Ghostcrawler speaks! about talents, the forums, and his whiteboard
He talks about what it was like coming from working on Age of Empires III for Ensemble Studios, and Blizzard's theory of "concentrated coolness" -- they want there to be cool everywhere you look in the game. He says dispel and spell pushback mechanics are still due for updates, and of course he talks about talent changes (this is Ghostcrawler, what did you expect): Destruction Warlocks and Ret Pallys get mentioned, and he says there's a whiteboard in his office with a list of things he wants to fix. Affliction Warlocks, you're next. Beware of ending up on Ghostcrawler's nerfboard!
We're kidding again. GC also talks about the long-awaited dual-spec feature, and says that they're thinking of building in costs like the Mage table, where everyone will have to click on something to change a spec, or there may be a consumable charge. He specifically mentions a "trash" build versus a "boss" build, so we'll have to see how that works out -- it would be a little weird to have to get a full raid together to change over to your PvP spec. And lastly, he talks about the forums -- their goal there is to have people talk to each other, not yell at each other. And good luck with that. Very nice interview.

Personally I would really dislike the duel specs if they made it like a mage table, where you have to get people in your party to click. I don't mind a consumable cost, but if I want to switch my druid from her main spec as a resto, to feral to do some solo mob grinding for a few hours, I don't want to have to rely on getting a 5-man party for doing so.

Head to your local druid trainer and do a regular respec?
Belynar Nov 13th 2008 3:15PM
I agree completely. While I don't like the idea of building in gold costs for it, which is very similar to the respec idea in place already, I do like the idea of being able to shift between a healing spec and a DPS/tank spec (Druid here).
Perhaps if they make it a class specific quest to get the ability to switch specs, like the druid swift flight form quest chain (now defunct :( )

I really like the reagent idea.

"We're kidding again."
... or are you?
dun dun dun

I don't think he meant you will actually have to click on an object like the mage table to change specs. He was just using the mage table as a (weird) example of how the spec swapping may have a limited number of "charges" or uses within a certain amount of time, say, like a maximum of 5 spec swaps every 60 minutes.
BlueDragon666 Nov 13th 2008 3:38PM
I think it should be something like an out-of-combat 30-second cast, similar to some crafting casts. I think the cast time should be sufficient, using consumables to change spec is absurd. No groups to help you change your spec either, that's garbage. Also, preventing you from changing specs inside a bg as they discussed earlier is a good idea.
One possible scenario:
I want to do some AV's on my pally, so I go in as ret. Then I want to switch to WSG, so when I'm done with my AV I do my 30-second respec cast to switch to holy, and go into WSG. When I'm done with WSG, I decide to go do a heroic instance. I switch to prot with my 30-second cast and away I go. If they want to implement a cooldown, maybe something like 10 minutes would be fine with me...it doesn't need to be any more than that imo.
Seems reasonable to me. Thoughts?

I had similar thoughts here as well. Obviously there has to be some sort of limiting factors to it... you can't make it an instant cast spell that works everywhere and while in combat. This is the list I think would be useful.
* Cooldown. Either set time such as one or two hours. OR Progressive cooldown over a rolling 24 or 48 hour period. ie. 1st Switch = 1 Hour CD. 2nd = 2 hour CD. 3rd = 4 hour CD, etc.
* Reagent - Tie the cooldown to the use of a consumable reagent that gives a debuff when eaten. Debuff is that you can't use the reagent again for X length of time.
* May only consume reagent in a city or an Inn. (Possibly require a person be in a rested state in order to respec.)
* Reagent must be consumed like foods or drinks... must sit for 30 seconds.
* Class specific quest, gaining some sort of class mastery title making you a sort of assistant trainer... unable to train others, but able to retrain yourself. (This one is a little far fetched but allows for an additional achievement, haha.)
Anyway, these are just a few ideas.

This makes me think of Captain Planet.
Quick everyone, lets respec to Captain Planet: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Heart!!

No.
Xavs Nov 13th 2008 3:50PM
Please don't even joke about warlocks getting nerfed.
Please.
twh Nov 13th 2008 4:57PM
Why not? I mean, people plenty of jokes about paladins getting nerfed and you've been OP for far longer than ret paladins have been.
Nerf warlocks.
Deepcut Nov 17th 2008 8:28AM
GC states Destro locks were pushing one button, but yet Frost mages spam frost bolt still today.
Whats wrong with this picture....

/sigh
where to begin:
first just pause it and look at his smug look...
second.. what the hell is up with his shirt? it says "ride" then "northrend" with the lich kings helm on it.. sooo we're supposed to ride northrend? or ride the lich king?how much do those mounts cost.. oh wait $40-$70..
as for what he said:
"we have a lot of head designers who work in different areas"
which means "most of what i do is play with the classes and troll the forums".. don't tell me he doesn't he's SAID he read ALL the forums and wowinsider even caught him saying it..
i love the comment about how they always put things on the back burner... like we couldn't guess that... and what about not having time? they kinda have all the time in the world to add and change things, they just don't choose too..
whiteboard.. otherwise known as "board of death" or maybe "the TO THE GROUND board"
as for the spec changing/duel spec thing... he doesn't seem to know what they hell he's even talking about .. he just rambles crap we cant understand and then the only thing we can hear is "maybe its going to be a mage table.. or a consumable"... ummm uhhh yeah.. did he spontaneously get drunk or something?
the rest of the interview doesn't seem to have any other funny funny crap..
it just seems to me if any of this is a joke that GC or just blizzard itself needs to stop with the comedics and get with the program(ing). we don't want rambling, weird shirts or jokes.. we want real content, not just "promised content" that hits the back burner.

Dude... you're offended by GC's shirt? What is wrong with you?
GC has done a better job communicating with players than any developer I've ever seen. Sounds like a bitter ret pally to me.
Zali Nov 13th 2008 4:18PM
/hug
You are a very sad and bitter person. Have you no joy?
BTW, Blizzard doesn't have "all the time in the world to add and change things." Like the rest of us they are limited by traditional physics. There are only so many people working on WOW at any given moment in time. Time is limited unless the new Blizz Building has its very own CoT in the basement. There is real finite limit to how much they can do. So, they make priorities. Just like the rest of us.
Dranaerys Nov 13th 2008 7:20PM
There, there.. here's some cheese to go with your whine.
Jason Nov 15th 2008 1:08AM
His shirt (I think) is a parody of the snowboarding shirts: "RIDE: [insert snowy mountain name here]"
Northrend is snowy.
Ride: Northrend
The image just goes along with the territory. Pretty typical for a snowboard shirt.

I wasn't going to post, but i thought about it and decided it was necessary.
Blizz has gone a long way to make every spec viable. Prot Warriors are now 2cnd or 3rd on DPS. Resto Shaman are now running around with 1200 Spell Power. I can't speak for holy priests because I haven't respec'd holy, but a Holy/Disc build is very viable, raid, solo, PVP.
I think the situation that necessitated spec swapping has passed. People should now be spec'ing to suit their play style, and optimizing their play style. There shouldn't be any 'raid-only' specs that are totally gimped in Solo/PVP play.
So, i hope they never come up with a spec switching mechanic. Because it is so very hard to play two specs well, I can't see switching mid-raid to be useful. I expect it would be very wasteful of time as people reset action bars, macros, swapped around gear, etc. Their performance as they became 're-acclimated' to their new spec would suffer.
Nah, lets just let this idea die a peaceful death.
