15-year-old collapses after playing Wrath for hours on no sleep or food
Reader Danny sent us this article from Obviously, it's a stretch to blame this on the game -- doing anything for 15 hours straight with no sleep or food won't be good for your health. There were millions of people who played this very same game this weekend (some probably even for the same amount of time or more) and had no problems at all -- they realize that to stay healthy, you take breaks, get sleep, and eat healthy. But this kid (and his parents) didn't do things correctly, and as a result, he ended up in the hospital.
Hopefully the kid's all right, and the parents have learned their lesson: they have decided to limit his time in front of the computer, which is exactly what they should do if he can't limit it himself. The article ends by saying that "teenagers" around the world are playing the new expansion, except that the average age of gamers is now up to just under 30, and the average World of Warcraft player is actually older than that. Fortunately, the vast majority of them know how to enjoy the game and stay safe and healthy at the same time.
Update: As our commenters point out, this story's been picked up by English news sites around the net, including The Local, Mail Online, and the Times Online. Additionally, the use of "Halland," below, is sic -- Google's translator spelled it that way, not us. We're now being told there is a place in Sweden called Halland, and that this happened there, not in Holland.
Here's the text of the article, translated into English by Google Translator:
A 15-year-old boy in Halland was taken to hospital after having spent a day in front of the new World of Warcraft. Food-and lack of sleep in front of the computer led to that he was cramping. Now warns his father others.
- I want to warn other young people and parents, "says the father to the Evening Post.
The boy and his six friends met on Saturday night to play the nysläppta Wrath of the Lich King. In one day, it was only two hours sleep and a small breakfast in front of the computer. At 14 o'clock on Sunday, the boy collapsed.
Seizures reminded on an epileptic seizure as the family alerted SOS. The boy was taken by ambulance to Halmstads hospital where he received his fluid and nutrition drip.
- We were terrified proposed, but he is out of danger," said the father to the newspaper.
The diagnosis was that the boy was eliminated in a combination of concentrated gaming, sleep deprivation and poor nutrition. The boy had to stay overnight and take back their lost sleep.
Now, the two parents that the boy must limit their time in front of the computer. They have talked with friends who also will cut down on their computer gaming.
At the same time, teenagers around the world to play World of Warcraft as never before. The latest version of the game expected to hit all-time Sales for the game.

When politicians start blaming them, rather than blaming a million other things which have nothing to do with it.
mcclary Nov 17th 2008 3:07PM
That night in the hospital is really gonna set him back on his quest to 80.
I think nutrition drip is going to be the next revolution in endurance gaming.

You and me both man... Let me tell you... I was dying laughing at google's translation (not at the facts, just the way the words were translated)... the boy was "eliminated" and then he went and had to "take back" his sleep... hahahaha... It almost sounds like some kind of over-dramatized aggressive event... an epic struggle between a boy and a video game, where the boy lost... But I guess that's typical for a newspaper anyway...
Hebdap Nov 17th 2008 4:56PM
Oh man, that mistranslation is great. It's pretty hilarious how meaning changes around. I can hear that Unreal Tournament voice that says "Rampage" saying the kid has been "eliminated".
Google Translate is near-endless entertainment, especially at work (with web blockers). Try translating - anything - from English to Portuguese to Norwegian to Japanese to Vietnamese to Korean to Latvian and then back to English.
It's like playing Telephone with people who spent two weeks learning their neighbor's language. Oh linguistics, how fickle you are.

This week, you have a problem, our readers were from anonymous consultant. He has a mission for the rich optimal for a variety of options at this time of high population and most of the camp I want to know:
The number of blogs, to prevent Ninjaing was a story about people, but I cut him, I do not have moisture. , Consider the following: Borean from the tundra, and the island is top of the stairs had to kill a man in the morning. Occasionally, some 10 people, "Comics is waiting around. I, or they arrive First, I do not know. Man, the first time in recent / s or more," Can I join the group? Yes, I am active in any way to be together all the time, he no longer line of people that the system does not recognize, and I do not know what to do, said. I wonder?
Um. I also wonder...

ROFL Hebdap, that is brilliant!
hoeding Nov 17th 2008 3:08PM
This just in: While playing video games is not physically exerting, the human body requires food and water to operate!
File this in with darwin awards, imo.
Heremod Nov 17th 2008 11:26PM
I remember when something similar happened to me. I went on a 3 mile bike ride up hill after having not enough sleep and going 16 hours without eating or drinking and not drinking much if any water the day before when I was riding my bike, because I didn't want to stop to go inside to get a drink of water.
And thousands of kids are outside, riding bicycles and playing and not drinking enough water right now!
MisterMoose Nov 17th 2008 3:52PM
He isn't dead or infertile, so he hasn't eliminated himself from the gene pool. Hence he hasn't "earned" a Darwin award.
That said, I've been given the book twice as a gift, but I still find the whole concept of being amused at someone's stupid death deeply disturbing. Seems cruel and overly callous to me.
Tyranor Nov 17th 2008 3:09PM
15 hours? Weakling....
Seriously though, show some responsibility when you play WoW...don't doom us all to criticism from the world's press when you go and injure yourself stupidly.
mr.gerbz Nov 17th 2008 3:13PM
We from Holland (or, The Netherlands) do NOT sound like "hurdy gurdy burdy murdy", nor do we write like that! >:[
zappo Nov 17th 2008 3:17PM
and yet you use a name like mr.gerbz... interesting.
MacGyver Nov 17th 2008 3:22PM
Haha, I immediately got a mental picture of that Swedish chef from the Muppets.
Anyway, it's Holland (better yet: The Netherlands), not Halland..
Amai Nov 17th 2008 3:27PM
i'm not sure anyone said you did....and if you're referring to the wording of the story, keep in mind it was a google translation. any google translation from any language sounds weird, it's not going to be perfect.
Xtian Nov 17th 2008 3:29PM
@ MacGyver -
Actually, the boy is a Swede from Halland, a region in Sweden.
@ article -
I agree with other fact-checkers in the comments: articles about this are all over the net this morning, yet WowInsider is so far the only journalist that I've read to report it as a Dutch instead of a Swedish thing. Props for picking up on Wow-related news, but facts, yes? The internet is crazy these days, what with its google searches and confirm stuff before you post it nonsense.
MacGyver Nov 17th 2008 3:42PM
@ Xtian
I know. I was pointing out the big difference between Holland and Halland.
@ Article
Those parents need to be blamed. Not the 15 year old kid. He barely got out of his pooper-pants.
Jack Spicer Nov 17th 2008 3:16PM
Oh snap! Doctor Phil and Tyra are going to be all over this.
jay Nov 17th 2008 3:37PM
I'll bet, Dr Phil is a douche and Tyra... well, what can I say, anyone who takes her advice needs to have their head read she's a freaking old model turned talk show host, she holds no official qualification to be even offering any sort of advice.
Ichigo Nov 17th 2008 3:17PM
Piss poor parenting FTL.
Package Nov 17th 2008 3:19PM
What type of parents don't watch and see what their 15 yr old child is doing for 15 hours?
While it is easy I think to try and blame the parents, honestly what 15 yr old kid FORGETS to eat? When I was 15 I was eating everything in sight and was still hungry. Sigh...maybe that's why i'm a fatty now. God, now I'm all sad...I'm going to go eat a big brick of cheese and cry myself to sleep.
Lyraat Nov 17th 2008 3:18PM
15 hours of WoW = easy
15 hours without food = easy but why would you want to?
15 hours without using the bathroom = apparently, the kid uses diapers
