WoW Insider speaks with Nymh, world first level 80

The first of many firsts was Nymh, world first player to level 80. WoW Insider had an opportunity to talk to him directly about his journey to level 80, and just what inspired it. Read on to see what he (and we) had to say!
WoW Insider: Hi, Nymh! Thank you for doing this, and congratulations again on being the world first level 80. First, why don't you tell us a little about yourself. I'm sure you've had to do this in all of your interviews already, but once more can't hurt!
Nymh: Hello! In short, I'm 21 and I'm actually working for the French Administration.
WoW Insider: Now, why you decide to do this? Was it your goal to be world first or just to level as quickly as possible?
Nymh: It was not really intended! The original goal was to find a way to level as fast as possible, because I knew it was not possible for me to stay awake for days without sleeping. I had a good template and a good spot to grind that I found on beta, and I calculated that it would take something like 28 hours to go to 80. Definitely, a world first was something I could reach, but it was not really expected.
WoW Insider: You've mentioned that you only really play WoW for the raid content, and don't particularly like questing or leveling up. What will you be doing until people start to catch up to you? Grinding reputation? Tradeskills? Just taking a few days off of the game?
Nymh: Well, my guildies leveled really fast too, we've actually already have cleared all the 10 players raids (except Malygos), and we will start 25 player raids tonight! So the wait was not terrible, but to answer your question, I spend a lot of time... answering questions!
WoW Insider: Obviously there are some people who have been rather negative about your world first, but we've seen a lot of people congratulating you on it, too. Would you say the overall reaction is more positive or more negative in general? How do you feel about the "get a life" comments?
Nymh: I think it is globally equal, maybe more positive than negative, but I do not really pay attention to comments... I've not done this to be recognized, I've done this for myself and my guild. So I really don't care about people saying I should get a life or stuff like that, because they really don't know me and saying things like that just because I was able to grind 27 hours is really stupid.
WoW Insider: Zach Yonzon, one of our Warlocks on staff, was curious about the spec that you used. Did you custom build your version of SL/SL to help your leveling grind along, or is it a spec you feel will be viable past that? Will you continue to use it? Do you think it would have performed well if you didn't have a healer on your side?
Nymh: The original idea of the spec was from Jynxx, Fusion guild, she made a post about a spec that has no downtime, can pull any number of mobs... I tested it and that really was the case, and I was asking myself, "What if I found a spot with unlimited numbers of monsters to pull..." I found Drakil'Jin ruins 2 hours after. Since then, the Drakil'jin Ruins have been hotfixed by Blizzard so the mobs do not give any XP.
I planned to grind as 21/41/0, but I changed my mind few hours before and decided to take Metamorphosis instead, because I had no use for Siphon Life thanks to my healer. I respecced at level 77 to take Grim Reach, Empowered Corruption and Shadow Mastery, it was way more useful than the Meta at that level.
This spec works wonders for farming/questing/grinding. I'm pretty sure it kicks ass in PvP too, as I was ganked by many Horde players on beta but I've never died with this spec. Without Pavelomm, I would be forced to use Siphon Life, sometimes AOE fear... I think I would have grinded the 10 levels in about 40 hours instead of 26.

How can someone like Athene? Act or not (oh god I wish it's an act), he's got a very obnoxious personality.
Verit Nov 18th 2008 1:44PM
You don't have to like him to realize that Blizzard was rather unfair to him - check out his play by play explanation for what they did and planned and what blizzard did to them on his website.
Personally if a GM said what I was doing was ok, then we did it, and then a GM said it wasn't ok and rolled my character back to 70 I'd probably be done with WoW - especially if a plucky warlock on a french server essentially did the same thing and didn't get in trouble at all.
I work in customer support (technical support) as a tier 3 - and we have to honor what our lower level techs say to our customers - even if we were wrong. Blizzard should do the same.

First?

I've been wondering, is this the same guy as this suspect leveling guide that is on every warcraft site's banner ads?
http://www.nyhmswarcraftguides.com/ ?
Alex Ziebart Nov 17th 2008 8:15PM
It's not the guy that does the guides or the music videos. This is someone else completely.
Duck Knight Nov 17th 2008 8:22PM
Also, the music video Nyhm has stated he is not affiliated with the leveling guide guy, saying that the guy is trying to get rich off his name. ಠ_ಠ

Grats on level 80. I have a question for you... After you have cleared all of the game content do you continue to play? I have taken it slowly as to always have something to look forward too.

Yeah, we eat up new content. But in making it to 80 so fast, did he really 'experience' it? Or more likely blow past it all just to be first to 80?
Alex Ziebart Nov 17th 2008 8:18PM
Remember that he was in beta. : ) He's seen all of the content pre-raids already. So he pretty much just skipped something he did already.
Jane Gray Nov 17th 2008 10:41PM
Didn't you read? He didn't "experience" anything but grinding that one area.
He probably saw everything he wanted to see in beta anyway.
Xenite Nov 17th 2008 8:44PM
And yet I still fail to care... Sad actually that this is how we measure success, Someone sitting in front of their computer for 3 days straight. Congrats on needing a life. :)
Bunker Nov 17th 2008 9:07PM
You cared enough to post about him, amirite?
Sounds like someone is a little bit jealous
draeth Nov 17th 2008 9:37PM
3 days = 72 hours
it didnt take him HALF of that to get to 80.
Everyone should stop trying to make this guy out to be such a waste of life, anyone with a job/gf/life can take a few days off to grind some mobs, he is not the embodiment of South Park's Make Love Not Warcraft and we should stop portraying him in that light.
Kyle Nov 17th 2008 9:00PM
As much as Athene is annoying as hell, he pretty much owned Nymh. Nymh was double Athene's time , nuff said.
Kemikalkadet Nov 18th 2008 5:04AM
As i understand it Athene exploited a loophole with degrouping in instances so he got all the mob exp? whereas nymh used non-instanced mobs. That's how blizzard could say tht he exploited his levels while mobs out in the world are fair game.
I could be completely wrong, just something i heard.
bumble Nov 18th 2008 6:25AM
and got reset to 70 for exploiting /lol
John C Nov 18th 2008 2:32PM
Actually it was not Athene who was powerleveling. Athene basically planned what they were going to do and then helped do it with another guy in his guild. And the "exploitation" of mob tagging has been well known for a while and Athene even contacted blizzard beforehand to see if it was ok and blizzard said it was fine. Blizzard decided later on that they were level too fast and banned them (Temp ban) and reset the guy back to 70. You should watch Athene's whole explanation of what happened, he goes over everything that they did and how they figured it would be the best way to level. Also Nymh used mob tagging to boost himself as well. So if you just want to say that Athene didn't get it because of clever usage of game mechanics then you would have to say the same for this guy.
Kyle Nov 18th 2008 3:33PM
I agree. I watched the full video. They are both using the same technique, but Athene's group used instanced mobs for more XP. IMO it was just a more clever usage of mob tagging and they deserved the world first. Especially after confirming it with the GMs before they set off on the mission.
Bean Nov 17th 2008 9:07PM
I feel bad for the healer that sat there the entire time, completely selflessly and healed the lock. There was even a comment from Nymh saying that the healer wasn't partied.... so Nymh sits there and hits 80 while the healer sits at 70-71, maybe getting a couple XP here and there.
Really, it's sad that Nymh gets all the credit when it was the healer that really made is possible.
Give credit where credit is due. Pavelomm is sitting at level 71 still, why don't you go back there and let Pavlomm tag all the mobs and then you kill them. It takes no time at all right? Too bad noone was supposed to be able to do it that fast, hence the hotfix.
Seriously though, Pavelomm earned the achievement in my book.
