BigRedKitty: Spirit Beast
Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the Hunter class, sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
There was the day we beat Lady Vashj for the first time, pre-nerf. In our jubilation, we totally high-fived a lamp to its destruction, and thus Mrs. BRK finally got rid of, "that hideous piece of junk".
And now, both those days are eclipsed with our acquiring of a Spirit Beast pet. It's been almost twelve hours and we're still shaking. We haz Laser Kitteh! /flopfaint
The Spirit Beast is an exotic Ferocity pet. Only those hunters with the Beast Mastery talent can tame him. His special attack is Spirit Strike. It does immediate damage and then a delayed explosion of damage.
Where does the Spirit Beast spawn? There are many "rumors" of known locations, but the places we can confirm he spawns -- screenshots FTW -- are shown on the map below. In the movie we say "two", but of course someone emailed us a pic of a third location -- the northern one -- after we finished the movie. We found our Spirit Beast at 21.7, 70.1, which is the most western spawn point.
Mania, the goddess of Petopia, has a link to a map of spawn locations, but we haven't seen screenshots of the other two points on their map. Those may be good points, we just can't /BRK-Stamp them.

The proper name of our Spirit Beast is Loque'nahak. He is the mate of the chained god Har'koa in Zul'Drak. (In the movie we call Spirit Beast a "her", as we assumed Har'koa being a "god" was a male. /fail.) He is a rare elite, and unfortunately any class who kills her gets the Northern Exposure achievement.
Dear lesser classes, please don't kill him, we hunters are begging you. Killing Loq makes us cry.
There are other rare pets in the game, but we are not aware of any that have such a long spawn timer, can spawn in multiple locations, and can only be used by those hunters choosing to go at least fifty-one points deep into the Beast Mastery tree. Taming a Spirit Beast is a tremendous challenge, one we're thrilled to have been lucky enough to have completed.
You are invited to download the YouTube version (45MB) of this movie here, and the full-sized version (70MB) here. Crank your speakers; these downloads are in stereo for the best sound reproduction.
As always, a great big Thank You to the WoW Insider editors for allowing us to publish this movie both here and on our little blog at the same time!

Isn't this Spirit Beast a male? It says that when you do the quests for Har'Koa that she is a Female. So considering that this Spirit Beast is the mate of Har'Koa you would assume that Loque'nahak would be a male. Unless there isn't a male/female mating requirement for Spirit Beasts. So then I guess it would work out if they were both female.

The rarest "currently available" hunter pet in the game. I would argue that the spirit wolves are more more rare.
tehvoid Nov 22nd 2008 2:59PM
Spirit wolves are available no more. Unless I misunderstood one of tha post 2.4 patch ^^

GG BRK! There is hope, that someday one of my hunters will get one.
Danca Nov 22nd 2008 2:00PM
Hey BRK, you remind me of Jimmy.
"Hey, look. Hank's got a new boyfriend. Jimmy's not threatened by Hank's sexuality. Jimmy's happy for Hank."
hehe..

The real question is, when you found him, did you just abandon your current pet and not risk a trip back to the stables? Meanie!
Kibb Nov 23rd 2008 6:16PM
he might have been looking for it so already put his pet in the stable.

I have a special pet I use when I am in Sholazar. My main levelling/soloing pet is a gorilla, Magilla. White rare spawn, of course. So my Sholozar pet, one of the black ones from there, is AntiMagilla.
Had NotMagilla, but released him to tame the spirit beast that got ganked from me. x.x

it's too bad he sucks in terms of basically everything compared to a normal cat or a devilsaur.
Unless they really really bump the stats on the spirit beast soon to make it worthwhile, there's no way I'm wasting the time to get one.

Nice pet! Out of curiosity, what mods are being used here for the chat log and bottom bar? It looks like Titan on the bottom, but I can't tell...
Ongurok Nov 23rd 2008 1:09AM
Wow! Gratz man! How long had you been trying to get her?
Genkitty Nov 22nd 2008 2:36PM
A friend of mine has been working on taming this pet since she was high enough level to do so. She and another friend /finally/ lucked out and had a chance to start taming him... only to have a group show up and demand gold else they'd kill the beast. The cat ended up dead, and as they're same-faction there's not a thing my friend could do to stop it. She did send in a ticket about the griefing, but the GMs could do nothing about the direct loss of the opportunity and essentially wished her luck finding the next spawn.
Maybe the big names in hunterdom should petition for some sort of immunity for the animal during taming, or the ability to heal a beast in the midst of taming?

Yeah that would be really nice.

YES I AGREE WITH YOU!! because its irritating defiantly if you find yourself taming something you've looked for, for a while and a noob who just started playing see's you not hurting it and then goes up and kills it that's almost as irritating as finding the spirit beast and have someone demand gold to not kill it.... (almost i think the gold one is even more frustating)

Thats horrible... You take your time to find him, then some a-hole's come along and do that.... I swear parents need to get there 9 year olds off the computer. I'm sorry to hear that. I looked for hours and hours and found him, i can't imagine if someone came along and did that to me... Just make sure she doesn't give up. She'll find him.
