15-year-old collapses after playing Wrath for hours on no sleep or food
Reader Danny sent us this article from Obviously, it's a stretch to blame this on the game -- doing anything for 15 hours straight with no sleep or food won't be good for your health. There were millions of people who played this very same game this weekend (some probably even for the same amount of time or more) and had no problems at all -- they realize that to stay healthy, you take breaks, get sleep, and eat healthy. But this kid (and his parents) didn't do things correctly, and as a result, he ended up in the hospital.
Hopefully the kid's all right, and the parents have learned their lesson: they have decided to limit his time in front of the computer, which is exactly what they should do if he can't limit it himself. The article ends by saying that "teenagers" around the world are playing the new expansion, except that the average age of gamers is now up to just under 30, and the average World of Warcraft player is actually older than that. Fortunately, the vast majority of them know how to enjoy the game and stay safe and healthy at the same time.
Update: As our commenters point out, this story's been picked up by English news sites around the net, including The Local, Mail Online, and the Times Online. Additionally, the use of "Halland," below, is sic -- Google's translator spelled it that way, not us. We're now being told there is a place in Sweden called Halland, and that this happened there, not in Holland.
Here's the text of the article, translated into English by Google Translator:
A 15-year-old boy in Halland was taken to hospital after having spent a day in front of the new World of Warcraft. Food-and lack of sleep in front of the computer led to that he was cramping. Now warns his father others.
- I want to warn other young people and parents, "says the father to the Evening Post.
The boy and his six friends met on Saturday night to play the nysläppta Wrath of the Lich King. In one day, it was only two hours sleep and a small breakfast in front of the computer. At 14 o'clock on Sunday, the boy collapsed.
Seizures reminded on an epileptic seizure as the family alerted SOS. The boy was taken by ambulance to Halmstads hospital where he received his fluid and nutrition drip.
- We were terrified proposed, but he is out of danger," said the father to the newspaper.
The diagnosis was that the boy was eliminated in a combination of concentrated gaming, sleep deprivation and poor nutrition. The boy had to stay overnight and take back their lost sleep.
Now, the two parents that the boy must limit their time in front of the computer. They have talked with friends who also will cut down on their computer gaming.
At the same time, teenagers around the world to play World of Warcraft as never before. The latest version of the game expected to hit all-time Sales for the game.

And some kid died when he ran away from home because his dad took away his Xbox.
The children of today are retards.

Funny thing is, if he had just been watching TV for 15 hours straight and had an epileptic fit, nobody would care. Well, him and his parents obviously, but it's wouldn't get picked up and spread all over the interwebs. Everybody would realize that he probably already was prone to that sort of thing, and the TV watching only triggered it. But because he was playing a video game... well by golly, he was perfectly healthy, and WoW killed him!

The kid should have been munching on a big bag of those Swedish gummi fish as he played. What kid would deny himself sugar AND video games?
Elmo Nov 17th 2008 4:22PM
AND of course politics will pick this up as games beeing evil

This didn't happen in Holland. It happened in Sweden, and the text is in Swedish obviously. You probably mixed up the place Halland (in Sweden) with Holland. I managed to find an English version of a Swedish news magazine.

it's people like this that gives MMO a bad name, dont let this idiot ever play again until he turns 21
Daniel Nov 17th 2008 4:28PM
Is this even a true story? Google News shows no other sources picking it up, and it's rather strange that major Dutch news channels aren't communicating this.
Vinter Nov 17th 2008 7:34PM
That's because it happened in Sweden, as others have pointed out.

Oompa loompa doopity-doo,
I've got another puzzle for you.
Oompa loompa doopity-dee,
If you were wise you'd listen to me.
Wrath is a game that is much fun to play.
Some go for hours, maybe even a day.
Hot Pockets give you nutrition to game,
Going without them's real-ly lame!
(Fainting sometimes follows...)
Oompa-loompa doopity-doo,
While you are playing, eat and drink, too!
Oompa-loompa doopity-dee,
Once in a while, get up and go pee.

stuff like this happens all the time, though this time it is different.
is WOW to blame? i say yes. by making server first achievements. this kid could have gotten up if he wanted to, but was obviously working toward something. that specific achievement.
though if always isn't harmful to mention that if you are experiencing pains while playing, it's probably time to take a break.
Arkkoran Nov 17th 2008 5:15PM
"this kid could have gotten up if he wanted to, but was obviously working toward something. that specific achievement. "
Uh, no. This isn't why he passed out. EVERY SINGLE PLAYER is working toward something. That's the entire point of the game. They aren't passing out, only he did.

Yet another case of a stupid person doing a stupid thing. At least if he's sane he's learned not to do it again. Seriously, who can actually think that they can sustain 15 hours of activeness on 2 hours of sleep? Even after he experienced cramps he chose to keep going. This person is obviously a moron.

i have one thing to say. wow. i have done this countless times, and i have yet to passout. i would like to see what this kid looks like. i bet he's 300lbs of lard and lazyness.
stuff like this does blows my mind. yes i want to hit 80, and yes i have been playing for countless hours. but i still stop to get a drink or a snack. if he was smart, he would keep a mini-fridge next to his computer like i do.
Willypiggy Nov 18th 2008 2:51AM
Heh, I did a 16 hour stretch with only a 2litre bottle of lemonade as my only drink the whole day, It was soooo worth it, the thing about it is you need to know your bodys limits, I can go a whole day without eating and drinking because I have done it before - if you have your mind on other things its easy to forget etc. If you know your body can't take 20 hours without sleeping then don't go 20-hours without sleeping, simple as.

Thats sad, sometimes people just take things too far. I am pretty thankful that when I was 15 my parents would have probably called me out, made sure I ate and what not. They always have been cool with all my nerdy habits. But I am pretty sure even on a 15 hour binge my dad would have rolled in with a gatorade and some chips or something for me just to make sure I was good. Its a two way street, its sad though that some people can't step away from the computer.
Tyrrax Nov 17th 2008 4:49PM
On the funny side this is weaksauce. When I played EQ I once had a 18 hour CR in Plane of Fear.
And if there are any doubters to what hardcore is I have just one word: Ragefire.
Zorrath Nov 17th 2008 5:35PM
LOL I was up for 27 hours grinding from thursday afternoon to friday evening. And im 30. :P
Though I would say i had food to eat, plenty of water and atleast stratched out once and awhile.
Vatti Nov 17th 2008 4:54PM
Where were his parents.
That is all.

This is one of those cases where an single anecdote tries to outweigh the statistics.
Yes, prolonged periods of inactivty, sleep deprivation and dehydration are bad for you. However, millions of people have bought the expansion pack worldwide. At least several hundred thousand player are spending 12+ hours a day in the game; certainly the players who've hit 80 on my realm have.
So, out of the several hundred thousand people playing for extended periods of time, one was hospitalized for exhaustion and dehydration.
