It's tough to get a clear idea what the original plan was for the pre-Wrath event.
On one hand, the zombie invasion ended early; like it or not (I loved it), it wasn't very well implemented. Since we will likely never know what was originally planned, its early end left a big void as we got closer to Wrath's launch and it felt very awkward.
According to sound files, Orgrimmar was supposed to get razed, and it didn't happen. The final event that started on Monday evening (for US realms) was watered down; the mobs weren't dangerous, it was all scripted and didn't engage players into doing anything. Tuesday/Wednesday was the big outtage, so many missed the attack, couldn't log in or just didn't want to stick around due to restarts, literally canceling the feeling that a world event was happening.
All in all, the launch went really well, but the events leading up to it were obviously botched and poorly thought out (at least for the bits that we got, us not being in the developers' head).
