Blizzard sends in-game mail explaining today's problems
Blizzard has sent an in-game mail to everyone explaining what went wrong with the mail system, and what will be happening to fix it.In other news, the world blew up from all the irony. The mice have quickly begun repairing the world, and hope to have a new one constructed shortly.
Basically the mail is outlining what Zarhym told us all earlier: that they will be reimbursing the items and gold lost during today's in-game mail failure, or mailure as I've started to call it tonight.
Full text of the in-game mail after the break, or you can just look at a large screenshot of the message.
Full text of the in-game mail:
Greetings,
An error occurred in maintenance today that is preventing players from retrieving in-game mail.
A fix that will allow players to retrieve items and gold will be implemented over the next few days. Please do not create an in-game ticket or contact phone support for this issue. Multiple mails will be sent returning your items and gold automatically. Further information will be posted on the official World of Warcraft forums.

Was it really necessary for us to read that garbage? Most of it was swears and complaints which fouls the mood. If you're going to raise issues about the community, I would think you'd either be an outstanding member or include yourself into this equation. Any MMO you join with that attitude is probably gonna get hampered in some form which might seem small but will be more damaging depending on how small the community itself is.

So all that downtime and they couldn't even fix it?
What they really mean is, 'you aren't getting your mail and we hope you will forget about it in a few days when you are busy with WoTLK'.

Bunnnnnnnnnng!
Raegn Nov 12th 2008 12:04AM
Let's just hope they actually return everything.
And wonderous server restart. I was on for less than five minutes and azeroth crashed.

Possibly because all the people, still Irate, are piling on heavily onto the ONLY available servers before they're at full capacity yet? There's a warm-up period of ten minutes or so which allows for enough exploits already.

Deadlock ?
Why do I feel we are running in circles here ?

So they kept servers down all because people couldn't get their mail? I'm sure we could have enjoyed our last day in TBC while they resolved the problem....
Flairy Nov 12th 2008 12:17AM
Hi. I'm no wow expert, but I'm pretty sure TOMORROW is the last day of TBC. :)
Leowyn Nov 12th 2008 12:20AM
Yes, they had to keep the servers down to address the issue. They either had to re-import a backup of the SQL database, or restore a copy of the SQL database for mail and re-import that database to send all of the missing mail back to people. There is no way they could have done this while allowing people to play. It really is sad how little people that use a computer know about managing a network, let alone a full fledged major server like this. I could care less if the server was down for a day, oh no. The last time I can remember it being down this long was shortly after launch, maybe I missed some time in between when there were issues, but seriously, the size of these servers, its amazing how little it happens.

Well that's the problem right there. Their using SQL.
Informix ftw.
Galilyse Nov 12th 2008 12:07AM
Well, can't wait to get my stuff in the mail. And the realms have started to come back online too- better late than never!

Does anyone know about mail that was OLDER then 15 days?
The blue post mentioned specifically the last 15 days of mail would be restored.
The in-game mail doesn't mention 15 days.
What will happen to mail from 16-29 days old ?
SeiferTim Nov 12th 2008 12:11AM
Dun dun duuuuuuuuun!
Cephas Nov 12th 2008 12:14AM
I believe that mail older than 15 days was unaffected and should still be in the mailbox.
aethena Nov 12th 2008 1:38AM
I had a fair bit of mail older than 15 days. I just opened my mailbox and... it's all gone. The mailbox is empty except for the Customer Support message from Blizzard.

My UI is totally kablam.
The Character, Quest, etc... bars on the bottom... are in the middle of my screen. I can't move Arkinventory, or turn it off. I can't see my normal action bar, but I can see my side action bar.
