So wait, you are suggesting that Blizzard spend a lot of money and time upgrading both servers, databases and software just so that for a few days every 2 years, when an expansion hits, an unusually high number can access the server at once? That's business sense right there!
If they were to do this it would also mean a lot of maintenance downtime and instability as new hardware was burnt in and new backend code was fully tested. I vaguely recollect huge maintenance times before TBC was launched (including a 24 hour one I think) and everyone then moaned about lack of access. The sad truth is you can't have it both ways...
