Around Azeroth: Portal puzzle
This picture's submitter, Darkwhisp of <The Dons> on Anvilmar, writes that he took this shot because "I wanted to make a portal that you could "see" the other side of the portal (which would be really cool if portals actually did that)." I'm not a hundred percent sure what's actually going on here -- I'm not experienced enough at magedom to say if this is an actual portal or some sort of Photoshop creation -- but it's quite a pretty screenshot. Too bad he's probably porting his raid members to The Exodar, hmm? Mages, any idea what's happening here?
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, "mounted mounts", or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran.Filed under: Screenshots, Around Azeroth, Galleries

It's Ritual of Refreshment. He just zoomed the camera in.

I'm no mage but it looks to me as though they are summoning a food table in Eye of the Storm starter bubble. Just my opinion.

"See the other side of the portal"
Yeah, it'd be cool, but...

They could change the current art to some stock recording of the area the portal goes to, with a couple NPCs walking around or something. It would provide the illusion of being able to see through it without actually having to receive the data from zones away.

Yeah, the the Ritual of Refreshment that summons a food table.
Just think though, what exactly would be on the other side of that portal. Candy Land? Rolling hills full of magical briskets? Unicorns?
Teeka Nov 21st 2008 10:25AM
You mean biscuits? ;D I prefer to think that portal leads to Candy Mountain, Charlie!
Kaylad Nov 21st 2008 10:53AM
No, no. Galloping herds of wild brisket.

Possibility: portals appear to have sort of a "screenshot" of the location that they lead to. So, find the location where this "screenshot" would have been taken from, and create the portal there.
For example, stand outside of Stormwind and create a Stormwind portal so the views line up and match. If the images in the portals are not actual pictures of the cities and are artist renderings instead (I don't have a mage to play with to verify this right now) then it would not really work. But if they are indeed actual in-game renderings of the real cities, this trick is very possible.

And since the portals are partly transparent anyways, you "see what is happening in the destination"
Robert H Nov 21st 2008 10:24AM
And yeah, it probably is just a mage table or something - just saying who knows, maybe you could somehow do this by lining up the images.
Vicky Nov 21st 2008 10:22AM
nothing fancy or new here, just a mage table

Cleverly shot.
It'd be cool if Blizz put an art guy on the job of making new Mage/city portal animations. They did a great job with the Death Knight portals.
But not 'til Ulduar is done, thanks. :-)

EOTS refreshment table. :D

I would love some new portal animations.
The death knight door is definitely a better idea than the stupid sprite crap we mages deal with now.
in my head, i've always pictured portals starting as just a line in the air and kind of opening up to make a square shaped door. now as for the "inside" there are a few things that could be done. obviously the cheapest, easiest solution would be to just have an image in it.
but there exists in any 3d engine a much better looking solution in making a small box "behind" the portal that can only be seen through it, the inside of the box could be mostly obscured by purple cloudy stuff, much like the DK spell, but maybe have a little of it drifting out of the portal's entrance.
the box wouldn't need to be big, just deep enough and obscured enough to imply the depth.
That would be a portal.
