Bug rewards free and discounted PvP gear [UPDATED]
The mail debacle isn't the only strange thing coming out of today's maintenance. PvP armor, both honor gear and arena gear, have had their prices all screwed up.- Select Season 4 weapons have had their rating requirements removed.
- Select Season 2 weapons have found themselves bearing rating requirements they didn't previously have.
- Warlocks and Priests can purchase full sets of Season 2 gear at absolutely no cost whatsoever.
- Select Season 4 accessories can be acquired at no cost.
- The Brutal Gladiator's Hatchet is completely free as well.
Those are only the things we know of right now, the problem may even go farther than that. I've checked the Tiers 4, 5 and 6 vendors with a few friends of various classes and haven't run into any oddities there yet. It seems exclusive to PvP gear.
Before you get excited and run off to buy some gear, please keep in mind that while this is a bug, that could be considered an exploit. A bug isn't your fault but when you knowingly abuse it, it quickly becomes your problem. That being said, I don't think Blizzard will be banning any accounts over this, either. I would just recommend being careful and not abusing this.
I fully expect server restarts by morning to correct this issue, because it's kind of a big deal. Then again, we're going to be in Northrend tomorrow evening and this gear will quickly be replaced. Maybe they won't bother, but I sort of have my doubts. If you see something about a server shutdown or restart in the next few hours, this would be why.
2:20 am: Blizzard has added a message to the login screen mentioning that they are aware of the issue, and asking us to avoid purchasing these items.

I got all of my Glad gear for my priest and rings and neck piece for everyone else that could get them
OhYeaBaby Nov 12th 2008 11:23AM
HAHAHA --
Guess you should have not taken it and put gems in it.
I sure hope they have a way to figure out who actually purchased it and had it vs those who took it...
I'll find out when I login sometime next month when it is up and running again.
Ozweepay Nov 12th 2008 11:32AM
They said they will remove ALL gear purchased last night, and refund marks, honor, and arena points appropriately.
What if you purchased something using the correct price (as I did) and then gemmed/enchanted it? I'll get my arena points back but lose the gems and enchants?
I'm sure the ppl at Blizz are embarrassed, stressed out, and haven't slept in over 24 hrs. It's very very expensive for them to give free days in return for downtime.
Ninjox Nov 12th 2008 11:39AM
ABOUT TIME THEY'RE COMING UP SLOWLY PEEPS! sorry bout caps but I feel they were needed.
rivlak Nov 12th 2008 12:00PM
Are they giving us free playtime for the time there services were down?
raistlinx Nov 12th 2008 11:42AM
I understand downtime will happen when issues arise and I can live with that no prob. But what really gets me mad is what Blizz says they will provide an update within the hour and then doesn't.
Even if it is bad news, if you say you are going to do something then do it.

Caps locks.
Unleash that rage!
Rivlak Nov 12th 2008 11:56AM
Keep us updated on when the realms will be up again, and P.S you didn't lose any of your rep! We all still love you!
OhYeaBaby Nov 12th 2008 12:04PM
Someone let me know if you purchase your gear *before* last nights disaster of free looting and let me know if you still have it.
I would hate to login and find myself naked.
I've been grinding in the BG's for months to get my gear and would hate to see myself well, running around in my undies -- although I do have a hot body so i'm nice to look at.
skcmz628 Nov 12th 2008 1:07PM
Ahh man - I think I'm having fun and everything's okay and then I realize that it's NOT and I shouldn't have been having fun.
*sighs and cries*
Lady Sith Nov 12th 2008 6:07PM
OK... i've logged in and saw that all my free epics are gone.
*sobs*
Nooooooo!!!!!!
They should have allowed us to keep it to compensate for the number of times the server have been down for maintenance/reset etc.
Agent_Smith Nov 12th 2008 4:42PM
They're not banning anyone they just took all the free stuff away. None of my characters have any of the bugged stuff as of 12PM PST. Blackrock server.
A friend of mine got his free stuff pull a couple of hours before that. I'm still at work so I don't know if they rolled back the servers or if they just removed the bugged items...
tagashi Nov 18th 2008 1:23AM
Look, you all know that you shouldn't be taking the gear. Anyone who does, deserves some sort of punishment. Many of us had to put in a lot of time to get the gear we had, and it sucks seeing some noob exploit a bug (especially after it was announced in trade channel as being a bug) to get crappy s2 gear that you actually put time in to earning. Realize that this is a competitive game. 1 person getting gear they don't deserve does have an effect on the other players.
So quit making excuses for the bug exploiters. 99.9% of them knew they were exploiting a bug when they did it. After blizz takes the gear back, they should strip honor and marks as punishment.

Well, as of 1900 CST, 2 of my 3 70s who "looted" during the Great Orgrimmar Epix Riot of 2008:
Priest: all 5 pieces of S2 ("Merciless Satin..."), AND Guardian's Pendant of Subjugation: ALL GONE. (Sob!)
Ele shammy: didn't get nearly as much (S2 caster helm, rings, necklace): ALL GONE. (Easy come, easy go)
Hunter: The only thing that was free was the Brutal Gladiator's Hatchet. And I still had it. O_o
I think I'll throw it away. I didn't earn it (as many hysterical observers pointed out). I don't think I'd use it (no suitable mainhand, and I'm Marksman anyways).
