Spiritual Guidance: Wrath Priest leveling guide from 70 to 75

Every Sunday (usually), Spiritual Guidance will offer practical insight for priests of the holy profession. Your host is Matt Low, the grand poobah of World of Matticus and a founder of PlusHeal, a new healing community for all restorative classes. This week Matticus is going to look at the introductory zones of 70 to 75!
Welcome to Northrend! Ready to take on Arthas? Here is a quick primer on the road to 80. For part 1, we'll look at an example leveling spec (which isn't Shadow), early spells, different zones, and some tips.
SpecMy personal spec of choice has always been to go a combination of Holy and Discipline. I can still maintain a decent pace soloing and I can still remain viable in instance healing. Believe me, as a non-Shadow Priest leveling, there will never be a shortage of players looking for healers for an instance.
The one I picked for leveling from 70 is a pseudo-hybrid 31/27/3 build.
Highlights
Power Infusion – Haste every 2 minutes. Keep this up as often as possible.
Surge of Light – Free Smite (or Flash Heal). Watch for the proc and use it according to your situation. Full health? Use it on a Smite. Took some damage? Slap on a Flash Heal.
Spirit Tap – Minimization of downtime. This skill is virtually essential in order to reduce the amount of drinking to do.
DPS Method
Cast your Power Word: Shield up before you open fire. Remember that Holy Fire is a 1.5 second cast when talented. Open up with that spell first, follow up with a combination of Mind Blasts and Smites. Keep doing this until the target you're hitting reaches ~3000 health. Finish it off with a Smite and an Shadow Word: Death. If it still has health remaining, tap your Holy Nova once or twice to make sure it stays down.
Against multiple mobs, keep your Shield up as often as you can. Focus down one mob at a time. If you notice your health getting lose, use instant spells like Prayer of Mending and Renew to keep yourself up. The goal isn't to DPS all the mobs down as fast as possible. It's to go at it slowly and surely while keeping yourself up. You want to try to outlast the mobs as much as you can. If you have Super Mana Potions lying around, don't hesitate to bust one. Your Shadowfiend's a great tool as it can help provide a small burst of damage and provide you with more mana.
Preparation
Stock up on some Pugnant Seal Whiskey from the local Inn. About 80 is a good number. This is also a good time to use up any stockpiles of Spell damage food that you might continue to have. Super Mana Potions are nice to have in case you need mana in a pinch. Check out WoW Insider's guide to preparing for Wrath with consumables.
Zones of Interest
Check the guide to get to Northrend!
Borean Tundra – Accessible via the Stormwind Harbor for Alliance and the zeppelin from Durotar. It's possible to navigate from Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord without resorting to flying mounts of a continent-wide trek. You get introduced to Malygos. Give Nexus a shot (after you do the various quests in the region to gain access to further Nexus-related quests).
Howling Fjord – Accessible via Menethil Harbor for Alliance and the zeppelin from the Undercity. Utgarde Keep is the first instance you can enter. Don't forget to check out the walkthrough!
Dragonblight – At around 71 or 72, Dragonblight becomes appealing. Most players I've spoken with opted to go to the other introductory zone (Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord depending on which they did first). I suggest diving into Dragonblight as soon as you are almost done the introduction zone. Do the chain quests. Epic cinematic is epic.
Grizzly Hills - Located on the eastern side of Northrend and is a zone above Howling Fjord. You'll run into the Westfall camp here at some point. If you've run Shadowfang Keep before, you'll encounter an old friend.
Getting to Dalaran
Unlike Shattrath City, players can no longer simply ride into a neutral capital. There's a an attunement like quest. There's a variety of NPCs that can port players to Dalaran. You can only get this quest when you're level 74. On the other hand, you can also pay off a Mage or a Warlock to send you to Dalaran. Alternatively, you can get higher level guildies to queue for a Battleground from Dalaran and then AFK out (which should work at any level).
For Alliance – Magister Dath'omere (Valiance Keep, Borean Tundra), Baron von Stromhearth (Valgarde, Howling Fjord) and Magistrix Haelenai (Amberpine Lodge, Grizzly Hills).
For Horde – Image of Archmage Aethas Sunreaver (Agmar's Hammer, Dragonblight). There's undoubtedly similar NPCs in the respective Horde camps in the different zones. I just don't know the name of them since I'm Alliance (cue chorus of boos).
Skills
At 71, you learn Inner Fire at level 71. It's the only skill you learn at this level. It's entirely up to you if you decide to boat back to Stormwind or Ironforge to train it. I strongly suggest no if you're bent on hitting 80. I trained my skills at every second level. Besides, Holy Fire is the first DPS spell that gains a new rank (at 72).
For 74, you gain new ranks of Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Smite, and Devouring Plague.
General Leveling Tips
If you want to level as fast as humanly possible, you'll need to streamline your game plan.
- Don't sightsee. I know it's Northrend and it's all new. But if you don't care about the experience and just want to level to 80, you have to go straight from quest giver to objective.
- Do a bunch of quests at a time. Do all the quests at your local quest hub before going back to the hub. You waste less traveling time going back and forth in order to turn in individual quests.
- Forget professions. Leave those to 80. If you're a gatherer, you'll want your Cold Weather Flying training anyway (because it makes it easier). If you're a crafter, hold off some as raw materials are insanely expensive (a stack of Cobalt Ore is going for 300g. Ridiculous!)

Gah, homonym requires same spelling. Homophone? I"m going to bed.

well summed up TRW, although I'm a fan of power infusion (Infuses the target with power, increasing spell casting speed by 20% and reducing the mana cost of all spells by 20%. Lasts 15 sec.) big aoe pulls its priceless. ;)
as well as pain suppression.
but again two schools of thought here, you really can't go wrong atm as a priest.
I do get away with murder, umm miracles with a heavy disc spec ;)
Regens Nov 17th 2008 2:25AM
I do a spec just like it, only i pick up spirit and improved spirit, it really decreases your downtime, and the extra spell power really does come in handy.

Loving you for the choise of specc,Smite for the Win! :)

A nice post. I agree that this build is pretty much the best holy/disc grinding build available and would, combined with the other tips and tricks, provide the best leveling method as holy/disc priest. I'm not sure which glyphs would suit this build best as.. TBH, power word:shield nullifies the use of the glyph of smite.
And yet... I chose to sidetrack from this approach. While I love the holy/disc priest playstyle, I also love healing instances and won't level without them. This gives me a different set of requirements, talent wise. Mainly, I'm thinking of:
- Improved Renew, combined with the glyph of renew
- Spirit of Redemption (stacks nicely with spirit tap)
- Dropping Enlightment for (improved) Divine Spirit is debatable.. but 50 spirit and 53 spell power works nicely when leveling.
- Improved Healing instead of Holy reach. PW:Shield keeps mobs off anyway and they rarely manage to break it.
You will notice little difference in your grinding performance with these changes but it makes a notable difference in your healing. For those who are interested in healing an instance now and then, I can recommend them.

I used the same 31/27/3, only put the points in Enlightenment in Divine Spirit and Improved Divine Spirit. I get a nice boost in regen and spell power, much more benficial than Enlightenment in my opinion. Also I took Martyrdom 2/2instead of Improved Shield and full Improved Inner Fire. I spent the points of 71,72,73 in Reflective Shield, which I find amazing.
I totally agree with your DPS method, and strongly advise against the use of SW:Pain, unless you have a very low spell power (in which case you might prefer a Shadow spec). Holy Fire + Smite + Smite + SW:Death is enough against most mobs of your level.
Foussa Nov 17th 2008 5:23AM
Also, go get InnerFire at 71. 15 minutes lost for +95 spell power if a pretty nice trade in my opinion. But my hearthstone is still in Shattrath, so I may be biased :)

I've always chosen to level shadow, simply because holy was too much of a drag for me. I checked out several specs to pick before WoTLK was launched. I came to the conclusion that leveling as shadow (for me) was less effective the Disc/Holy.
The gear i'm wearing is mostly healing gear, based mainly around spirit regen. Now I have to say regen with shadow is also very nice, but I really enjoy the fact that in 6 levels I have yet to drink after a fight.
Shadow maybe has a few more tricks for survivability, with dispersion improved fade and shadowform.. But as disc I have yet to experience a personal fuckup that I can't heal through.
Besides that, the added bonus of being a healer is nice.. Prot warriors & druids tend to level abit faster nowadays, so finding a really effective dungeon group has become a joy. I can usually join in dungeons where otherwise (as dps) I would not be considered, because I would be 1 or 2 levels too low.
Talen spec for leveling these days, in my opinion, basicly comes down to personal choices. Although shadow might be a tad faster, it's nice to be able to have healed every instance before taking them on in heroic mode.

Also worth noting, at level 73 you get upgrades to your core healing spells - Flash Heal and Greater Heal - as well as a major upgrade to Desperate Prayer (goes from 1601-1887 to 3111-3669!).

The spec my Priest is using is based on the spec I saw someone using a few days ago, basically. When I hit 71 I went and respecced from full Disc to 51/0/11. This means that I have Penance and the upper Disc talents, and then into Shadow for Spirit Tap, Imp SW:P, and finally Mind Flay.
Mind Flay costs about half that of a Smite, so I never ever have mana problems while questing (usually using Shield, Holy Fire, Penance, SW:P, Smite, Mind Flay). Mobs die pretty easily; often before Weakened Soul fades even, I never take any damage, and Spirit Tap keeps my mana full after killing things. At the same time the Disc talents let me heal instances great too.
Although the loss of Divine Fury made me sad at first, I think I've used Greater Heal about 5 times since I came to Northrend. Everything else has been Shield/Penance/Flash. Healing Ahn'kahet when I was level 71 I never had mana problems, even during healing up AOE damage, and I'm only in T4 and slightly T5-ish gear. I've replaced several of my pieces already!

I'm lvling as 35/3/26, it enables me to gank alliance taking my mobs as well as grind extreamly fast, and I'ved healed everything up to the old kingdom so far without a problem.
Main benefits of this spec are power infusion, inner focus, reflective shield, a decent renew tick, spirit tap, silence and Vamp Embrace to keep topped up on hp when fighting more than 3 mobs and that alliance that always attacks you as you grind
Currently Lvl 73 atm after around 23 hours of playing ( took a week off work lol)
I usually open up with a mindblast and then dot everything up, followed by power infusion and then mindflay/mindblast/SW:D rotation.
KaKTy3 Nov 17th 2008 9:22AM
Sorry, but you need neither Holy Focus nor Blessed Recovery for solo levelling or instancing, and IDS provides more benefit than PI.
This is a better 30/28/3 levelling build (shift back to Holy Reach from Improved Healing if you prefer): www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVcbkhxdrhZcxtzcbqbZh

Would like 76-80 before I finish leveling :)

I never understood why anyone would want to level as fast as they can on an expansion. It seems to miss the whole point of "playing" a game if you have to reach level 80 1 week after the game comes out. To each their own, tho. I take my time and I do "sight see" and explore. Being the first among many to level 80 gets you what exactly?
mdhowle Nov 17th 2008 2:06PM
Getting to level 80 quickly lets you start on getting the pre-raid gear, which I believe is where the fun really is, not spending hours on end killing X for Y. I agree that there are some lore quest chains that's really interesting (and fun) but for the most part leveling is not fun.
Negas Nov 17th 2008 11:27AM
I agree with the spec for the most part, but I think you have your rotation wrong. If you start with Holy Fire instead of Smite, you are losing at least a second, maybe two, in your rotation.
My rotation is:
PW:S -> Smite -> Holy Fire -> Mind Blast -> Smite (hopefully free from Surge of Light) -> SW: D. If it's a larger mob, I throw in a SW:P before the second smite and usually wand them a bit too.
If you cast Smite first, you get your longest cast time out of the way before the mob charges. That allows you to fire off both the Holy Fire and Mind Blast before the mob even hits you.
But if you lead off with Holy Fire, you have to cast the longer smite while the mob is running, leaving you in the middle of your Mind blast when he hits you. That results normally in pushback of .5 seconds. Not only do you lose the 1 second cast time by casting smite second, but the pushback drops your efficiency as well.
To the person who stated you should use PW:S after your first two casts, I think that works for small mobs, but if the mob is going to drain your shield then the shield should be cast first. That allows you to start burning the drained soul time before the cast so you can get the shield up faster.
I leveled from 0-60 as straight holy. It was painful and had a lot of drinking involved. At 60 I discovered the IDS build and Spirit tap. I never drink. It's amazing. That, and I think I can down mobs as fasts as most DPS classes except for mages.
My favorite thing to do these days is draw 5-6 mobs and holy nova them to death. With Surge of Light you proc a free spell every 1-2 holy novas, so as you are killing them you can throw a flash heal out to stay alive. This works great if you are a skinner: those herds of rams and mammoths go down easily and by the time you are done skinning them, spirit tap has your mana full.
Ben F. (Hagios - Runetotem) Nov 23rd 2008 8:19AM
Why do you have your points in healing focus? WIth the current pushback rules it seems almost pointless. Please elaborate more.
Evi Nov 17th 2008 12:50PM
Thank you for this article. My priest is disc/holy and I found a lot of useful information here. I was shadow until level 60, and I'm still bored with it after all this time. I'm really enjoying being able to do significant damage without speccing into shadow again. It's nice to see others enjoy it, as well.
Doc X Nov 17th 2008 3:10PM
Smitelol for leveling? Seriously? Shadow has more damage output and lets you get through mobs faster. Smite/Holy Fire doesn't have the dps to match SW: Pain, Mind Blast, Mind Flay + Shadowfiend.
If you want to be a healer, run instances and heal. If you want to do solo questing, Shadow will be much faster.
Hedwig Nov 18th 2008 3:02PM
Okay, here it is... my very unconvential Holy/Disc spec. I have spent point that I'm sure make other priests lol if they inspect me. But I am LOVING it!
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVIbuh0zbZcxtcbrqbuZh
I can dps mobs fast and I have never dipped below half of my mana. This weekend we did Kara (we're strange like that, lol) and I never went below half of my mana in there. I was dps on all but a couple of bosses, and even on those I was just off-heals mixed with dps. I was worried with my full mana bar that my guildies would think I wasn't doing anything but the mana regen of that spec along with my gear is just fabulous. Shhh.. don't tell Blizz.
No, I don't need the Lightwell, but it's only one point and I like it. People are like "Oooh, a lightwell, what's that?" ROFL
