Death Knight creation bug solution
There is a bug currently affecting the creation of Death Knights after you have installed Wrath of the Lich King.If you get an error when creating the Death Knight, and you have met the requirements of having a level 55 character on the server in which you're creating the Death Knight, just make a new level 1 character first.
After that character is created, you can then create your Death Knight without any more problems.
I have to wonder how the bug came to be, and why they weren't able to fix it. We probably won't know either of those answers. But at least we have a quick and dirty fix.
Happy Northrending!

Umm, what if you only have one slot open and that's for your DK? I hope this is hotfixed soon.
MaddJoe Nov 12th 2008 5:55PM
I had this question as well...
Jason Nov 12th 2008 6:00PM
I was wondering the same thing.

Create a level 1 anything in that slot, delete it, create DK. One assume this should work, and properly update the classes available.
Danta Nov 12th 2008 6:25PM
I'm wondering if just the creation of the level 1 and then deleting that character solves the problem for people with only one slot remaining.

Damn, WoWInsider picks up these articles fast.

Toooootally not going to make a DK for a while. It's going to be like recess at the kindergarten out there!
Kaous Nov 12th 2008 6:18PM
Gonna make a DK just so that I get rested exp. Will wait a week or two before actually playing a DK.
stevens.ce Nov 12th 2008 6:25PM
Ditto there - rested XP, if any is granted, will be nice to move the whole thing along (although I wonder if you can level beyond 58 in the "instanced" (I'm forgetting the new term) Death Knight area. I assume so, but I'm willing to be surprised.

You can easily hit 58 with the DK in the DK build up zone. You stop in at Stormwind to talk to the King. Then you can fly to the keep and run into the portal. You have all the FPs avail. The DK zone ran amazingly smooth - I was suprised. The respawn rates were quick - actually too quick at one time when I was in the Hold, there were no other DKs around within a 2 - 3 minute span and mobs popped so fast, I would be killing one while another is spawning in the same place.
The gear you get for the DK from the quests are very nice - blues, which I found were not being replaced by the initial gear around honor hold - the blue were significantly better than what I am finding on the initial quests. My two 70's were leather and cloth wearing, so first time really examining the plate and sword/ax weapons.

Did I miss something along the way? I thought all along Blizzard said you could create a Death Knight on any server, one per server, as long as you had a level 55 toon ON ANY SERVER. Did I read that wrong all along, or did this just recently change?
Danta Nov 12th 2008 6:27PM
Yeah they changed it. For the time being, you can only create a DK on the server you have a lvl 55+ toon on. They said that they will be changing it later on, but had no time frame for it.
RetDwarf Nov 12th 2008 6:45PM
I thought the same thing, when did that get changed?? I planned on joining a friend on another server with a DK toon so that I didn't have to spend hours and hours in the lowbie areas... damn.
Does anyone have any clue as to when they might eb implementing this? or is it more of a "we don't want you idiots breaking our new areas" kind of thing?

I didn't know this had changed either. I was going to make a DK on a friend's server so I don't have to pay for another transfer. Bummer.
Gazoo Nov 12th 2008 6:31PM
This is probably related to the server index display bug. The server list often does not display the full number of toons you have (people were running into this a lot when getting near their limit..the screen would show 9 toons on a server when they actually already had 10).
The list often needs to be updated with some sort of new input to 'kick start' the db to update properly. Adding a level 1 toon would force the data to update to the current correct amount.

Strange. My wife and I installed WotLK and upgraded our accounts successfully, but while she can see the DK icon (greyed out) on the character creation screen, I can't.
Went to Account Management and we both have the same account type (WotLK).
Tried making a new toon, and deleting. No DK icon.
Tried making a new toon then a DK. No DK icon.
Logged in as her account on my PC. No DK icon. Hmmm...
Logged in as my account on her PC - I can see the DK icon!
Sounds like I have a total reinstall on my hands 4 hours before launch - sweet!
Unless someone has another idea.... :)

Log into your account on her PC, create the Death Knight, then go back to yours.

Turns out I had a bunch of (old) folders in my Interface directory (besides the Addon folder). These files contained old maps (which were also wonky) and messed around with the graphics on the create character screen.
I simply deleted these folders (keeping my Addons folder of course) and I am back in action.
Thanks for feedback Raaj.

You put "met the requirements of having a level 55 character on the server". I thought you can start a DK on any server, as long as one character was at levek 55?

I suspect there are going to be many bugs and exploits as far as Death Knight creation goes. Here are some possibilities:
1) If you have a level 70 main and create a Death Knight and then transfer your main to a diffrent realm; Can you then create a Death Knight on that realm as well?
2) Can you use character transfers to have more than one Death Knight on a realm?
