blade servers to the existing realms
Alan Nov 12th 2008 3:04PM
I really don't think it's all that simple. Their website gets completely destroyed everytime thei realms go down, and it's not fair to just say "get more web servers." 99% of the time they have one level of traffic, and when the realms go down that amount probably multiplies by 100.
This just looks like a move to keep the website up, which is welcome in my book. They look silly everytime the website goes down along with the realms, not to mention they completely lose their web presence for potential customers. At least with the forums closed, the website won't get pounded as badly and we might actually get to check the realm status page in less than fifteen reloads.

heavyhanded?
cant handle the heat?
Wow, they get crapped on by so many people when they don't screw up. Give these guys a break.
And as for productive use of the forums, the only thing I have ever seen on the forums is diarrhea of the mouth. Personally, I wish they would perma ban people for one damn troll post. Might piss off alot of 12 year olds, but oh well.

It would be great they give an update about the items that was lost in the mail. Yay! they fixed the pvp glitch, now fix the stupid mailbox fiasco.

Correction: The US forums are locked. The EU ones are business as usual.
Lemons Nov 12th 2008 2:52PM
forums can be used productively? bwha?
Kaelistes Nov 12th 2008 2:52PM
I dont see this as a huge deal, and if it means that everyone has access to the information they are trying to get to us right away I am for it. wow insider has contacts at blizz so they can get the info if it is needed. I for one only kept track of the outage from this site last night, and it was just as effective. Thank you wow insider!

I think the biggest issue with the problems over the last couple days will be a human one.
Blizzard only has so many server gnomes, troubleshooters, etc...I imagine a lot of folks who were supposed to be resting up for the launch were called into action to fix things over the last couple of days.
I imagine Blizzard is heading into Wrath a little less rested, and a little less fresh and focused as they would like to be.
