The zombie event was handled poorly. Blizzard sprung a whole new player interaction dynamic into the game with no notice -- even on a PvP server, players cannot attack players of the same faction -- and had the zombie infection went from kinda cool to kinda annoying to frustrating as hell in a factor of days, with no end in sight.The lore started to provide a solution -- the Argent Dawn sets up shop in Shattrath and Putress opens a lab -- but after the initial "quick, take this item to your monarch!" quest, there was... nothing. Cool, Argent Dawn figured out how to use concentrated "Light" to attack the Scourge, but what does that mean for us players? Putress is working on a cure for the plague, but how do I get around in Orgrimmar until then?I really tried to get into the spirit of the invasion. I literally spent hours on that first weekend killing both player and non-player zombies, both for my own amusement and to defend lowbies levelling in Westfall. I kited NPC zombies into the Argent Dawn healer in Shattrath by the dozens and died half a dozen times myself. What happened as a result? I got frustrated and logged out, because nothing I did AS A GOOD GUY had any impact on the event. I had people bitching ME out because they just "were just having fun" ganking fellow Alliance players 50 levels lower than them, many of whome did not ask to be part of such an event.Meanwhile, zombies were happily turning Ironforge into a wasteland and packing the Mage's Tower in Stormwind with zombies to instantly gib anyone who ported in. It's no surprise that Shattrath became a favorite target for zombies, because Blizzard either overlooked or allowed that zombie players could attack non-zombie players, but the non-zombies couldn't attack back.The zombie invasion should have been more interactive on the good guy side. The necrotic shards or additional Scourge bosses of all levels in the instances could have dropped widgets which, when turned in to the Argent Dawn or Putress, allowed players to dial back the severity of the plague, or reinforced their capital cities with more Argent Dawn Healers or soldiers. But as it was, it was set up to reward griefing, and so griefing occurred in spades.

If only the people in the middle ages who contracted the black plague knew all they had to do was ask not to be a part of it...

False equivalency. The Black Death was not 100% infectious -- otherwise there would be a lot fewer European complexions in the world -- and would have responded to sensible measures for preventing infection like proper hygiene and identifying and blocking the vectors of transmission. (Also, the victims did not get back up after dying, or seek out infection in order to infect others.)The zombie infection transcended the accepted rules of diseases in the game. Opening a box infects me with a disease that kills in minutes, and cannot be cured by even a level 70 paladin? The victim would probably not live long enough for the infection to spread effectively; at most, it would have killed everyone in Booty Bay and gone no further.Regardless, I do not pay $15/month to take part in a real-world infection simulator. I signed up for a role-playing game, and I chose a PvE server because I don't grief other players and don't care to deal with people who do.If you'd actually read my comment, you will see that I CHOSE to take part in the event, and did my best to kill as many zombies, both PC and NPC, as I could. (Especially the PCs, as nothing is quite as delicious as griefer tears.)Blizzard broke some of their own rules in order to make the outbreak more "fun" (players not being able to reliably cure or avoid the disease, zombie PCs in Shattrath able to attack non-zombies PCs but non-zombies unable to attack zombies) and did not provide players who wanted to fight the outbreak with enough tools to do so.It was a ham-handed railroad job that any seasoned DM in a tabletop roleplaying game would be embarrased to put their players through. Why did the plague vanish? It sure as hell wasn't anything I or any of the other players did to fight the zombies. The way the infection spread on my server, the only Alliance characters to survive the infection would have been the ones that were never played during the outbreak, which means Arthas would be facing the might of banking alts and battleground twinks.
