Bug rewards free and discounted PvP gear [UPDATED]
The mail debacle isn't the only strange thing coming out of today's maintenance. PvP armor, both honor gear and arena gear, have had their prices all screwed up.- Select Season 4 weapons have had their rating requirements removed.
- Select Season 2 weapons have found themselves bearing rating requirements they didn't previously have.
- Warlocks and Priests can purchase full sets of Season 2 gear at absolutely no cost whatsoever.
- Select Season 4 accessories can be acquired at no cost.
- The Brutal Gladiator's Hatchet is completely free as well.
Those are only the things we know of right now, the problem may even go farther than that. I've checked the Tiers 4, 5 and 6 vendors with a few friends of various classes and haven't run into any oddities there yet. It seems exclusive to PvP gear.
Before you get excited and run off to buy some gear, please keep in mind that while this is a bug, that could be considered an exploit. A bug isn't your fault but when you knowingly abuse it, it quickly becomes your problem. That being said, I don't think Blizzard will be banning any accounts over this, either. I would just recommend being careful and not abusing this.
I fully expect server restarts by morning to correct this issue, because it's kind of a big deal. Then again, we're going to be in Northrend tomorrow evening and this gear will quickly be replaced. Maybe they won't bother, but I sort of have my doubts. If you see something about a server shutdown or restart in the next few hours, this would be why.
2:20 am: Blizzard has added a message to the login screen mentioning that they are aware of the issue, and asking us to avoid purchasing these items.

If blizzard wanted to annoy people .. they could let everyone keep the gear .. but charge their toons accounts for the honor cost.
(-100000k honor for all the items you took!)
haha
Who knows... maybe its Thrall's Call To Arms .. Free weapons for the upcoming war.

Weird. My realm is still down, but I just opened up WoW and didn't see that message at the log in screen.
Not saying I don't believe it, though. Thinking that Blizzard was going to ignore it or not fix it (i.e. take your free epics) was wishful thinking.
Hopefully they won't notice the broom duration bug, though. >.>

"Weird. My realm is still down, but I just opened up WoW and didn't see that message at the log in screen."
It's not on the logon screen. It's the text message you see after you log on.

Anybody bothered to check the prices on the PVP mounts yet?
:x worth a try! lol
Darkke Nov 12th 2008 2:51AM
Yes. No change there. And while we're at it, the 40,000 honor trinket is still full cost :-(

The change of power in the white house is going smoother than wolk, something strange is brewing

They'd better not do a rollback... I'm a 65, and i spent the day (what little of it I could) questing. I got almost half a level, and i really don't want to have to re-do that this close to launch.

ACTIBLIZZ is really a gov't program...no other way to explain how well it's running things....
But let me just get this straight...they F'd with the mail?? Don't buy that for a second....HERE'S WHAT I THINK
The dev's were backed into a corner the moment the ACTI'tard execs tossed a release date to the "public" (their shareholders)...they raced to get through beta and the PTR (for 3.0)... they "managed" 3.0-3.0.2 and we've been limping ever since...
The devs KNEW they were short on time a long on problems...SO, at the 11th hour, with no miracles happening, they needed to do something or risk millions of WotLK sales...I'M SURE they're able to access aspects of the code better w/o having to sustain live play...sooooo, they have a "mailbox" issue (which people won't REALLY complain about waiting for, since they don't wanna lose all their stuff)...this buys them nearly a full day to cram in some last-minute-but-vital adjustments to welcome the expansion on thursday.
THAT'S MY THEORY... not too out there, but i've been calling it since they slipped the release date: Those dev's don't work that way, and they were gonna have to pull some s**t at the end to pull it off....that was today.
Andrew Welch Nov 12th 2008 2:42AM
They are already working on the next expansion.
Mo Nov 12th 2008 3:45AM
Taking an expansion through its ideas, concepts, lore-related storylines, characters, classes, possible ability-changes, etc is one thing...but turning that into a fully-functional virtual world hosting a MMORPG is a HUGE step...our current problems are testament to the scale of that implementation....
There's no doubt Blizz is one of the best around, with resources to match, but even THEY get caught with this stuff....Blizz would always use the "ready when it's ready" explanation for release dates (i'm sure they had internal expectations, but the quality of the material came first and foremost)...Activision is publicly held and, therefore, has to meet both general and legal expectations: it was in their interest to give a solid release date MUCH earlier than Blizz had a history of ever doing....this is why.
IDC if they're working on two expansions from now (there are actually two more are slated after WotLK- after that? who knows), I'm guessing they were pressed to release sooner than they'd hoped/wanted/expected.
Anyone who's been part of a small, tight-knit group only to have a large, impersonal authority suddenly call the shots knows how that would feel....the bottom line becomes the focus very quickly, and you don't exactly have a say in that matter.

"Blizzard has added a message to the login screen mentioning that they are aware of the issue, and asking us to avoid purchasing these items."
There you go... now respect blizz and stop buying...
Travicon Nov 12th 2008 2:37AM
I did a quick log off and don't see the new message.
n00blet Nov 12th 2008 2:38AM
That's not the message I see
Nesta Nov 12th 2008 2:39AM
I love how there are people going around saying Blizzard is going to ban everyone who's grabbing up this free loot. I don't doubt that it'll probably get deleted but come on, how stupid do you have to be to think Blizzard is going to ban ALL of these people right before Wrath comes out? Think people.
Jacobs Nov 12th 2008 2:41AM
Holy crap. My friend just got an email saying he got a 3 day ban for taking pvp items!
elvendude Nov 12th 2008 2:46AM
I would like to roll my will to disbelieve, please.
I don't normally say this, but...screenshot, or I don't believe you.
Mike Nov 12th 2008 2:47AM
Riiiiight....
Dawyn Nov 12th 2008 2:44AM
Blizzard wast thinking of giving us the best possible experience on launch day.
They realized that if everyone logged in on release day, the server would be laggy and quest mobs would be hard to tag.
Thus, they schemed how best to prevent half of the subscribers from logging in on release day.
Their plan, release free epics as a bug, then ban all those who bought it for 3 days and remove it as well.
