It's not that I wasn't satisified, but...
So it's been a while since I mentioned it, but I'm still pretty gung ho on helping to enforce WoW gameplay policies, especially RP server specific policies, and I will not hesitate to report anyone I see violating them by means of name or conduct. With the recent changes to the report system, I generally just stick their names and a few notes into the Report an Issue and move on, knowing that eventually, a GM will get the report and hopefully decided to be an enforcer that day. But even though I've elected not to speak with a GM, I still often get an email telling me the usual spiel: They looked into the issue, but are not able to tell me what happened due to privacy issues and whatnot.
Then comes the customer service satisfaction survey that asks me if the issue was resolved to my satisfaction.
I know it's probably automatically generated, but it both amuses me and confuses me. I mean, It's not to say I wasn't satisfied per se, but... how can I ever really say that my issue was actually taken care of? I'm not allowed to know what action was taken for "privacy reasons," so all I can do is watch for the dude I reported again. If he doesn't show up, maybe he got disciplined or got that name change. If he does show up, I'm left stewing because it looks like Blizzard didn't do anything, expect this is 3 weeks later and I no longer have access to that survey to tell them.
I suppose I'm still sort of unsure about all this "privacy" stuff. I'm not saying that you announce to everyone every action on a petition, but I'd really like to see some more GM Accountability on these matters. Something like a, "Thanks friend, I'd say the name Longjohnson is inappropriate and in need of a change, we'll get on that,." or a "No, sorry, we don't believe that Mootimer is in violation of our naming policy, rule X does not apply to him because Mootimer could technically be a proper name, and will not be taking action." I mean, you could even do it as a later email so people don't have a chance to sass you in tells or something.
In theory, I'm going to see the results of the inquest in game anyway when I see whether or not the name's changed. Why not let me know if there will be a change, and if not, tell me why the GM subjectively decided not to do it even though I am sure it is a clear violation of server policy? As an RP server player, it might give me a clearer picture of what GMs are doing (or not doing) to protect my playstyle and the rules of RP server. And of course, it'd help me actually be able to fill out those customer service surveys too, finally.

Agreed, they really need to enforce RP server rules more. It's not like I want them to perma-ban anyone who uses OOC chat or anything, but I really wish there were less Tauren running around with the word "Moo" in their name or any variation...It gets old, guys.

Amen to that. I never understood the mentality of people who give themselves names that scream "I'm a font of abject stupidity/full of fail/desperate for attention/I was raised by /b!" It's just especially egregious on RP servers. I play Horde side on Moon Guard when I want a break from my main server, and it annoys me. There's approximately 8 billion other servers you can get your durrr on at, plz to stay away from my RP.
Furthermore the mouth-breathing troglodytes that always come out on posts like this (like Mr. "I celebrate 420 a little too often") never fail to crack me up. I pay to play this game, and if someone's being a douche and breaking rules, you bet I'm reporting them. /trade notwithstanding, this is not junior high.

I think you are a LOSER who has nothing better to do. Did Blizzard ask you to help police? My your own god damn business. If you don't like it leave and find something else to do LOSER.

Actually, it did. Read the other article he linked. Fool.
Mark Nov 22nd 2008 12:21PM
Actually, Blizzard DID ask him to help police. Their harassment policy (and yes, RP violations are harassment) is reactive, not proactive. That means that GMs do not police chat logs, looking for violations, but instead rely on players to report behavior that violates the policy.
Adesworth Nov 22nd 2008 12:21PM
Yes they did, it's the RP server policy.
Graham Nov 22nd 2008 12:22PM
That is not the right attitude. Rules are rules. If someone wants to join World of Warcraft to rollplay, and they read the terms of conduct and go "Oh, this is great! It looks like Blizzard really has strict rules about enforcing my play style," but then they join to find out that they are not enforced, that needs to change. Whether they change the rules or change the way they enforce them, something needs to be done differently if people are going to take the rules seriously.
Technically speaking, those who do NOT follow the rules and do their duty by reporting those who obviously break them are losers.
Roflpanda Nov 22nd 2008 12:28PM
Oh and copy pasting
I saw these names breaking the name rules today:
into a gm ticket and then recalling the names you saw today takes about... 20 seconds.
I'm sorry if it's it's own dedicated activity for you though, some people might find that hard if they have an IQ of 40. GB2ur420buds k. LOSER.

@rolfpanda
I just read this article and the other one and I don't see anywhere where blizzard GMs asked him to be their little personal helper and police the game for them. And I know you're probably going to use the "it's everyone's responsibility to police the game" line, but this is a little ridiculous. This is a classic example of someone taking the game way too damn seriously. Does it really bother you that much that someone names their Tauren missmoo in your precious RP server? And on top of that do you honestly believe that it's right to be contacted the moment the person gets disciplinary action for such a stupid offense? Maybe you'd enjoy the game a lot more if you let others enjoy the game as well. Get over it.
Kia Nov 22nd 2008 1:15PM
Um...see that "GM Ticket" option? That's for, y'know, -helping to police the server. Just a thought.
Krianna Nov 22nd 2008 1:17PM
....Actually, yes, they did; their naming enforcement is based entirely off of player reports.
Hoggersbud Nov 22nd 2008 1:23PM
Actually, yes, Blizzard has asked players to report naming violations.
offday Nov 22nd 2008 1:25PM
Helping to police the server is one thing. Thinking you are the police and have the right to know the outcome of every exaggerated report you make is another.

Wow boy, settle down. You clearly have no idea of the problems on RP servers, and to be honest, your ignorant attitude is what is wrong with them. I report a lot of people, I am very open about that. So open even, that I whisper them before I do, telling them nicely that I am reporting and the reason for which I am reporting. Many people don't even know what RP means, so I explain it to them, after which they will sometimes apologise for their error, and I don't report. If they abuse me, I do, and to then hear from other people that they have received a warning on their account, fills me with glee, because their reply was the standard; LOLRPNUB.
You make us all sound like unforgiving bastards who do nothing but report. What you forget is that a lot of RPers put time into educating people, but people do not want to be educated.
It baffles me that apparently people that raid can get into hysteria because OMG you downed him first but you did it with another guild so it doesn't count towards progress DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMAAAAAAAAAAAA, and that is all just fine. But when we expect to have RP ON OUR RP SERVERS genius, then we have no life and take the game too serious.
If I create an RP event, spent a lot of time on the background story, I can not report because I am being a prick, but when you guys do your little silly raid thing, or PvP thing, god forbid that one thing go wrong, because we will be reading all about it in the guild drama section.
We all have different priorities in the game, I let the PvE people and the PvP people to their thing, while the other way around, people actually go out of their way to mess up RP events and spam in /s. You have no idea what it is like on an RP server, or you are one of the people on it that know damn well that they have no place there, but still say put so they can annoy RPers. I applaud you really, for sticking your head into the ground this easily so that all the points you bring up fit neatly into what you think defines an RPer, and never consider what an RPer might actually be.
Ignorance is bliss right?
