Starting zone upgrades in Northrend: Holy - Borean Tundra
HOLY / CRITIt's slim pickings for Holy Paladins over at the Howling Fjord, where most quest reward plate have no Intellect and a smattering of different stats. On the other hand, the plate rewards from Borean Tundra are excellent leveling pieces because of the crit. This is great for Holy Paladins and the newly improved 6-second Holy Shock. Among other things, of course.
1. Seabone Heaume
I didn't even know there was such as word as heaume, but it's apparently how Inspector Clouseau would pronounce 'helm'. Anyway, Horde players can get this quest from Garrosh's Landing, through the quest called Burn in Effigy. Alliance get this as a reward from a corpse, who gives the quest The Late William Allerton.
2. Sinking Pauldrons
The Night Elf in a murloc suit King Mrgl-Mrgl gives the quest Oh Noes, the Tadpoles! to both factions, which is the start of a series. It's an awesome quest that involves a lot of cute, baby murlocs.
3. Chestguard of Salved Wounds
Wendy Darren just outside of Valiance Keep will give the quest Take No Chances, which requires players to burn infected grain (the Horde at Vengeance Landing have to burn corpses...). Horde players can get this from a quest chain ending with Vermin Extermination, just East of Warsong Hold.
4. Amberplate Grips
Strangely, there are no spell power plate gloves in the Borean Tundra, but thankfully crit and haste both work for attack and spell power, making these Strength gloves a moderate alternative if you don't have better. Horde players get this from Cleaning Up the Pools in Taunka'le Village while Alliance players get it from the end of a quest chain, Give Fizzcrank the News.
5. Lost Crusader Waistguard
This crit and spell power plate belt is a reward from a quest called A Visit to the Curator, the last in a short chain from the Kalu'ak.
6. Benign Crusader's Plate
These Horde-only plate pants are a reward from the very first part of a short series of quests North of Warsong Hold. The quest, Foolish Endeavors, has players fighting alongside Saurfang himself. So let him do all the work. Alliance and Horde players can opt to get the Intellect-laden Plainwatcher Legplates, a reward from the D.E.H.T.A. quest The Culler Cometh.
7. Earthborn Greaves
This is a reward from the Horde-only quest Defeat the Gearmaster, where players will need to kill a Gnome that looks like Astro Boy gone wrong. Alliance players will have to miss out on the crit rating but get a good alternative with Mendicant's Treads, a reward from It's Time For Action, the middle quest of a moderately long series by Valiance Keep.
8. Medic's Morning Star
As with weapon choices, there are several to choose from in Borean Tundra. However, the only other spell power weapon that Paladins can use has Spirit, so it's probably better to still with the Intellect of Medic's Morning Star. Horde players get this midway through a short series right at Warsong Hold, Cutting Off the Source. Alliance players also get this early on from a chain by killing Nerubians outside Valiance Keep in The Siege.
9. Borean Ward
The Borean Ward is a decent mix of crit and MP5, albeit not having any spell power whatsoever. This is a reward at the end of a short D.E.H.T.A. quest chain called The Nefarious Clam Master, part of the 'master' series of kill quests in Borean Tundra.

While most of these items were not upgrades for me, I really enjoyed this article, I would love to see more things of this nature for paladins; maybe even end game gear lists?
DM7000 Nov 16th 2008 8:59PM
What I would really love would be a tankadin gear guide. I am honestly clueless as what to pick up right now. And my gear is really bad (I hit 70 about a week ago) so almost anything right now is an upgrade.
Schadow Nov 17th 2008 12:14AM
Did I count wrong, or is there only one piece of prot gear listed that has any defense rating at all?
Unless I missed some patch notes, we need more of the stuff every level, not less.
Great that it has a ton of stam, but tanking is about not getting hit, or mitigating as much of the hit as possible. This gear seems like we'd get creamed, but hey we have a lot of health so it's OK? Not so much unless healers can chain-chug pots again.
Spoonman Nov 16th 2008 9:56PM
I was thinking the same thing
Addie Nov 16th 2008 11:22PM
There's a good crafted set with plenty of defense... look up cobalt.
Zach Nov 17th 2008 12:18AM
Hi Schadow,
Yeah, there aren't very many Defense items from questing. This definitely isn't tanking gear. On the other hand, it's purely leveling gear that will help you in the grind more than tanking items would.
Killchrono Nov 17th 2008 3:53AM
There's some great tanking gear from Quest Rewards in the Nexus, but considering you need tanking gear to tank the instance (at least without much hastle) it doesn't help getting gear before the instance. Haven't done Utguarde yet, but I can assume there would be some good gear from quests rewards there.
Plus, none of the actual drops from those instances are tanking items. So much for gear homogonization and encouraging people to go prot/tank specs.

You are not alone in your thoughts.
The gear listed in the article fits better on a Crit Ret Pali. Tanks need Defence and Avoidance/Mitagation, with the gear listed an Uber mage from 25th of November could not keep me up in a 5 man 70-71 dungeon.
A Tank needs 490 Defence to tank a level 73 mob.
You need 5 more defence for each level above 73.
End Game Raiding will therefore require 540 defence
Migigation/Avoidance should be as high as you can get it. As a pali tank it's tough to get it high, but worth it for the BoSanc buff, It's HUGE. I'm AoE Soloing as many as 20-30 equal level mobs already and using every ability on cooldowns and I leave the fight with Full mana and almost full health (between Seals of light, wisdom and the Judgements of the same)...
Don't get me wrong though, I appreciate the writer's drive to write, however for Paladins begining to head down the Prot line I would suggest getting your information from a better authority over at http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com

Oops did I say Mage. I meant Priest...

What I'm really impressed with is how the quest rewards look like they fit together.
Not quite like a set, but not far off either.
It would seem they learnt from the mistake of making us all look like clowns in Outland.

I was just happy getting rid of a fairly off looking set of pink boots...
Jeez, BC quest rewards were horrible.
LendAHand Nov 17th 2008 8:12AM
A nicely done piece of work here, Zach. A decent gear upgrade that you can make for yourself, if your a Blacksmith is some of the Cobalt Pieces, they have some nice STR and STAM on them, along with high amounts of DEF.
Unstop Nov 17th 2008 10:54AM
I agree
i am ret spec (while picking up the dodge and parry but no kings) and tank Utgarde Keep and Nexus. I got 15K + buffs in my tanking gear and held aggro very well.
I think its good for people who are Kara level to change some of there gear for more stamina. For me i look at the gear, rarely is it more stamina but i also worry about loose my avoidance.
renkonel Nov 20th 2008 12:29PM
pally prot gear is supposed to have Spellpower, block rating, and defence at the least, but i heard most of the prot gear shows up in higher level regions.
Zach Nov 18th 2008 12:10PM
That's old thinking, really. New Prot gear will NOT have spell power. It will have tons of Stamina. The talent TOUCHED BY THE LIGHT will take care of Spell Power. Protection Paladins will pick up the same plate gear as Warrior and Death Knight tanks.
The gear here will not have much Defense or other mitigation stats because those will be specifically for instances. You won't need mitigation gear for grinding/leveling. The Strength + Stamina combination will produce the proper DPS and other necessary stats for leveling.
Tomarus Nov 17th 2008 1:51PM
Hmm... I have to agree that the prot gear is a little lackluster here, but it's true that the Nexus quest gear is definitely nice for +def and +dodge, with a little bit of +block value thrown in for good measure. If you haven't been running dungeons for a while pre-Wrath and don't have a decent set of gear to start from, the gear listed above can get you by for the time being.
Also, if you really need +def, and you need the stam increase from the quest items above, go ahead and pick up these items and then hit the AH for Vindicator's armor kits for the +8 def rating. Also, if you've hit at least Honored with Aldor, you can pick up +8 dodge for your shoulders, though I decided to go with +15 SP for mine so I didn't have to worry as much about +SP on the rest of my gear.
I do have to say, since getting the gear upgrades from the Nexus quests, I can definitely tell the difference. There are some mobs that don't seem to be able to touch me at all (though, admittedly, they're level 69s) and I was able to solo all of the group quests for D.E.H.T.A. with only minimal assistance on Harold Lane (I would have taken him solo too, if it weren't for that meddling Human).
I am saddened, however, by the gear drops from the bosses in Nexus. Two of the drops were useless (for a tank) plate and Kerastranza dropped a dagger. Our PuG wound up DE'ing every boss drop.
Sparkius Nov 17th 2008 2:34PM
This is a fabulous article. I did something like this for my rogue main, but what a huge time saver if I could find articles like this for some of my alts. How about a write-up like this for hunters, druids, mages, warlocks, etc? Not necessarily leveling guides, but just straight gear write-ups like this.
Really great stuff!
Vanger Nov 19th 2008 2:01AM
If you're protection paladin then forget about quest rewards. Get yourself the Tempered Cobalt armor "set" made by Blacksmithing.
My tankadin was clad in pre-raiding blues and when I got the Tempered Cobalt set my hp was a little bit higher (mind you, no enchants were on the set!), my defense went up from 492 to 533, AP from 500-600 to 1100+.
I'm not commenting on the retributor advice in the article, as I think a ret paladin has only to stack STR (or AP) and crit. Stamina is nice but only needed really for soloing Elites.
jon Nov 24th 2008 10:11PM
mind making one with holy/healing? i dont really need crit and was wondering if i could find any plate for healers...
