Bug rewards free and discounted PvP gear [UPDATED]
The mail debacle isn't the only strange thing coming out of today's maintenance. PvP armor, both honor gear and arena gear, have had their prices all screwed up.- Select Season 4 weapons have had their rating requirements removed.
- Select Season 2 weapons have found themselves bearing rating requirements they didn't previously have.
- Warlocks and Priests can purchase full sets of Season 2 gear at absolutely no cost whatsoever.
- Select Season 4 accessories can be acquired at no cost.
- The Brutal Gladiator's Hatchet is completely free as well.
Those are only the things we know of right now, the problem may even go farther than that. I've checked the Tiers 4, 5 and 6 vendors with a few friends of various classes and haven't run into any oddities there yet. It seems exclusive to PvP gear.
Before you get excited and run off to buy some gear, please keep in mind that while this is a bug, that could be considered an exploit. A bug isn't your fault but when you knowingly abuse it, it quickly becomes your problem. That being said, I don't think Blizzard will be banning any accounts over this, either. I would just recommend being careful and not abusing this.
I fully expect server restarts by morning to correct this issue, because it's kind of a big deal. Then again, we're going to be in Northrend tomorrow evening and this gear will quickly be replaced. Maybe they won't bother, but I sort of have my doubts. If you see something about a server shutdown or restart in the next few hours, this would be why.
2:20 am: Blizzard has added a message to the login screen mentioning that they are aware of the issue, and asking us to avoid purchasing these items.

How does something like this even happen? It seems... such a random bug to occur. Were they editing code for priest gear and forgot to use a or something?
Anyway, is this the sort of thing Blizzard rolls back servers for?

Really, it's sad seeing the knee-jerk apologists defending Blizz on this one. Bad enough that this problem was spotted on the PTR and never fixed, but even worse is imagining how it came into being. Goofing around? Sabotage? Why would the system even allow a no-price item to slide into place without automatically reporting an error?
Just try to imagine a headlight engineer for the Corvette being allowed to reset the MSRP on a Cadillac to zero. Think that could happen? No. Why? Because they there are too many checks in place, checks which apparently do not exist at Blizz.

Another server object probably had that particular gear as a dependency, and no one thought to check old gear when testing new stuff or the new change. It happens more than you think. I think that instead of being angry (I address everyone else, not you :-), we should be impressed that such a huge game has so few server shut down issues. I can't even imagine the pressure that their developers and QA team are under right now...
God speed, Blizzard. :-)

Almost all arena items now have a rating. Therefore, if you did arena this last week to get one last item before wrath, you're screwed.

Escape your SQL queries! lol

Sen'Jin is also still down, among many others. Blizzard really better pickup the slack if they expect a smooth Wrath launch... it's not looking so good right about now.
Benji Nov 12th 2008 1:09AM
Blizz will probably remove any items you get through this exploit.
Tcgjarhead Nov 12th 2008 1:09AM
I hope that the people who exploit this bug get atleast a 3 day ban for abusing it, missing the WotLK launch.
But thats just me.
ckluv76 Nov 12th 2008 2:14AM
there are thousands, if not millions who are "exploiting" this. i doubt they will ban or suspend us.
this is THEIR error, not ours.
they will probably just remove whatever items we were able to get.
Osi Nov 12th 2008 1:10AM
Not an exploit. ... sheesh, dictionary, thanks!
Anyways, Blizz removed the notes on login. Yet not all servers are up yet.
Jack Spicer Nov 12th 2008 1:11AM
Don't get all excited. I'm sure that when Blizzard gets the technical problems hammered out, they'll take back the candy you stole. They always do. And they might even suspend your account for stealing it in the first place.
futurebiblehero Nov 12th 2008 1:40AM
Why is it that I didn't even "steal" anything and I consider these comments unbearably obnoxious?
DAVID Nov 12th 2008 10:53AM
that is what im talkin about.bann them thieves lol.they knew damm well they were stealin if they didnt oh well weed out the many sacrafice a few who really didnt know comon blizz reward the honest and loyal w/a suspension to the ninjas!!!
