Ask a Wrath Player: From the ashes

We're definitely here to stay, though. We're going to continue using the Q&A format for AAWP or AABT or AAGoGS or AASS or whatever bizarre acronym we end up with, so if you have any questions about Wrath or even the game in general, please ask! We have a very diverse crew here at WoW Insider, so if there's something I don't know personally, there's a big team I can ask. We don't have a lot of questions to answer from yesterday because everyone was busy partying hard to celebrate (mourn?) the end of AABT, but we'll answer what we have
Brill asked...
Is there a macro I can use to summon a random mount/noncombat pet no matter how many I have? I already know /castrandom (item names), but eventually you'll run out of room in your macro and some will be left out.
Unfortunately, I'm terrible with figuring out macros. Fortunately, we have some fantastic folk that read the site. Chris Anthony has the answer you're looking for:
/run c=GetNumCompanions("CRITTER");n=math.random(c);CallCompanion("CRITTER",n);
Replace both instances of the word "CRITTER" with "MOUNT" and it will summon a random mount instead of a random pet. Voila!
mizatt asked...
What ever happened with the ability to switch quickly between two specs? Is that implemented in the expansion? Or is that something they're going to patch into the game later?
That didn't make it in for Wrath of the Lich King's launch, but it is something that's still coming our way, and something I'm personally looking forward to. The most recent information we've heard about dual specs is that it will hopefully be made available in patch 3.1, Wrath's first full content patch. We haven't heard any super recent information about that, but it's probably our best bet right now.
And that's really all we have today! I know you have questions though, so ask them in the comments section below and we'll be here to answer. Like before, if we have a massive amount of questions in one day we may not be able to get to them all the very next day, but we'll certainly do our best to get to them all eventually.

I don't know if you're still answering questions, but I have one anyway.
While playing a Death Knight I got to see phasing in action and it was wonderful! The fact that players vanished and NPCs moved... it was just very cool. That said, I was wondering about an area in Borean Tundra and if it was another phasing zone.
Just south of the Alliance's Valiance Keep there's the Riplash Strand. Whenever you run into it, baddies suddenly appear and a white haze forms around your screen. Yet, take a few steps back and the baddies vanish and your screen goes back to normal. I know the area is supposed to be covered in fog so is this effect caused by running in and out of the mists, or is this also an area that can be phased?
Cysgodi Nov 14th 2008 2:10PM
That's phasing in action. When you go into the fog, it phases you so that you can see the mobs there (and consequently so that they can see you). If you watch closely, you'll notice that other players who run into the fog disappear ;).
Mimzy Nov 14th 2008 2:36PM
But does that mean you can exterminate all the bads inside of it so that they don't appear at all anymore? And if so, how? I reached the end of the quest chain from the Tuskar and don't see any more for this area.
Cysgodi Nov 14th 2008 2:42PM
No, it depends on how the phasing is used. In those particular areas, the criteria for being phased is that you have to be standing within a certain range of coordinates. Anybody within those coordinates will be phased. Other areas will phase based on the quests that you've completed. The fog, though, will always phase you into the same situation regardless of the quests that you do.

Any word on how or if we can get 'Chilly the Penguin'? I've heard conflicting stories about how you get it and some that say that it was for the beta testers only.

In Beta players got it as a gift for creating a temporary Blizzard account to log in. There haven't been any Blue posts confirming whether Chilly will be obtainable or not in live, but I have a suspicion that it has something to do with this http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/11/11/blizzard-prepares-for-switch-to-battle-net-accounts/.

I sure hope they tell us something soon. Chilly > Pengu. Pengu is fricking creepy with those red eyes of his. Maybe for my DK, but my druid wants CHILLY!

lol My thoughts exactlly Evi!

Whats the best weapon for a death knight? I made an orc, so i was gonna go with the 2h axe for the final dk quest, yet what about the weapons in northrend? Should i stick with the axe trend? I don't want to hinder myself with only going with axes if the 2h swords/maces are better. Also, if i do BS, should i do armor or weapon, and if weapon, should i continue with the axe theme?

Around the Beta time of Wrath the developers had said that they plan to unlock death knights across all realms as long as you had one 55. The FAQ on this issue is not clear if they are going to enable this in the future. What does the WOW insider team say?
Also leveling a death knight is the most fun I have had in quite a while. It makes me feel like a Mini-Vader with my gnome :) Do you guys get the same feelings :)
Cysgodi Nov 14th 2008 3:17PM
Yes, if you have one character at level 55 or higher on any realm, you are allowed to create one Death Knight per realm. Meaning, if you have one level 55 character on say, Lightning's Blade, you can make as many Death Knights as you want between Lightning's Blade and any other realm, so long as you don't attempt to make more than one on each realm.
Personally, I think the Death Knight starting area is one of the most fun experiences in the game. It's neck-and-neck with the Nexus right now :).
adx of lothar Nov 14th 2008 3:40PM
Actually you cannot make as many death knights as you want. As it stands at this point in time it is one death knight per realm that you have one 55 charcter on. In my case i want to make a death knight on antondias but i can't due to the fact that i have no 55 on that server.

My question pertains to various siege weapons. At the moment, i've used the cannon and the dragon in the DK starting area, and the tank from Garrosh's landing, and i have yet to figure out a way to control them that doesn't require four hands. How does one aim and steer at the same time? Are there hotkeys to control the pitch of your gun? (I know the tank had pitch buttons, not so sure about the others)

Hold down your right mouse button and move the mouse up and down to affect distant, move it left and right to adjust which way your facing.

Sorry if this got answered back in the day, but how do Heroics work now? I don't see any keys anywhere; is there a quest you do at 80 that grants access to all of them (like Kael's Unfortunate Head did for Magisters)? Or do you just have to hit 80?
Thander Nov 14th 2008 4:44PM
Everyone has full access to heroics when they hit 80. There are no restrictions now.
Stefan Nov 14th 2008 4:06PM
How aboout we call it Ask an Alpha Omega has a nice ringt ot it lmao

Here's a question:
I spent the first day in the Fjord levelling all my professions. I've got herbalism at 420 and alchemy at 400. I went to both alchemy trainers after dinging 400 alch and I still haven't found the recipe for the crazy alchemists potion (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40077) which originally had information saying you can train for it at 375. Is there a level requirement to get this recipe (like lvl 75)? or is this just a bug?
Also I didn't see any sign of the Shoveltusk Soup recipe(http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34126#comments) after completing the chilled-meat quest for cooking. Any sign of changes or restrictions on this recipe?
jurandr Nov 15th 2008 1:21AM
Are you horde?
The soup is available to alliance only.
The alchemist's potion reciepe is sold by a vendor in Dalaran, but not in any of the other zones. (unless your alliance, where it is sold by trainers in each of the zones.)
