Spiritual Guidance: Finishing off 75 - 80

Every Sunday (usually), Spiritual Guidance will offer practical insight for priests of the holy profession. Your host is Matt Low, the grand poobah of World of Matticus and a founder of PlusHeal, a new healing community for all restorative classes. This week Matticus is going to look at the final 5 levels from 75 to 80!
When I finished off Grizzly Hills, I was a few bars into 75. To be fair, I did run a few normal instances to knock out the quests that were within them. In this week's post, I'll give you a quick glance of the last areas and what you can start working on once you reach 80 (such as instances and gearing for raids).
Zones of interestZul'Drak – Priests will have a field day in this zone. On one side, you're going up against Scourge forces trying to take over the Troll capital. On the other side, there's renegade Trolls running loose. Your Shackle Undead is going to come in great use here if find yourself getting overrun and overwhelmed.
Sholazar Basin – It seems as though no matter what you do, you just can't get rid of Nessingwary. Get ready for more exotic animals to kill. Note that flightmaster does not become available until after you do a few of the early quests. A plane can't fly until you get the parts for it to become operational again.
At level 77, you'll get access to Cold Weather Flying. In order to continue leveling, you're going to need it for certain areas in Storm Peaks and Icecrown. You won't have to complete an extensive chain in order to learn it anymore. There's a Cold Weather Flying trainer in Krasus' Landing in Dalaran who will gladly teach you this ability for a mere 1000g (depending on your reputation).
Storm Peaks – If you're not into Inscription, be sure to do this zone! The Sons of Hodir are the only faction in Northrend to offer shoulder enchants! If there's a quest chain to do in the entire game, I believe it's the one in this zone. I really loved the storyline and the Norse references and it's a big treat whether you're into the lore side of things or not.
Icecrown – Welcome to Icecrown. The lair of the Lich King is home to monstrosities that players could only dream of. He certainly does have quite the army at his disposal. The Argent Crusade have set up a camp towards the south east part of the zone and that's where most players will be starting from.
Skills
At 75, we get access to a new Shadow spell called Mind Sear. Check out Alex's post for more information on this new baseline ability.
At level 80, we also get Divine Hymn. Haven't tried it out yet extensively. It looks like a lot of fun to use in PvP.
Professions
Start working on your professions now that you're 80. You may have to resort to farming them on your own (dual spec can't come soon enough). The auction house has some ridiculous prices up there right now.
Now what?
Congratulations on reaching level 80! For the PvE players, the next step is to run a few instances and start gearing yourself up for Naxxramas and Obsidian Sanctum! Here's a few items of interest and where to get them from:
These gloves would be something for early Priests to look at. All you need to do is run Caverns of Time: Stratholme and complete the quest Chromie gives you (A Royal Escort). If you're lucky, a Soul Preserver might drop which will help ease any mana woes you may have.
Tailors can create this epic level robe (which are extremely expensive). Run Utgarde Pinnacle and accept the quest (Junk in my Trunk) to get a Bauble-Woven Gown instead if you can't afford it.
Here's another (relatively) cheap blue you can pick up. See if you can sweet talk a tailor to craft this for you and parting with one of their Moonshrouds.
Instances?
To fresh 80s, I strongly suggest staying away from the Occulus and from Halls of Lightning for a while until you start accumulating better items. Both of those instances are no joke and aren't the most forgiving. Replace any final green pieces you have from quest rewards or crafted items and you should be in decent shape. I found heroic Gundrak to be challenging as well (that snake boss and his wraps are intensely annoying). The last boss in Old Kingdom (Ahn'kahet) is going to put many healers to the test.
Try your hand at heroic Nexus or Utgarde Keep first and gauge your ability in there.
Quick tip for Ahn'kahet
On the last boss, just before he triggers his Insanity spell, have your group stack on each other. When they become hostile, blow a Psychic Scream and run in the opposite direction. Keep your Shield and Renew up on yourself. The idea here is to not DPS the mobs on your own. It's going to punish your mana too severely. Stay alive as much as you can and kite them around the entire room. Buy the rest of your party enough time for them to kill their ads and get to yours. Conserve your mana and keep fearing when the ads get close to you.
You're going to get frustrated. You're not as geared as you'd like to be and both normal difficulty and heroic difficulty instances are going to continue to be trouble for you. My advice is to stick with it. I spent 3 hours wiping on Heroic Halls of Lightning after dinging level 80 just hours earlier. It can be done. Bring pots, use consumables, and pay attention to everything. It's harder because you're not familiar with boss abilities. Once you get the hang of that, it's one less issue to worry about. So stay with it!

Ok, so I started the expansion by turning in my 25 dailies from Outland - got me 4 bars of experience. I went to Howling Fjord, did all 105+ quests, went to Borean Tundra, did all 150+ quests, and am now 110/130 quests in Dragonblight. I've done 6 instance runs. And a few days in between getting some rested xp, and I'm 5 bars from 77 at the moment.
So, by the time I hit Grizzly Hills, I'll be 77 with cold weather flying. That seems about right. Only 3 upgrades in my ZA gear so far - all blues from instances - neck, shield, gloves (ele shammy). I should be seeing a lot more in the next zone or two.
Having a blast! I cannot believe the level of detail and sheer fun this is. Can't wait to see the rest of it. Wai2go Blizz!

I took this route as well. Blow through the low level content, throw some instance runs in there for good measure, and get a few of the requirements for the Loremaster achievement out of the way while doing so.
I really think shooting for the Loremaster title is one of the best ways to enjoy all the content Wrath has to offer, raiding and PvP aside.

Oh I agree. I hit 77 on my priest last night before logging. I have done all the instances up to UP now and have only quested in HF, BT, and Dragonblight. I was 4% away from 77 when I finished Dragonblight so I just barely touched the Grizzly Hills. Didn't grind instances either, just one maybe two runs of each to try them and hope for gear (which never drops for me anyway).
I figure I will hit 80 after doing the Grizzly Hills, Sholazar Basin, and part of ZulDrak leaving me plenty of quests to do at level 80 in the Storm Peaks and Icecrown. Will help build up the cash I spent on the constant respecs between holy (for instances) and disc (for questing)

Before Wrath, I suppose I knew intellectually that people didn't quest like I did, clearing every single quest in a zone before moving on to the next one. So I really shouldn't be surprised when the achievement tracking points it out in explicit detail.
Isn't this the right way to play? Who wants to hit 80 so fast and then have nothing to look forward to but repeating the same instances over and over until the next patch? Don't you want to see every bit of this game you paid all this money for?

JayEssTee says: Don't you want to see every bit of this game you paid all this money for?
We will have plenty of time to see every nook and cranny of Northrend with all of our alts. My priority now is to level my Main as fast as possible so I can get back into raiding. With 10 level 60-70's alts Northrend will be just as dizzyingly familiar as Azeroth and Outlands, not to mention the additional DK's I have made that are getting rested in Hellfire.
It is going to take me 2 years just to get everybody leveled up and geared. So I guess I will get my moneys worth. How about you?
Setesh Nov 24th 2008 9:48AM
I completely agree with the way you play, i like to completely clear a zone to get the most out of it before moving on to the next. i waited so long for this to come out, i want to make sure i enjoy it all.

"Seeing every bit of the content you paid for" is a gross generalization that everyone wants to see the landscape or the storylines etc. Not everyone does and I personally hate leveling as I am basically accepting every quest I can and watching my Carbonite to tell me where to go so I can hit 80 and go raid. That's all I do and only read the quests when I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do something in order to trigger an event to complete the quest. Even the famous Wrath Gate quest chain I have no clue what the story is about and I just watched the final FMV cut scene wondering why it's there and why it's cutting into my XP/hour - I have no regrets about it and neither do I think I missed anything spectacular by whizzing through it.. To be honest I'm not sure how anyone likes to level; grinding the same lowbie mobs 500 times to trigger an event named mob only for someone else to come gank it and tag it before you can rendering your hours of effort useless? Having to kill X amount of boars when someone previously killed all of them leaving you to go AFK for half an hour until they respawn again? Not sure I understand the fun in that because that is a large part of the pain of leveling up.

JayEssTee,
I think my play style is a lot like yours. There's a definite benefit to being methodical, especially in a game as huge as this one. I hate to randomly quest and burn time just for the hell of it.
Having said that, I like to focus on just the right quests all while gearing well and making sure I'm running up the right talents. A great guide I found is on http://wowgrinder.com/priest-leveling-guide/
There's a feeling to being unstoppable, especially when Priest leveling, that's just great: even if I intend to re-spec at max level.
Cheers and happy Priest questing.

Divine Hymn is a damn fine spell, unfortunately there's no new PvP gear in game yet so if I cast it, I almost always die.
I thought Ret Paladins were supposed to become 'balanced' at the 80 metagame?
bakatsuji Nov 24th 2008 1:34PM
4/8 tier 6 and still looking for a few good upgrades and have been 80 since late in the night on the 18th.
Heroics are fun and very challenging to heal imo, having some mana issues but shadowfiend and the earring from good ole' lurker that gives +300 spirit usually save the day.
Personally I blew through the starting areas, only have about half of the quests done in each zone according to the achievements, I have plenty of alts I will take my time through and enjoying the quests. Going so fast was good because there was no problems whatsoever with "kill stealing" and fighting over items and kills since everyone was still toying around with the other zones. It was great to see the content without a huge mass of players running around. Also wanted to get back to raiding as soon as I can, waiting on the tanks in the guild now to catch up so im farming heroics :).
