Living without General chat
I have a confession to make: all the whining, questions, and confusion that's been in General chat for the last few days? I haven't heard any of it. As soon as I logged in after the expansion, I typed "/leave general" and strangely enough, haven't looked back. I usually enjoy General -- it reminds me that I'm not playing a singleplayer game, and most of the comments there, while not really the smartest, are at least pretty entertaining. I figured if you're going to play a game with other people, you might as well give them the opportunity to talk with you.But Northrend has been different -- I didn't want the inane chatter, the constant stream of questions (sometimes answered, usually not), and the occasional desperate requests. I wanted to be in Northrend by myself, more or less, and explore the world as if I wasn't on the same server as thousands of people. And it's been worthwhile, for the most part -- while I've dived back in there once or twice just to check and see if certain quests are bugged for anyone else, I've mostly stayed out of there, and I think it's made the game better.
Some of you will probably think I'm late to the game -- you may have removed the General channel on day one, and the Trade and World Defense channels along with it (I'm keeping the Trade channel, though -- when I am in cities, I kind of appreciate the bustling back and forth, and I've found a few deals in there). For the moment, though, I appreciate a quieter Northrend. No General for me, thanks.

I turned all channels off. Including Guild Chat.
Sorry, I hate spoilers, and my Guild happens to be spoiler happy.

^ This too.
As more of my guild get to 80 more of them get spoiler happy. I know sod all of the questlines and i'd rather not have them spoiled. Nearly had Old Kingdom's final boss spoiled too.

Totally agree, I've had a fair share of Guild tools over time, but I've trusted Guild chat for a little while now.
However, any time my chat resets and since I started playing in 2005-
/leave 1
/leave 2
etc. Lol.

General chat is a barren wasteland on my server. ALL chatting is done on Trade, be it idle chatter or what the channel was intended for.

Must be a pretty terrible guild if you can just leave Gchat. I'd probably think about what you're getting from the guild and what you want from a guild.

Turned off General chat the very first time I learned to do it and I never looked back. Even took off Trade or any channel people abused to try to either sell stuff, chat, or spam people with.
It's nicer and quieter..

I would never do so myself, as you'd miss out on total gems. However a lot of my guild has turned off general due to Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra being Barrens Chat 2.0.

OMG, you're not kidding.
All we need is Chuck Norris to show up, and it will be complete!
darren Nov 19th 2008 7:52PM
Chuck showed up on Tich on day 1 and hasn't left since . . . grrrrrr
Spoonman Nov 19th 2008 8:08PM
Chuck Norris was once on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and was the first to spin. The next 29 minutes of the show consisted of everyone standing around awkwardly, waiting for the wheel to stop.

I haven't been in the General channel or the trade channel in monthes

I found out about the /leave command at about lvl 30 on my first toon and always make sure to leave general, trade, and LD. On my server.. though an RP server.. all three of them are pretty much the general channel.

First thing I do is leave general and trade chat...
Calybos Nov 19th 2008 8:18PM
But without Trade chat, how will anyone ever find a group?
Andostre Nov 19th 2008 7:11PM
Using just Blizzard's base UI, I made a seperate chat window, and moved it to the right of my screen, above my bags. In this new chat window, I put the General, /yell, and BG chat channels, as well as notifications about rep gain and skill ups. In my left chat channel, I left /whispers, monster emotes and yells, and the party, raid, and guild chat channels.
The left window is my important window for when I want to notice if someone is talking, and the right window is there if I need it (even if it's just to be entertained by Gen chat), but it's usually ignored.
That works well for me.

I actually like that idea so much that I'm gonna implement it as soon as I log back in. I hadn't even thought of that.
On a completely unrelated note, that screenshot has Swedish in it! (which is especially appropriate considering I was just putting off my Swedish homework to check WoWInsider)

I'm so glad you posted this so I don't have to. The only thing I find stupider then general chat are the people who think they need to actually /leave and /join constantly when they want to use those features. No offense, but this is probably one of the crappier articles I've seen on WoW Insider. Seems like random moaning without a real solution if you ask me.
I've been using the built in UI to hide trade and general for the past 2 years it seems, and it works great. I can't believe how many people just look at things in such all or nothing terms.
Anyway, thanks for posting the information in your comment, shame probably most of the people who could use this info clearly don't read/explore things to their full potential and won't check out the comments.

I have something similar above my bags, but differently configured: I created a "Chat" window that has the following:
* Party
* Battleground/Raid
* Guild and guild officer
* Whispers
This way I can follow conversations easily: typically it's guild chat and whispers, with the occasional party chat.
When I'm questing, in instances, or BGs, I flip the left tab to Combat Text. Otherwise I leave it in General.
Anowscar Nov 19th 2008 8:26PM
I've been doing something similar for years, and thus have no problems with General, Trade, etc. It's always nice to leave it open just in case something pops in that is useful to you.
