DeathKnight.info is having
a Death Knight Disease Design contest (say that three times fast) -- they're working on putting together a disease-timer addon for you former slaves of the Lich King, but they need a little design help with it. What you've got to do is take the graphic above (you should probably take the one off of their site, just to be safe, because it's got to be a certain size), and design a way to use it as a disease timer -- it's got to show all the info you'll need in an addon, and it's got to "look awesome," too.
I'm terrible at design, but maybe there are some budding designers out there with some kickass ideas. If you win, not only do you get your ideas included in
the Runes addon, but you will pick up a free 60 day gamecard as well.
Hit up their dev thread if you have questions about how the mod works -- hopefully we'll see some creative entries here when the times come to vote for a winner next month.

I tried this addon out, and thought it was pretty nifty. I imported the graphics into Photoshop to try and make the hilt a little smaller. It looked great in PS but was terribly aliased ingame... I'm not very familiar with how .tga works, I guess.

If you are resizing it, it must stay 512 x 256 dimensions.
I do all my .tga editing in GIMP and never had any aliasing problems.

I dunno, I've been using Runetimer. It's a bit bulky, yet all of these seem to be bulky.

"I'm terrible at design..."
Don't feel bad, the one who made that God-awful design we see here is way worse than you.
"...but they need a little design help with it..."
O RLY? Anything will look better than that piece of shit we see there. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking? They actually released this?

Because obviously your personal taste defines what does and doesn't look good. Obviously.
On to the positive comments.
You can turn the sword graphic off which makes it quite handy and non-obtrusive, and it's a good match with pitbull. I'm looking forward to seeing good disease tracking implemented!

Links to your designs for comparison, please.

Wow, did someone pee in your cereal this morning? Look forward to seeing your designs.

good match with pitbull aesthetically, or is there some combined technology that I'm not aware of. I use it now, but I go to the display without the sword (I don't think the nasty tone of the earlier poster was required, but I do think that sword looks a little crappy and, more importantly, takes up screen space.

Aethetic match. Mostly because I put my portrait/bar maybe 100 pixels above the bottombar, and you can adjust how far the runes slide to show their cooldown/which direction.

You were saying... what exactly?

*grumbles something about touchpads and too big hands*
As I was saying, well you can see the linked UI above. There's a designer you'd want to hire for the job. What you see there is clever use of SunnArt and some poking in Photoshop to create a simply stunning UI. And I happen to know for a fact that this UI is 100% unique, since it hasn't been released for download.
As for runes, my runes are simply alpha-blended icons in my HUD, with cooldowns tracked by OmniCC. Disease tracking? Quartz, that's all you need and it works with all your other classes too.

That's one ugly, bulky, and cluttered UI. Minimalism for the win.

Great idea!
Hopeless in the creative side of life myself, but good luck to all!

Damn it's another one of them contests where you actually have to DO something...
Jon Nov 19th 2008 11:29PM
The original runes were designed by VectorVixen aka WoW Insider's Shelbi Roach (World of Warcrafts). =)
Draenors Nov 20th 2008 3:34AM
Why couldn't Blizzard's development have designed it before the Wrath-release? ;P
kyuuketsuki Nov 20th 2008 1:04PM
The Runehero addon looks WAY better than this. The sword is a mini Frostmourne. I checked out all of these rune-tracking addons and that one was my favorite for design and function. I'm using DoTimer for disease tracking.
As to the UI above; I downloaded the SunnArt addon, but haven't messed with it yet. You just design the graphics and fit your bars/map on top? Can you set up all your UI elements, take a screenshot, and then use that as a reference for positioning?

Look at this too, this is an addon that was just put up, and it'd be awesome if it was somehow added to this amazingly awesome addon. Maybe work together somehow on it?
But it could be put as small symbols underneath or beside the sword, but with the same animation sort of thing (or similar) and same idea... Take a look? :D :D :D
