Just a quick note here for our readers who are lined up (or are planning to line up) at a GameStop: we're getting reports that
GameStop stores are having serious issues with credit cards at the moment, and according to
Adam Holisky, a number of people are being turned away or asked to bring cash in order to pay for the game. So far we've confirmed that the issue is occuring at GameStops in
Madison, Fargo, Las Vegas, and Kansas City. We haven't heard about any issues occurring at other stores' midnight releases, so for the moment we're assuming that the issues are specific to GameStop's system and they're aware of the problem.
So, just as an FYI if you've reserved a copy at a GameStop, you may want to bring enough cash with you to cover the game's cost just in case yours is one of the affected stores. I'll update this post as more information becomes available.
UPDATE: Yep -- from both comments here and emails we've received, it's pretty apparent that it's a nationwide issue for GameStop. Credit card authorization has to be done manually so things are, as one of our readers has put it, "taking forever." Take cash, folks.

Just to "bump" even though I'd normally consider this rude...
According to the GameStop employee at my local Oshkosh, WI store, this is a NATIONWIDE problem--it affects every GameStop. All credit/debit transactions have to be processed manually. At our store, they had people form two lines--cash/prepaid, and credit card. They were manually authorizing cards as fast as they could over the phone.
Thank the elements I was at the front of the line.

After working at a best buy for 3 years, I think this should be common sense. ALWAYS carry cash for events like this. Whether the first day selling Wiis (someone was threatening lawsuit.. but that's a whole different story), or the first day of a huge game release. Bring cash on Green friday also.

Maryland. The stores in the Wheaton/Rockville/Bethesda area have credit card outages.

Also in Southfield, MI :(

The ones in TN are having the same issue. My local store said the ones in the area were risking it and forcing all cards through as long as the ID matched the card and they "seemed" legit.

How are they having credit card problems for a midnight launch in Las Vegas when it is currently 10:21 here?
Jess Q. Nov 13th 2008 1:25PM
Well at our store they were doing transactions before the midnight launch and then giving you your receipt and saying to wait in line til midnight. At least that's how I understood it; I was with someone who bought it and didn't get a copy myself. (Amazon's got mine in the mail.)
Alewood Nov 13th 2008 1:23AM
Why are they having problems in Las Vegas, the game hasn't been released here....yet?
Mark Nov 13th 2008 1:58AM
Because they are allowing you to pay for it at 10, but you can't get the game until 12. Stupid, I know, but that's what they are doing
Aaron Nov 13th 2008 1:22AM
Whoo! I was the second guy to get the game at my location, and my card worked fine.
