Totem Talk: Dragonblight and Azjol-Nerub
Okay, I admit it: my experiment with 2h exnhancement lasted until I got a fist weapon I liked. My threat was too bursty, my DPS too low and I really missed being able to play with Lava Lash. I'm currently running slow/slow with Windfury Weapon on both, but once I have tine to sit down and really look at the numbers I may switch to Flametongue on the offhand for the benefit to Maelstrom Weapon procs like Chain Lightning.Since I myself am finally done with Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra, I thought this week would be a good one to look at the gear you can get while questing in Dragonblight or running one of its two instances, Azjol-Nerub or Ahn'katet. As is usually the case for this column, we won't be going over every green item that drops... you'll stumble across those in your leveling push and there's a lot of them... but we'll do our best to cover drops for all three specs both in the instances and through general questing.
Dragonblight has some of the best lore-related quests in the game. Since I'm focusing my leveling efforts on my alliance warrior and horde shaman, I may have missed some quests from either faction but I've made my best effort to be comprehensive. Please feel free to mention anything I didn't catch in the comments.
General Quest Rewards
It's fair to say that one of the reasons I ended up in Dragonblight was that there are several quest blues available that really benefit an enhancement shaman. Not that my intent was to leave healer/caster shamans out, but the blue drops in this zone seem to heavily favor physical DPS mail, most likely due to its being shared with hunters. There are caster drops, however. For example: First off is the Horde-specific quest Do Unto Others, which unlike its Alliance counterpart (My Old Enemy) rewards us with a variety of blue items. The mail wrists available through this quest are the caster oriented Wristguards of the Remorseful. With the critical strike rating and lack of MP5, they're more likely aimed at Elemental Combat than Restoration.
Enhancement shamans will be looking at the Treads of the Valiant Struggle, with a large dose of stamina as well as agility and AP. Similarly, both Alliance and Horde can pick up the Links of RIghteous Persecution. I'm not sure what's up with the name on that belt, but the stats are solid enough.
There are good mail options for both caster and physical DPS in Dragonblight for leg armor, in both Alliance and Horde flavors. Horde get the Warchiefls Leggings of Valor and the Warchiefls Leggings of Foresight, while King Varian hands out Wrynn's Leggings of Foresight and Valor. In the process, this awesome, can be used by anyone who likes crit trinket can also be obtained. That heal ability is pretty useful while leveling.
I wanted to cover some trinkets that, while not being blue, are still pretty solid. First up is the Thunder Capacitor, which all elemental shamans should be looking at. It's available from a quest that also rewards a solid melee trinket: in both trinket's case I think they're well worth looking at for a leveling shaman. The Thunder Capacitor in particular is not only superior to the Karazhan drop many elemental shamans used, it can be used with it and a proc on one of the trinkets will stack the buff of the other.
Alliance shamans can also complete this quest and pick up a solid haste rating trinket with both equip and on-use haste. As far as I know it's pure haste, works for both melee and spells.
I admit that I was a bit disappointed in the paucity of mail drops in the instances. Sure, there are cloth and leather alternatives, but I never really like recommending them especially with all the work Blizz has gone through trying to make mail more appealing. Still, if you do all that work and then don't put much mail in the instances, there's not much shamans can do but pick up whatever drops. I've done runs where I was the only one who could even wear leather aside from the paladin or warrior tank who didn't want it. (And one run with three DK's and a mage, to be fair, where we were just throwing the DPS cloth at that mage like it had been soiled by elder gods.)
Azjol-Nerub
I actually like Azjol-Nerub quite a lot as an instance: it's short and has good variety in its encounters, and the Hadronox fight is one of my favorites (it can be a little buggy, though, apologies but that's the best word to describe it) - some of the drops of interest to shamans are not mail, unfortunately, but that's what happens sometimes.
I was a little sad to note that almost no caster weapons seem to drop here, and not much in the way of melee that I found particularly impressive.
Off of Anub'arak himself comes the Wing Cover Girdle, a very solid elemental belt, and one that a proc-dependent restoration shaman might not mind either. The Life-Staff of the Web Lair is not terribly well itemized for a shaman with all that spirit instead of MP5, but if it's better than what you have then it's an upgrade. Simple, I know, but sometimes these things need to be said. The Charmed Silken Cord is cloth, and has less crit and more int than the mail belt that drops off of Anub'arak (the same boss it drops from, in fact) but it, too, is pretty well itemized for a shaman. Hadronox drops these leather caster shoulders, which again aren't optimal for a shaman but I mention them purely on the notion that they might be an upgrade for your offset.
Since I mentioned those, I should mention these cracking-good leather boots which are certainly worth looking at for enhancement. Agi, crit strike, and AP, there's really nothing there I don't like. I'm not saying fight with the rogues and ferals for them, but if they're getting sharded please speak up, they're pretty nice.
Admittedly, while you're leveling up you won't be running these instances on heroic, but we might as well cover their heroic drops now. The Custodian's Chestpiece is pretty dang hot for a melee DPSer with that expertise, even if it is leather. The Facade Shield of Glyphs is a restoration-friendly shield with that MP5. Elemental shamans will be interested in the Ring of the Traitor King. And the Hollowed Mandible Legplates are actual physical DPS mail if you just can't bring yourself to wear leather.
Ahn'katet
A slightly longer instance than its counterpart, Ahn'katet is a fun ride through varying fights that play with the mechanic we're used to from BC raiding. Without spoiling anything, the last fight plays with phasing tech in a manner I wasn't expecting.
Restoration shamans in particular will be excited by the Cloak of the Darkcaster. It has every stat a resto shaman wants and nothing like spirit to bog us down. And if for whatever reason your resto shaman isn't using a shield, there's a solid offhand with MP5 (yay) and spirit (boo) here as well.
Elder Nadox drops these leather gloves. You will be fighting the caster druids for them, because they are perfectly itemized for an elemental shaman. Don't worry, enhancement shamans, you'll get to irritate the leather wearers again as well when you try and grab this belt. It's loaded with agility, haste and AP, and the haste party only continues when the Slasher's Amulet drops.
Finally our enhancement shaman, bloody from fighting with other classes over a belt and a necklace, gets to fight with them some more for a ring. I think we can all agree it's a pretty hot ring for any melee/physical DPS'er.
Heroic drops in this instance include Fiery Obelisk Handguards, Brood Plague Helmet, the Necklace of Talderam, and the Staff of Sinister Claws for casters (all seem more oriented towards elemental than restortaion to my eyes, but the mail helmet has sockets including a meta making it fairly customiize friendly) and the Gauntlets of the Plundering Geist for enhancement.
Next week we'll probably cover the Grizzly Hills and Zul'Drak, including Drak'Tharon and Gundrak.

Your Shaman should level pretty fast...being OP and all.
Angus Nov 20th 2008 2:45PM
Now you aren't even trying very hard at trolling.
Come on, you can do better. Use both those brain cells.
Naix Nov 20th 2008 4:26PM
Troll? Trolls don't give praise about something. They discredit and belittle what ever it is your talking about.
Tyler Nov 20th 2008 1:24PM
Great article... For shamans :)
Now, more loot articles for Spriests!
I will be doing Ahn'Kahet tonight. Not katet.
Prophetik Nov 20th 2008 5:42PM
Seeing as this is the "Totem Talk" article...of course it would concern shaman.
In fact, you really don't even need an article...just go here and see what loot drops: http://www.wowhead.com/?zone=4494

Flametongue on a fast offhand becomes more dps than slow offhand with windfury once you can get 5/5 Elemental Fury from the elemental tree. You actually have a reduced benefit of Maelstrom Weapon with a fast offhand due to the fact that MW is a ppm mechanic, meaning that a slower weapon has a higher % chance to proc due to that weapon hitting fewer times per minute. Instant attacks are not figured into the % chance based on ppm, so an instant attack with a fast weapon has a lesser chance to proc than an instant attack with a slow weapon.
Using 10 ppm as an example (I don't know the actually number for MW):
A 2.6 speed weapon should hit 23 times per minute, 10 of which should be procs, so about a 43% chance to proc per hit.
A 1.4 speed weapon should hit about 43 times per minute, 10 of which should be procs, so about a 23% chance to proc per hit.
Lava Lash and Stormstrike are both instant attacks that you are potentially missing out on MW procs. Also, I believe windfury hits are also supposed to be able to proc MW, and running Flametongue on the offhand eliminates that chance as well.
This potential missed MW procs are surpassed by the increased damage from Flametongue once you can run 5/5 Elemental Fury in the elemental tree on a fast weapon. However, the damage difference can be as little as 100 dps at level 80 with entry level gear, which is less than a 3% difference, meaning that Windfury on a slow offhand is still viable, but will not be the option that min-maxers will want to take.

This is one of those times I wonder how the math works and if it isn't a weapon by weapon basis that you have to make these calls.. cuz if you're getting as you say:
"2.6 speed weapon should hit 23 times per minute, 10 of which should be procs"
and
"1.4 speed weapon should hit about 43 times per minute, 10 of which should be procs"
you're getting 10 procs per minute no matter what and if you have 43 hits with your weapon isn't that a lot better? (assuming you aren't getting parryd, missing, or being blocked)
I mean 43 hits at 23% chance seems better to me than what you're calling a higher percent chance on less hits... less hits generally is less damage done...
I know with my dual wield and a bunch of haste gear I was using, I had some daggers and with flurry and my haste totem down I could get my dagger speed down to .99 which to me was incredibly fast killing. Only downside I found was that my hit rating/expertise was low at first (till i found some ring/trinkets etc. to help) so I'd get like three parrys in a row or get a miss on my stormstrike (grrr!).
Point is... with my dagger speed that fast, are you sure that I should be using slower bigger weapons? I equipped some of the fist weapons from Howling Fjord questing (the ones that look like steel knuckles) but they didn't do damage as fast. I mean the point of enhancement is to kill fast right?

EJ shows WF/WF Slow/Slow as top dog.
Period.
MW is PPM. This means the damage from FT and the spellpower boost will NOT win out over having more MW procs over the same time period. Additionally your off hand is still hitting for less with FT on a fast weapon than with just having a slower one.
Additionally everyone forgets the WF CD and coupling issue. WF has a linked check when off CD.
First it checks main hand, then off-hand.
Net result, each attack has a 36% chance to proc when not on CD.
Take WF off one hand and it becomes a base 20%.
When you stromstrike and WF is off CD you change it from Mid ~60% to 20%. That's a huge loss. If you remove it from lava lash, then you lose another chance to proc it. Even an off-hand proc is better than not having a proc for 1 second.
Slow/Slow WF/WF just accept that Blizzard refuses to make anything else worth it. Lava Lash doesn't do enough even with FT to change that.
William: You aren't getting the actual advantage of slow over fast.
10 are procs on normal attacks.
But, the weapons are given a percentage chance to proc every time they attack. Slower weapons have a bigger percentage.
Seems pretty even right?
Now, you stormstrike every 8 seconds.
The daggers have a much smaller chance to proc MW.
The slow weapons have a bigger chance.
It actually ends up being closer to:
Slow/Slow: 20
Fast/Fast 16
Add that to the entire WF thing above and you see that your burst is WORSE. You hit more often, but for less. You have the same instant attacks as someone with 2 slow weapons, but his hit a LOT harder. So in the same amount of time, they do more damage. WF hits harder, lava lash hits slightly harder, and MW happens more often.
Chuu Nov 20th 2008 3:18PM
You're overcomplicating it.
I'm not saying that slower weapons are better, I'm showing that slower weapons actually trigger Maelstrom Weapon charges faster than a fast weapon.
You're right, it's 10 ppm no matter what your weapon speed is. However that's 10 ppm on white damage attacks, giving the slow weapons a higher percentage chance to proc per hit. This comes into play when you use your instant attacks.
So a Lava Lash with a slow offhand, using the above scenario, will have a 43% chance to proc Maelstrom Weapon in addition to the base 10 ppm from white attacks. A Lava Lash with a fast offhand will only have a 23% chance to proc MW in addition to the base 10 ppm.
43 hits at 23% chance actually is the same as 23 hits at 43% chance, all other things being equal, because you're still getting 10 ppm. It's when you figure in instant attacks that you start to show that you will build MW to 5 stacks slower on average. As stated above, this is offset by the additional damage from Flametongue, among other things.

RE: "EJ shows WF/WF Slow/Slow as top dog.
Period."
This was correct prior to patch 3.0.x and WotLK, and is still correct until some point as you approach level 80 and 5/5 Elemental Fury when Flametongue on a fast offhand begins to win out.
This is discussed in the 151 pages of this thread on EJ: http://elitistjerks.com/f79/t27014-enhancement_wotlk_talents_spells_discussion/
Keep in mind the book on Enhancement is not fully updated yet.

"EJ shows WF/WF Slow/Slow as top dog. Period."
EJ says to use enhsim. Enhsim tells me that for my stats WF/FT Slow/Slow is better than WF/WF. Period. Tested and confirmed on dummies and mobs.
Enhsim. Learn it. Love it.
And seriously, every time I read the shaman column at WI I get the feeling I either don't know my class or the columnist doesn't know the class. FT helping MW crits? Really? How so? FT does @#$? all for MW. WF procs it, FT doesn't add any hits and won't get you any more MW procs than an unenchanted weapon.

I ran UK last night, and the first and third boss both dropped shammy mail. One enhance, one resto.

At least my gf got the leather chest piece from the middle boss.
JuicedCardinal Nov 20th 2008 1:45PM
Don't worry about there not being too much mail at this point. Of the 7 or 8 heroics I've run so far, about 1/3 of it has been mail, with another good bit of it being leather. Maybe it's just my bad luck (I'm a paladin) but don't worry too much!
Sloegin Nov 20th 2008 1:49PM
With my 70 shammy, I'm torn between using ZA enhancement gear to quest, or just trying to lvl as restro healing pugs till im blue in the face.
I won't be using my heroic badge elemental gear that I took 3 months gathering, cause the spec sucks so hard for lvlling atm. It's like grinding teeth compared to lvlling my other alts.
Frogh Nov 20th 2008 2:28PM
Ive levled fine (elemental) with my gear so far. I was only 70 for 3 weeks before LK. I only had a few Kara pieces and never bought any badge gear. I just used a raid/party pve talent spec.
Not as fast as some but good nonetheless.
William Nov 20th 2008 2:43PM
Enhancement is not bad for leveling right now, is it? I'm doing really well... no downtime for mana or food (just pop the wolves for health in tight spots, and pop the shamanistic thingie for mana when you get low, alternating lightning shield and water shield in between...) With the Maelstrom weapon, I almost always can pop an instacast heal and I got two GREAT melee trinkets from questing in Northrend that added over 200 AP when you pop them, and 60-80 AP on equip.
In my experience so far, Enhancement is the easiest way to level, hands down, with Elemental not horrible either, but not the best. Resto is terrible to level with unless you plan on leveling with someone... and I'd reccommend NOT leveling with a prot warrior (viable for leveling my left cheek!)...
William Nov 20th 2008 2:37PM
Matt,
I too went through a phase where I tried 2h enhancement stuff.. we ran Kara and Gorehowl dropped and somehow the warriors etc. that could use it had it already, and so they just gave it to me. (thanks!) So I geared up enhancement and went out to play with it (normally I"m elemental or resto cuz everyone needs healers and Totem of Wrath, but I always go back to enhancement for leveling cuz of the fast killing and not having to worry about getting spell interruptions.. blah blah blah.. back to the topic) Gorehowl when it critted with windfury would almost one-shot level 70 mobs. It was insane... however... it would only do it on every fourth or fifth mob so it was kinda sad. Overall dps was at an alltime low, and despite how cool I looked with it equipped it saddened me to have to give it up in favor of more useful ways of dishing out the hurt. So that's my story.. hope yours turns out better. :D
Derek Clifton Nov 20th 2008 6:22PM
There are quite a few nice enhancement shaman drops in Drak'Theron Keep or whatever its called...I got a nice helm and there is a nice mace that drops there as well...its slower than the badge weap from Shatt and has about the same if not better stats...Although Im having a hard time deciding which to use since I have mongoose on both of my fist weapons...decisions decisions....
Angus Nov 20th 2008 3:12PM
Always look forward to Thursdays.
I have hung up my Shaman, but it is nice to see the info being put out and actually tested and played with.
I plan on leveling the poor guy eventually. When I do, I'll be looking through the archives here for tips. I can trust this info. I'll keep reading Totem Talk each week, though. Someone has to fix misninformation. ;)
And Azjul-Nerob was insane. I tanked it with my tankadin and my wife and I were going nuts. Didn't bother reading the strats except for the last boss. (WHY THE F IS HE NOT A RAID BOSS?!?!)
Great instance, lots of xp, short, quick, intense and not a PITA. Like the anti-thesis of Shadow labs...
Ceora Nov 20th 2008 3:18PM
Your experiment should have failed when you realized 2h enhancement was something that died at lvl 40.
