For the same reason companies pay millions to have their logotype on the F1 cars and on football arenas.

Well put it this way. You're commenting on them right now. You are aware of who they are and that they are sponsored.Everyone hears about them every day, pretty much. So where do people watch WoW? You've just commented on the answer :P

Well, you could put it this way. suppose a big company (say, AMD) sponsered a player and he hits 80 first, he can then go on and talk about how he used an AMD CPU when he hit 80, thus AMD getting some cred for the first 80, theoretically of course.
