15-year-old collapses after playing Wrath for hours on no sleep or food
Reader Danny sent us this article from Obviously, it's a stretch to blame this on the game -- doing anything for 15 hours straight with no sleep or food won't be good for your health. There were millions of people who played this very same game this weekend (some probably even for the same amount of time or more) and had no problems at all -- they realize that to stay healthy, you take breaks, get sleep, and eat healthy. But this kid (and his parents) didn't do things correctly, and as a result, he ended up in the hospital.
Hopefully the kid's all right, and the parents have learned their lesson: they have decided to limit his time in front of the computer, which is exactly what they should do if he can't limit it himself. The article ends by saying that "teenagers" around the world are playing the new expansion, except that the average age of gamers is now up to just under 30, and the average World of Warcraft player is actually older than that. Fortunately, the vast majority of them know how to enjoy the game and stay safe and healthy at the same time.
Update: As our commenters point out, this story's been picked up by English news sites around the net, including The Local, Mail Online, and the Times Online. Additionally, the use of "Halland," below, is sic -- Google's translator spelled it that way, not us. We're now being told there is a place in Sweden called Halland, and that this happened there, not in Holland.
Here's the text of the article, translated into English by Google Translator:
A 15-year-old boy in Halland was taken to hospital after having spent a day in front of the new World of Warcraft. Food-and lack of sleep in front of the computer led to that he was cramping. Now warns his father others.

Yes it is Blizzard's fault.
Video games are the devil! I played Bejeweled for 20 mins straight and I wanted to take a high powered rifle to the top of a clock tower.
F0REM4N Nov 17th 2008 3:55PM
This is not Blizzard's fault. This kid shows a clear lack of conditioning. Let's look at the facts.
Two hours of sleep? That is overkill, borderline slacking.
No food!? No nearby Doritos (or your munchy of choice). That is criminal. As the Boy Scouts say, "Be Prepared"
Went down after 15 hours!? He brings shame to geeks everywhere. I am saddened by this lack of commitment.
conker87 Nov 17th 2008 4:01PM
He was being sarcastic.
Guido666 Nov 17th 2008 4:04PM
He collapsed after only 15 hours of not sleeping? OMG! So normally he gets more than 9 hours of sleep per day? I would say the fact that this kid collapsed so easily is a worse symptom than that he collapsed at all.
After 15 hours of not eating/drinking/sleeping, you should be a little dehydrated YES, starving NO, sleep deprived NO, and DEFINATELY NOT collapse.
Clasifyd Nov 17th 2008 4:06PM
Ya know, I would more expect a headline in the following day's newspaper to read, "Terrible parents taken to jail for being terrible parents."...
Seriously, control the heathen you call your child.
Fugmug Nov 17th 2008 4:16PM
No - F0REM4N is quite right.
This is a case of improper absentee parenting.
If you're going to ignore your child, it must be done in the correct manner. Clearly the parents did not cover their bases and left themselves open to blame on this, this simply will not do.
They should have set the teenager up with a mini-fridge and plenty of rebull and sugary treats bought with cash. In the main fridge of the house should be milk, juice, and fruit for denial later.
Also, they should pay one of the more attractive females in his school to text him whenever he starts nodding off. Something along the lines of how hot she thinks his level 80 gnome will be. Nothing like a jolt of hormones to keep one awake.
And things get really dire, you can hire someone who went through reform school for bullying as a minor (and is thus currently a maniac with a clean record, making it simple to feign ignorance later) to do your babysitting.
However, I do have to applaud the parents on their disaster recovery PR work.
If you're caught not feeding and ignoring your child for a good portion of an entire weekend, blaming the video game and giving lectures 'warning other parents' is a great way to spin it like you're some kind of hero.
Hebdap Nov 17th 2008 4:30PM
Conker, so was he :D
Alkaios Nov 17th 2008 4:39PM
If he didn't hit 80, then this is FAIL.
If he hit 80, and THEN passed out, he's a trooper.
Just an opinion =)

We have been disgraced. This kid is pathetic. I'm awake for more than 20 hours a day sometimes. I don't collapse from exhaustion. Now, maybe if he had played some music, gotten some pop and water, and some potato chips, he would have been better, but come on! 15 hours? Worthless...
He had better have gotten AT LEAST level 76. If not, we need to take him out back and remove him from the gaming world.

Halland, being a county in Sweden, is not located in the Netherlands.
Furthermore, the kids was a dork and Aftonbladet is possibly the worst source of information you can get in Sweden. It's so full of gossip and "shock and awe" type coverage that it's best use is in the bottom of your kitty-litter.
I'll translate the article for you, being a Swede and all, but google does a fair job.
====
A 15 year old boy in Halland (Sweden) was rushed to the hospital after sitting 24 h with the new World of Warcraft game. Food and sleep depravation caused the boy to experience cramps. His father now send a word of warning to other parents.
- I want to warn other parents and kids about this, says the father to Kvällsposten (The evening post).
The boy and six of his friends met up on Saturday evening to play the newly-released WotLK. During a 24h period the boy only got 2 h of sleep and a small breakfast infront of the computer. Around 14 o clock on the Sunday the boy collapsed.
"We were terrified"
The cramps were reminiscent of a seizure, so the family alerted SOS Alarm (the swedish 911). The boy was brought by ambulance to the Halmstad (in Halland, Sweden) hospital wher he recieved fluid and nutrition intravenously.
- We were terrified, but he is allright, the father says to the press.
The Doctors daignosis was that the boy was knocked out from a combination of focused gamin, sleep depravation and a lack of nutrition. The boy got to stay over night to recover some lost sleep. Has to play less (yes the sentence is formulated that poorly).
Now both parents have decided that the boy must limit his playtime. They have also spoken to his friends, who will also cut back on their playing.
Meanwhile, teenagers across the world will play WoW like never before. The latest version of the game is expected to break an all time sales record for games.

I agree with F0REM4N... 15hours before collapse is poor. Never stayed up that long for WoW, but I have had to on multiple occasions for college essays due the very next day, keeping me up all night and then throughout lectures the next day. I am usually like a zombie that time, sustained by caffeine. Maybe we should ban essay deadlines?
I always eat though... what kind of person forgets to eat o.O that doesn't even make any sense. Unless he was doing this secretly, and he was worried if he made a trip to the kitchen his parents would bust him. Still though... you could at least have a pack of crisps or something that doesn't interrupt the game. I hope they don't have compulsory military service in his country or he'll be screwed. With that kind of endurance / life preservation skills.
Avrsion Nov 17th 2008 3:06PM
That it? I've played WoW upto 46 hours none stop in the past. Fortunately i've given up that kind of habbit and i'm living life in the "real world" alot more.
Marc Sadowski Nov 17th 2008 3:10PM
You know, you're right. 15 hours for a 15 year old should be nothing... maybe he spent too much time in one of those hash bars they're famous for.
zappo Nov 17th 2008 3:10PM
Yeah, China has already had at least 2 game related fatalities (not sure it was WoW though) so I remain unimpressed.
Aigarius Nov 17th 2008 3:58PM
True, but to keep up on a long stint you have to know how to feed your body for it - you need to have plenty of water (up to 5 liters for each 24 hours), vitamin supplements (up to double daily dose) and food that is easy to digest (salads and soups work well). One must never forget to take a significant quantity of fat of any type with food just before taking vitamins, because most vitamins are only soluble in fat.
With proper hydration, food, bathroom breaks and general mobility breaks at least once an hour, longer stints (no more than 48 hours) are not generally harmful to a healthy body.
benicrystal Nov 17th 2008 5:05PM
30 hours is my record. I was sick ( And they never found out what it was ), so bad I couldn't leave my room. So I had someone come over and bring me food for the day, camped at my puter chair and played like I had never played before.
My second best is 26 hours, when I had surgery on my hand; And yes, it's possible to pwn in such situations, even with just a 1 hander. ( Hehe )
But the kid seriously needs to much on something. Stale toast can even keep you a bit satisfied for a good while. And a human being can live up for I think 2 weeks without food, all you need is H2O.
Toucan Nov 17th 2008 3:06PM
The article is from Sweden. The Halland in the article must be a region. Hey, I know you guys love having your fans share news, but a simple search on Warcraft in Google News had this story listed first or second at of 10:30 EST this morning, including various UK newspapers on-line.
Busilak Nov 17th 2008 3:12PM
Yep, I clinked on the link and was expecting Dutch, but it was in Swedish.
Halland is apparently a county in Sweden, according to Wikipedia. It's southwest of Stockholm and southeast of the Howling Fjords of Norway.
Shin Nov 17th 2008 5:11PM
Another dutch guy to confirm this statement. No dutch sites seem to have reported this before the Swedish newspaper and the hospital is definetely not a dutch hospital.
Halland is not Holland.
Marc Sadowski Nov 17th 2008 3:07PM
At least it wasn't that music television.
Seriously, when will parents do some parenting.
