If you don't care about the CE pet then sure you can do that, but i'm fairly certain you cant change the Wrath serial key once you input it.
So no Frost wyrm on that account.

If it's like TBC you can get the CE pet.. But you'll need to call up blizzard, have them reverify the account or something, give them the key, stay on hold for 3 days, Jump through hoops, bring them a shrubbery, and cut down the biggest tree in the forest with a herring.

If you downloaded the patches through the wow background downloader and installed them that way, would they still be on my hard drive or are they automatically deleted?

Since I'm having a brain fart I'll ask. Even though the current game is patched to 3.0.3 wrath is going to roll back to 3.0.1. Shouldn't it automatically update since we have the patches?

Thanks for providing both Windows and Mac-Versions as well as all the different versions for each language. While Wowinsider sure is a US-focused site, many European players (like me) are reading it every day and we always appreciate it when we're acknowledged to exist ;-)

You CAN upgrade an account from a non-CE to a CE, It just basically wastes money, because then your non-CE Serial cannot be used again. So you'd be out the $40 for it.

I think what this means is that the game comes loaded only up to 3.0.1 and then it will be updated to the current patch once its installed. This means that you, and everyone else, will be downloading the patches after they install so if you download them now it will make getting online faster.

Thanks but i contacted blizz tech support and they said
"In regards to WotLK and patches, it will revert you back to 3.0.1. If you do not have the patch files on your system it will attempt to download them again for you. If you've left the patches alone and they still exist fine, the WotLK installer will attempt to use them automatically after installation completes. "

Sorry Mike, I try to respond to comments but I had to step away for a bit to get some sleep. =)
You should be fine. If you have all your patches saved, like the Blizzard rep says, then you'll be able to use them to upgrade WotLK correctly.
If you don't and need to download them, getting them from us will likely be faster than getting them from the Blizzard Downloader.

Look for the file: WoW-3.0.2.9056-to-3.0.3.9183-enUS-patch.exe
I believe if you see this, you're good to go in terms of re-patching the WOTLK without any additional downloading.

On Vista all patches are store in:
(DRIVE):\Public\Public Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft
